Company / Performance marketing

Reprise Digital found the gaps between the clicks

A search agency became a global performance network by joining up the work around the ad. Its next act came in 2023, when Reprise became part of KINESSO.

The peculiar thing about a digital advertisement is how little of the sale it controls. It can find the right person, make the right promise, win the click - and deliver that person to a baffling website. The media report looks respectable. The customer leaves. Reprise Digital built its proposition around the space between those two events.

The story in three moves

  • Search expertise expanded into social, creative work and customer experience.
  • Commerce brought retail operations into the performance conversation.
  • Reprise joined KINESSO in 2023; the old name now describes a chapter.

Its phrase was “Customer Flow”: movement along the path to purchase. In ordinary language, the idea was to give the people buying attention a working relationship with the people responsible for what happened next. That sounds obvious. The organizational history of advertising suggests it required rather a lot of meetings.

01 / The search box gets bigger

Peter Hershberg and Joshua Stylman, childhood friends, founded Reprise Media in February 2003. By the time Interpublic acquired it in 2007, the self-funded business had 55 employees. Search was becoming too consequential for a large advertising group to leave as an accessory. Reprise supplied a specialist capability that could travel across the parent company’s agencies.

Microsoft’s subsequent search assignment made the logic concrete. Reprise would work with McCann WorldGroup across the software company’s products and brands, connecting search campaigns to other marketing. Search could reveal the question someone asked after encountering an advertisement elsewhere. Treating that question as a separate departmental matter meant losing part of the story.

In 2009, Reprise moved into Mediabrands. Then, in 2018, mobile agency Ansible and social agency Society were folded into it. Their contributions were practical: mobile technology and user experience from one; content and creative skills from the other. The relaunched network counted 2,400 employees across 71 offices in 42 countries.

“They simply had to talk to too many brands within IPG Mediabrands.”Tim Ringel, then Reprise CEO, speaking to AdExchanger in 2018

That diagnosis is more revealing than a merger announcement. The client was effectively coordinating the specialists. Bringing them together offered a chance to move that burden inside the agency. The difficult part was management: Ringel also described the challenge of combining leadership teams. Putting everyone under one name did not automatically settle how they worked.

02 / A shopping cart has a supply chain

The next expansion followed the purchase further. Reprise Commerce launched in October 2020 with more than 250 specialists. Its remit included marketplaces and direct-to-consumer selling, but also supply chains and warehousing. An agency talking about warehouses is an amusingly literal interpretation of following the customer home.

It was also commercially sensible. A product page, the advertising that sends shoppers there, and the operation fulfilling the order belong to the same transaction. Reprise’s distinction was the attempt to connect these responsibilities at network scale. The services remained familiar - strategy, SEO, paid search, social and content - but the intended unit of improvement was the whole journey.

For a buyer comparing agencies, this places Reprise in the territory occupied by performance networks such as iProspect and Performics, with smaller specialists and internal teams as alternatives. The useful buying question is specific: does the assignment need coordination across those disciplines? A narrow search brief may need a narrow team. Complexity needs a reason.

03 / Read the spending number

Consider NEOSTRATA, the skincare brand moving further into direct-to-consumer sales. In a Google-published account, Reprise helped pilot Performance Max across Google and YouTube. Comparing three months against the preceding three months of standard Shopping campaigns, revenue rose 91%. Spending rose 65%. Reported efficiency improved 16%.

NEOSTRATA / reported three-month comparison

Revenue
+91%
Spend
+65%

Percentage changes, not absolute dollars. Successive periods; no randomized control is described.

The spending figure matters. It makes this a story about scaling sales while improving efficiency, rather than producing a near doubling from an unchanged budget. The transferable lesson is to publish the input beside the output. Otherwise, a case study can accidentally become a magic trick.

A second example carries a different complication. Skai’s Foundation Consumer Healthcare case reported ROI up 190.9% and costs down 29.3%. The comparison straddled Walmart’s June 2022 change to a second-price auction. Reprise used Skai’s Experiments to examine performance. The platform changed the conditions; the agency’s contribution was recognizing and testing the opportunity. Those percentages do not travel intact to another retailer.

04 / The work behind the dashboard

Inside the agency, reporting had its own friction. With Devoteam, Reprise built RAPID on Google Cloud, using standardized data models and repeatable deployment. The partner reported client analytics provisioning fell from roughly two weeks to 45-90 minutes. Regional ambassadors and training supported adoption. The lesson for another operator is mundane and useful: agree on definitions, automate repeatable setup, and teach people how to use the result.

Five people in a Reprise office, four seated holding letters spelling Reprise and one standing behind the sofa.
Teamwork, spelled out. Reprise’s 2023 Monash partnership put students inside agency work for twelve weeks. The cardboard has excellent brand recall.

People were part of the operating model, too. Reprise made Ad Age’s Best Places to Work 2022 list. In Australia, its Monash University partnership gave four business students twelve weeks of training and workplace experience across search, social, strategy, content and commerce. The breadth made the agency’s integration argument tangible at the beginning of a career.

05 / The name leaves. The problem stays.

On September 21, 2023, Mediabrands combined Reprise, Matterkind and Kinesso under KINESSO. Performance marketing, addressable media, data and technology moved into a larger operation. Omnicom’s November 2025 acquisition of Interpublic subsequently changed the parent-company context. Reprise’s LinkedIn description now begins: “We are now KINESSO.”

The useful inheritance is a management question anyone can copy: where does the customer get stuck between teams? Start there. Pick a shared outcome. Test a change while tracking its cost. Connected work still depends on usable data, agreed responsibilities and a product people want. A smoother journey cannot manufacture demand for an unwanted destination.
