Drones now cost a few hundred dollars. The missiles armies fire to stop them can cost a few hundred thousand. Allen Control Systems looked at that arithmetic and reached an unfashionable conclusion: the machine gun, roughly 140 years old, deserved a second act.
Allen Control Systems (ACS) is a defense technology company that builds Bullfrog, an AI-powered autonomous robotic weapon station. In plain terms, it is a turret that mounts a standard machine gun - an M240, a .50 caliber M2 - and hands the hard parts of aiming to software.
Cameras scan the sky in 360 degrees. A neural network trained to recognize small aircraft flags a hostile drone. Custom motor controllers and fire-control algorithms slew the barrel onto the target and, when cleared, engage it with ordinary ammunition. The company's stated aim is blunt: lower the cost-per-kill of a drone to a few dollars.
Bullfrog is designed to counter Group 1-3 unmanned aircraft - the small quadcopters and fixed-wing drones that have reshaped modern conflict. It is meant to sit on trucks, boats and fixed positions, and to plug into command-and-control systems militaries already run rather than replace them.
The pitch line the founders repeat - "ACS changes the battlefield economics" - is a mission statement and a business plan folded into one sentence.
Cheap drones deployed in swarms can exhaust a defender's magazine of costly interceptors. Whoever makes counter-drone fire abundant and affordable holds the advantage. ACS frames the whole problem as a supply-chain race - which is why its Series B is going toward a factory, not a research lab.

Bullfrog finds drones with cameras, not radar. There is no signal to detect, jam or trace back to the shooter. Passive sensing is not a feature here - it is the survival strategy.
ACS trains its AI on photorealistic 3D environments, generating synthetic footage of drone types before they appear in the field. When a new threat emerges, you generate the data rather than wait for it.
Rather than invent exotic hardware, ACS makes the cheapest, most abundant weapon smart. Sometimes the boring answer scales better than the exotic one.
Open architecture and legacy-weapon compatibility mean militaries keep what they own. That is how you sell to buyers who hate lock-in.

The founding story is an unlikely one. Two of the three founders were U.S. Navy nuclear reactor engineers; the trio first worked together in restaurant technology. When their startups were acquired in 2022 - one by DoorDash, one by Olo - they regrouped around a harder problem.
