The Fund That Bets on Lab Coats, Not Hoodies

A female-founded merchant bank in Singapore is quietly wiring together capital, regulators and non-dilutive grants to push quantum, climate and brain-health science out of the lab - and it is measuring the results in billions mobilized, not just term sheets signed.

Most venture capital in 2026 chases software that ships on a Tuesday. R3i Ventures is doing something less fashionable and considerably harder: writing checks into science that might take a decade to leave the bench. The firm - the venture arm of R3i, a self-described frontier-technology merchant bank - backs early-stage deeptech in climate, water, health, AI infrastructure, space and defense. Its portfolio reads like a physics syllabus: room-temperature quantum computing, brain-health diagnostics, digital therapeutics, critical minerals.

Founded in 2021 and legally headquartered in Singapore as R3i Ventures Pte. Ltd., the firm is female-owned and runs across three continents - Singapore, Luxembourg and the United States. It is small on headcount, roughly 14 people, but the numbers it reports are not small. Across its broader platform, R3i cites about $184 million invested into 39 portfolio companies, roughly $156 million returned across 16 exits, and approximately $2.4 billion of capital mobilized alongside $1.1 billion in non-dilutive grant funding. Those last two figures are the tell: R3i counts money it helped attract, not just money it wrote.

01What R3i actually does

The pitch is simple to state and hard to execute: move breakthrough research from the lab to what R3i calls "sovereign-scale deployment." In practice that means backing a scientist-founder early and then supplying the things capital alone does not - regulatory navigation, non-dilutive grants, procurement access and market intelligence. For a company trying to sell watertech to a utility or medtech to a health system, those are not niceties. They are the difference between a promising paper and a deployed product.

The sector list is deliberately broad for a seed fund: applied AI, space, security, renewable energy, medtech, watertech, agriculture, advanced manufacturing, robotics and semiconductors. What ties them together is not an industry but a difficulty setting. These are capital-intensive, regulation-heavy, long-horizon bets - the categories most generalist funds avoid precisely because they are slow.

02The five-layer machine

R3i does not describe itself as a fund so much as an integrated merchant bank stacked in five layers. Each layer feeds the others: deals sourced at the top get structured, cleared, studied and, when the science checks out, funded.

The two commercial engines most founders meet are the R3i Future Fund, a roughly $50 million deeptech seed vehicle, and the R3i Impact Foundation, a venture-philanthropy arm that channels catalytic capital toward climate and health innovation. Running a for-profit fund next to a foundation is a deliberate design. It lets R3i take on science that is important before it is investable, and it signals a thesis that impact and returns can travel together rather than trade off.

03Where the money moves

The most striking line in R3i's own accounting is the gap between what it invested and what it mobilized. Direct capital is one bar on the chart; the grants and co-investment it helped unlock are another, far taller one.

04Who it backs, and who it sells to

R3i has two sets of customers at once. On one side sit scientist-founders in deeptech, the people running the labs and spinouts. On the other sit the limited partners and institutional investors who want exposure to frontier science but lack the in-house expertise to underwrite a quantum-computing seed round. R3i sits in the middle, translating between them.

The portfolio it has assembled makes the thesis concrete. Quantum Brilliance works on room-temperature quantum computing. ViewMind builds brain-health diagnostics. Prosoma develops digital therapeutics. Studio and portfolio work has also touched Vena, an EU critical-minerals platform, and founders at Lios Group, MGA Thermal, StratifiCare and Meracle Health. None of these are consumer names, and that is the point.

05The science in the room

Deeptech due diligence is only as good as the people reading the papers. R3i's answer is a Chief Science Officer who has been reading them for decades. Prof. Marianne Winslett - General Partner of the R3i Future Fund and Chief Science Officer of the Impact Foundation - is a professor emerita of computer science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an ACM Fellow, recognized for contributions to information management and security. She earlier directed the Advanced Digital Sciences Center in Singapore, a research outpost funded by A*STAR.

That background matters more than a typical advisory title. When a fund's edge is separating science that works from science that merely sounds good, having 30-plus years of academic pattern-recognition in the room is a form of underwriting most seed funds cannot buy.

R3i counts the money it helped attract, not just the money it wrote. That single accounting choice explains the whole model.

06How it differs, and where it fits

Plenty of firms invest in climate and deeptech - SGInnovate, Wavemaker and Xora in Singapore; Lowercarbon, DCVC and The Engine globally. Where R3i diverges is the bundle. Most funds hand a founder a check and a board seat. R3i's proposition is that in regulated, capital-heavy sectors the scarce input is not money but access - to grants, regulators and procurement - and it has built dedicated layers to supply exactly that. The 2024 launch of R3i Frontier, a venture-partner program to train emerging climate-deeptech managers, extends the same idea to the investor side.

It also occupies an unusual seat in the market as a female-owned platform, listed among the partners of Beyond The Billion, a coalition mobilizing capital into women-led funds and companies. In a corner of venture better known for hoodies and hardware bros, R3i's positioning is its own kind of differentiation.
