STUDYTEAM IS BECOMING STUDYTEAM BY CARE ACCESS · A CLOSER FIT FOR RECRUITMENT AND RESEARCH DELIVERY

01 / COMPANY CLINICAL RESEARCH

Reify Health and the patient lost in the spreadsheet

A promising medicine still needs people willing and able to test it. Reify Health built its business around the unglamorous work of getting those people from an expression of interest to a research visit.

Consider the patient who has already said yes. Not yes to an experimental treatment, exactly, but yes to learning about a study. That expression of interest still has to become a phone call, an eligibility check, an appointment, and perhaps enrollment. There are several opportunities for a perfectly willing person to disappear into somebody’s inbox. Reify Health built a company around that interval.

THE QUICK READ
  • StudyTeam connects research-site recruitment work with sponsor reporting.
  • The core site application is free; optional additions can carry fees.
  • Care Access adds research delivery and community access to the software story.

A trial sponsor sees an enrollment number. A coordinator sees the people behind it: the candidate awaiting a callback, the person who fails one criterion, the visit that needs rescheduling. The two views describe the same study, but arrive at different times. Reify’s proposition is that they should meet earlier, while somebody can still do something useful.

The sticky note gets a promotion

Ralph Passarella and Michael Lin met at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and founded Reify in 2012. Their expertise combined an understanding of medicine with an interest in how research actually gets done. According to a 2021 interview, the company’s first three years involved talking to people about why clinical trials were difficult to run. Enrollment emerged as a persistent obstruction.

In a 2020 interview, Passarella described the tools available to frontline staff: “Spreadsheets, paper and sticky notes were the internal tracking system.” The observation is almost comically ordinary. Drug development, an undertaking associated with laboratories and complex science, also depended on the office stationery cupboard.

The company’s response took two forms. In 2015, it launched the initiatives that became StudyTeam and Care Access. One put research-site workflows online and connected them to sponsors. The other brought physicians and practices into research, including practices in underserved communities. Better coordination and greater access became complementary businesses under one parent.

Give the coordinator a reason to log in

StudyTeam for Sites organizes recruitment, pre-screening, referrals, and visits. Teams can build patient databases, track inclusion and exclusion criteria, and use previous recruitment work when another study opens. The sponsor application offers a broader view across sites, countries, and recruitment channels. A coordinator’s update can become sponsor information without a separate round of calls and manual logs.

There is an economic detail worth pausing over: the core site application costs the site nothing. Optional add-ons may carry fees. Sponsors and contract research organizations obtain enterprise solutions through the company’s sales process. That structure gives the people doing the daily work a reason to adopt the system, even though the larger commercial relationship sits elsewhere.

The model belongs in enterprise healthcare software, with services alongside it. Its distinguishing emphasis is the connection between the site’s working record and the sponsor’s enrollment picture. A recruitment advertisement brings interest; a broad trial-management system has other responsibilities. StudyTeam concentrates on making that interest traceable through the work of recruitment and enrollment.

The Referral Partner Interface makes the argument tangible. An API delivers recruitment partners’ candidates into StudyTeam, where sites already work. Progress can travel back to vendors and sponsors. Instead of measuring only how many names a campaign produced, a team can investigate what happened to those names. Antidote is one publicly documented recruitment partner.

Amgen asks for the larger view

Amgen first used StudyTeam on a smaller set of trials. A published case study describes an analysis projecting an average 25-day reduction in enrollment time and a 25% reduction in non-enrollment. Those were analytical estimates that informed broader adoption. Amgen moved toward using StudyTeam across its Phase 1 through Phase 4 portfolio.

The same case study reports 20% more patients enrolled per site per month across Amgen’s global portfolio. Treat that as a reported customer result, with its particular context, rather than a promise attached to every login. The distinction matters: adoption evidence is useful; an automatic forecast for an unrelated study would be wishful arithmetic.

Customers named in public materials also include AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, Merck, and Sanofi. StudyTeam currently reports use at more than 10,000 research sites and availability in more than 100 countries. Its sponsor materials recommend starting before enrollment, ideally during site selection. The logic is practical: a shared picture is most valuable before the warning signs become missed deadlines.

The money arrived. So did the reset.

Reify raised $30 million in Series B financing in 2020, followed by $220 million in 2021 and another $220 million in April 2022. The last round put its reported valuation at $4.8 billion. Those numbers describe financing and investor expectations at the time, rather than revenue or present-day market value.

By December 2022, OneStudyTeam had laid off 160 employees, approximately a quarter of its workforce, according to MobiHealthNews. A spokesperson attributed the restructuring to a period of rapid growth and hiring. The funding story and the staffing story belong together. A useful product can still leave its maker with an organization that needs resizing.

One family, a closer fit

In August 2026, Care Access announced that StudyTeam would become StudyTeam by Care Access, with the OneStudyTeam brand gradually retiring. The stated purpose was closer alignment with community screenings, clinical services, and site support. The platform and its team would continue through the transition. It is a practical extension of the original two-part approach.

For other businesses, the copyable idea is to make reporting grow out of useful frontline work. Its limits are equally practical. Staff must use the tool, records must stay current, and a site still needs capacity to assess and see patients. StudyTeam’s own FAQ leaves clinical accuracy and approval responsibilities with sites and sponsors. A clearer view can reveal the queue. People still have to move it.
