A career spent narrowing the gap between killing cancer and harming the patient
Most cancer drugs share the same flaw. They cannot tell the difference between a tumor cell and a healthy one, so they attack both. Steven Everett has spent more than two decades trying to fix that single problem, and MaveriX Oncology is where he is putting the answer to the test.
Everett is the founder, president and CEO of MaveriX Oncology, a small biotechnology company based at 435 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto, California. The pitch is deceptively simple: build cancer drugs that remain inert as they travel through the body and only switch on once they reach the tumor. In the language of the field, these are called conditionally activated therapeutics. The goal is a wider therapeutic index, meaning more of the drug's punch lands on the cancer and less of it lands everywhere else.
He did not arrive at that idea overnight. Everett trained as a chemist and biologist at the University of Ulster, then earned a doctorate in radiation chemistry and biology, with research spanning Ulster and the Hahn-Meitner-Institut in Berlin. Radiation chemistry is an unusual foundation for a small-molecule oncology founder, but it gave him an early, molecular-level fluency in how energy, oxygen and chemical bonds behave inside living tissue - the exact terrain where tumors differ from healthy cells.
From 1992 to 2005 he worked as a principal investigator and senior scientist at the University of Oxford's Gray Institute, funded by Cancer Research UK. He then moved to the University of Dundee, where he led the Drug Discovery and Translational Research Group. Along the way he held faculty and adjunct roles connected to UCSF. All told, he secured 14 years of Cancer Research UK funding at both project and program grant levels, authored or co-authored more than 100 scientific papers, and is named on more than 50 issued patents and applications. In 2003 he received the Steiner International Award for Cancer Research.
That academic record matters because it is the raw material for everything that followed. The science behind Everett's companies was developed inside publicly and charity-funded labs, then licensed out and carried across the Atlantic to be turned into medicines. He is a professional member of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Royal Society of Biology, and he later added an MBA from the University of London - the deliberate move of a scientist who decided that papers alone do not reach patients.
MaveriX is not his first company. Between 2010 and 2013 he founded and ran Cyterix Pharmaceuticals as president and CEO, where he invented the company's OncoCYP-targeted prodrug discovery approach. Before that he served as an entrepreneur-in-residence and scientific advisor at Threshold Pharmaceuticals. By the time he founded MaveriX in 2014, tumor-selective chemistry was less a project than a through-line running across his whole career.
The technical heart of MaveriX is its platform of conditionally activated small-molecule drug conjugates, shorthand CA-SMDCs, alongside a next-generation take on antibody-drug conjugates the company calls targeted-targeted ADCs. Both approaches lean on the same insight: the tumor microenvironment is a distinct chemical neighborhood - hostile, altered, and rich in certain enzyme activity, including hydroxylases. MaveriX designs drugs that use those local conditions as the trigger to release their payload, so the drug becomes active in the place that matters and stays quiet elsewhere.
There is a second ambition layered on top. Many solid tumors are what oncologists call cold, meaning the immune system largely ignores them. MaveriX's therapeutics are designed not only to kill cancer cells directly but to reshape the immunosuppressive tumor immune microenvironment, or TIME, and coax the immune system into joining the attack. In 2022 the approach was profiled in Nature, which described the company's strategy of co-targeting cancer and the immune microenvironment with conditionally activated small molecules.
What is striking about MaveriX is how lean it is. Public records put the core team at roughly three people, with reported total funding around $7.5 million and a Series A round dating to 2019. It is a small operation carrying a broad, ambitious pipeline - the kind of setup that only works when the founder can personally hold both the chemistry and the business in his head. Everett, with his double doctorate on one side and an MBA on the other, is built for exactly that.
The company name fits the posture. MaveriX signals something contrarian, a willingness to design cancer drugs against the grain of how the industry usually builds them. Rather than making a payload more potent and accepting the toxicity that comes with it, Everett's whole bet is on control - on drugs that know where they are and act accordingly. It is a bet he has been placing, in one form or another, for most of his working life.
Whether MaveriX ultimately delivers a marketed medicine is still an open question, as it is for any early-stage biotech. But the throughline of Everett's career is unusually clear. From Oxford radiation labs to a Palo Alto startup, he has kept returning to the same stubborn idea: that the difference between a good cancer drug and a great one is not just how hard it hits, but how precisely it chooses its target.
