On September 9, 2026, StoneX announced that City Index, its UK trading brand, would become StoneX Trading. A customer might reasonably have expected an accompanying inconvenience: a new platform to learn, perhaps, or a different support team. The announcement promised continuity instead. Accounts, platforms and support would stay the same. The name above the experience was changing. That modest distinction is a useful place to begin understanding StoneX Retail.
- FOREX.com and StoneX Trading connect individuals to financial markets.
- The 2020 GAIN acquisition supplied established retail brands and digital distribution.
- Country, account type and trading costs matter as much as the interface.
01 / A familiar screen, a larger machine
StoneX Retail is the consumer-facing trading business within StoneX Group. Its public profile includes foreign exchange, contracts for difference and exchange-traded markets. The parent serves commercial firms and institutions as well, but those customers should not be confused with people opening a retail trading account. The appeal here is direct access: an individual can study a market, place an order and manage a position through software.
The names require some care. FOREX.com remains a retail brand. City Index’s UK operation became StoneX Trading in September 2026. The group traces its heritage to 1924, when commodity brokerage was the business; the modern retail platform story arrived much later. A century-old family tree can be reassuring. It does not tell you when the app was born.

02 / The $237 million entrance
In July 2020, StoneX completed its purchase of GAIN Capital. The final merger consideration was approximately $236.6 million. The company’s annual report put total transaction value at $329 million and described a $350 million high-yield bond issue used to finance the purchase consideration. These numbers describe different parts of the deal. None is a venture funding round.
GAIN brought FOREX.com, City Index and a complementary futures business. At announcement, it served more than 130,000 retail and institutional investors. StoneX acquired a ready-made digital route to customers alongside trading technology and expertise. The commercial argument was specific: combine transaction flows, improve execution economics, remove duplicated infrastructure and broaden what existing customers could trade.
That is the strategic turn visible in the record. StoneX’s 2020 results described GAIN’s retail business as a fundamental change in business strategy. Buying the customer-facing layer gave the group another use for the financial network underneath. The business lesson is fairly practical: distribution can be worth acquiring when you already own capabilities that make it more useful.
“For our clients, the transition is deliberately straightforward.”

03 / What the trader actually gets
For a US FOREX.com customer, the menu includes 80 currency pairs, proprietary web and mobile platforms, TradingView access and MetaTrader options. UK StoneX Trading customers can access CFDs and spread betting across multiple asset classes. These are jurisdiction-specific menus. A global brand does not make every product available in every country.
The practical problem is fragmentation. A trader needs prices, charts, news, an economic calendar and a way to turn an observation into an order. FOREX.com gathers those functions into a workspace. Its platform comparison lists Reuters news, research, alerts and charting tools. Supporting external platforms also lets some clients keep a familiar working environment rather than learn another interface.

Performance Analytics adds an interesting wrinkle: the object under examination is the trader. Tools cover planning, discipline and past behavior. FOREX.com identifies Chasing Returns as the technology provider and offers the analytics at no extra cost to live clients. There are limits: the published FAQ says its historical analysis excludes charges such as financing and commissions. A behavioral dashboard and a complete account statement answer different questions.
04 / The arithmetic beneath “zero”
Brokerage software needs an economic engine. FOREX.com’s US Spread-Only account charges through the spread, the gap between buying and selling prices. Its RAW Pricing account combines tighter spreads with a commission. The published US rate is $7 per $100,000 of US-dollar notional traded, charged on each leg.
Commission only. Add the applicable spread and any overnight financing.
That makes a $100,000 USD/JPY position $14 in roundtrip commission before other applicable costs. A quoted spread of zero is therefore only one part of the price. Different regional websites publish different schedules, so the relevant account’s terms matter. The company also operates an introducing-broker program that rewards partners as referred customers trade.
FOREX.com describes itself as a market maker and sources liquidity from banks and electronic networks. This is where the parent’s institutional capabilities matter to the retail proposition. Against alternatives such as IG, CMC Markets or Saxo, StoneX’s argument rests on the combination of established brands, platform choice and a broader financial network. That does not establish a universal winner on cost or suitability.
05 / When the market goes quiet
The weak point in the growth story is activity. StoneX’s 2025 annual report described unusually low volatility weighing on FX and CFD trading. It recorded 136,000 actively traded FX/CFD accounts, down 4%, and 158,000 newly approved clients, down 17%. Fewer active accounts and fewer new approvals put pressure on a business built around participation.
Comparable quarters ended June 30. Reporting segment figures; 2025 comparatives revised.
The following year supplied another check on enthusiasm. Fiscal third-quarter 2026 net operating revenue in Self-Directed/Retail fell 17% to $64.4 million. That reporting segment is broader than the FX brands alone. Better distribution and tools cannot guarantee rising revenue every quarter.
06 / Keep the routine. Inspect the plumbing.
The September rebrand makes StoneX’s ambition more visible: connect the individual’s trading screen more closely to the group behind it. The useful thing to copy is the care over continuity. Preserve the customer’s working routine while adding capabilities. For traders, inspect the legal entity, available instruments and full bill. Leverage still magnifies losses; reliable access cannot supply a profitable strategy. The machine can carry out a decision. The decision remains yours.
