The Geneticist Trying to Make CAR-T Reach the 90% of Cancers It Never Could
Sabah Oney left Cyprus at 18 with a fixation on genetics. Two decades, three degrees, and one IPO later, he is running a company that wants to tag every solid tumor for the immune system to hunt.
The math behind Sabah Oney's career is stubborn and hard to ignore. CAR-T cell therapy, one of the great medical breakthroughs of the last decade, has produced startling cures in blood cancers. But blood cancers are the minority. Solid tumors - the kind that grow in the lung, the pancreas, the breast, the brain - make up roughly 90% of cancer diagnoses, and against those, engineered T-cells have mostly stalled. That gap between what CAR-T can do and what cancer actually is has become the problem Oney gets up for.
He runs Dispatch Bio, a company that spent three quiet years building before it said much of anything in public. When it did, in mid-2025, it arrived with $216 million behind it, a founding roster that includes CAR-T pioneer Carl June, and a claim large enough to sound reckless: a universal treatment across solid tumors. Oney is the one who has to make that claim real.
OriginsAn 18-year-old with one obsession
Oney is from Cyprus. He came to the United States at 18, alone, chasing a specific interest rather than a general dream - genetics. He studied it at the University of Kansas, then went deeper, earning a PhD in genetics and genomics at Duke. On paper that is a straight line toward a career at a lab bench. What happened next is the part that explains him.
Rather than stay purely in the science, he went to Stanford's business school for an MBA, concentrating on finance and strategy. The reasoning was practical. Discoveries do not become medicines on their own; someone has to fund them, structure them, and carry them through the years of trials and partnerships that stand between an idea and a patient. Oney decided he wanted to be fluent in both languages - the biology and the balance sheet.
That sentence gets quoted a lot, and it would be easy to file it away as the kind of thing every founder says. What makes it credible in his case is that he kept choosing companies where the biology was the hard part, and he kept moving closer to the patient with each one.
The ResumeA pattern of joining early
His first major stop out of Stanford was Ariosa Diagnostics, where he helped drive the global expansion of non-invasive prenatal genetic testing - reading fetal DNA from a mother's blood sample instead of a needle. Ariosa was acquired by Roche in 2015. From there he became chief business officer at Alector, a biotech using the immune system to go after neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. He sat on the executive committee and helped steer the company through its IPO and a series of large partnerships.
Then the pattern gets more interesting. In 2021 he joined ARCH Venture Partners as a venture partner, moving to the investor's side of the table. In 2022 he co-founded Vilya, a computational biotech launched by the Nobel laureate David Baker, and served as its interim CEO. Diagnostics, then neuroscience, then computational drug design, then oncology - the through-line is not a single disease. It is a habit of showing up early, before a company has a name anyone recognizes.
What FLARE is supposed to do
Dispatch's platform is called FLARE, and the name is the idea. Solid tumors are hard for the immune system for two connected reasons: cancer cells look enough like healthy cells that T-cells struggle to tell them apart, and the tumor builds a hostile, suppressive microenvironment around itself that shuts immune cells down. FLARE tries to solve both at once. It uses a viral vector to deliver a novel, universal antigen that tags tumor cells - a beacon that flags them for destruction - while simultaneously eroding the tumor's protective microenvironment.
The elegant part, in Oney's framing, is the target itself. Instead of hunting for a marker that a particular tumor happens to carry, Dispatch installs the marker. The antigen is only expressed by the patient's tumor cells, which is meant to spare healthy tissue and, in principle, make the approach tumor-agnostic rather than tailored to one cancer type.
Who is standing behind the bet
A claim this big only travels if serious people co-sign it. Dispatch's Series A was led by ARCH Venture Partners and the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, with Bristol Myers Squibb, the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, and Alexandria Venture Investments in the syndicate. The scientific founders come from four separate labs - Andy Minn, Carl June, Chris Garcia, and Kole Roybal, spanning Penn, Stanford, UCSF, and Memorial Sloan Kettering. June, in particular, is one of the people who helped make CAR-T real in the first place.

The MountainHe funded the fight before he led it
In 2022, before he had anything to do with a cancer company, Oney joined a group of biotech people on the Climb to Fight Cancer, trekking toward Everest Base Camp on the Timmerman Traverse. He personally raised close to $97,000 for cancer research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. He has called the trip a life-altering experience, and the detail lands because it is not a press-release gesture bolted onto a company mission. It came years earlier.
The bookend arrived in January 2026, when Oney joined the Fred Hutch Board of Directors - the same institution he had hiked a mountain to support. Whatever else you make of the science, the sequence tells you the cancer fight was personal for him before it was professional.
A career in six moves
2026 is the year it gets real
All of this - the degrees, the diagnostics, the IPO, the venture seat, the mountain - now points at a single date. Dispatch's first program is expected to enter clinical trials in 2026. That is the moment a platform stops being a story about universal antigens and starts being a set of results in actual patients. Universal treatment across solid tumors is one of the largest ambitions in biotech, and most attempts at problems this size do not work on the first try.
Oney seems to understand the size of what he has taken on, which is maybe why the through-line of his career reads less like ambition and more like preparation. He learned the biology, then learned the business, then spent years joining companies at the stage where the science could still fail. Dispatch is the biggest version of that bet. Whether the immune system can be taught to clear a solid tumor on command is still an open question. He has arranged his entire working life to try to answer it.
