The Agency That Outlived the VHS Tape

A Virginia agency founded when television spots and print ruled the brief is still here - now buying clicks, building sites and flying drones. Its best lesson is not nostalgia. It is knowing which parts of the old craft to keep.

The machine was nine minutes long and lived on a VHS tape. It showed Dominion Terminal Associates, a coal shipping and storage operation, but time had turned the film into an unreliable witness. The terminal had modern systems. The video had the visual manners of another century. A tool meant to prove capability was now quietly diminishing it.

Primm Advertising took the assignment. Before anybody pointed a camera, the team researched the facility, walked the site and built a script and shot list around what the machinery actually did. Then came weeks of coordination: ships, staff and operations all had to be in the right place. The terminal could not politely stop being a terminal for the convenience of a film crew.

The shoot took less than six hours. Primm captured people, equipment and drone footage while work continued around it, then added motion-tracked type, shadows, steam and rippling water in post-production. The project arrived before its deadline and below the client's expected budget. The actual dollar figure is private. The useful economics are public: preparation bought back production time.

What failed first? Not the terminal. Its old film stopped resembling the company it was supposed to explain. Primm changed the representation, not the operation.

The strange advantage of being old

Primm was founded in 1974. That is a dangerous fact for an advertising company because longevity can sound like a euphemism for furniture nobody has moved. But the agency's current menu is almost comically broad: broadcast and print media, paid search, SEO, local search, social media, websites, branding, graphic design, streaming placements, video and motion graphics.

This is not breadth for its own sake. The recurring problem in Primm's work is fragmentation. A business buys search ads from one shop, a website from another and a video from a third. Each piece can be competent while the whole behaves like a committee that never met. Primm sells the meeting. Its product is the attempt to make the media plan, message, page and measurement agree.

The line is useful because it describes both the service and the constraint. Public company records put the team in the 11-to-50 range; the supplied company data counts 15 employees. This is not a global network disguised by a friendly account lead. It is a compact Virginia Beach agency whose pitch depends on access: same-day responses, no ticket queue, direct conversation and the willingness to work as either a long-term partner or a project resource.

A media planner learns to map intent

Tiffany Curran's career is a miniature version of the company's transition. Her public professional history places her in Primm's media department in 1991, then in the president's role from 2007 onward. The job once centered on schedules, placements and audiences across radio, television and print. Those instincts did not become obsolete when the browser arrived. They acquired more knobs.

The planning logic
Immediate demand
Compounding findability
Durable memory
A conceptual map, not reported performance: PPC answers demand now, SEO compounds discovery over time, and brand and creative work make the message easier to remember.

Primm's own PPC guidance makes a distinction many agencies blur. Paid search is useful for immediate demand, seasonal gaps and quick feedback. SEO is slower and can produce a better long-run return. Used together, one supplies speed while the other compounds. The point is not to crown a channel. It is to give each channel a job.

The same logic appears in the portfolio. For Beach Ford, the work included a television spot around the Mustang Mach-E launch. For the Decker Law Firm in 2020, Primm quickly advertised the availability of video consultations. For Atomic Plumbing and Carroll Trucking, the agency rebuilt websites. For Eggleston, a Hampton Roads nonprofit serving adults with disabilities, a media planner worked on radio campaigns and fundraising visibility. Different outputs, same question: what must this audience understand next?

01 / FIND

Search and paid media

SEO, local search, PPC, display, remarketing and reporting turn discoverability into a managed system.

02 / EXPLAIN

Video and creative

Scripts, shoots, drones, editing, motion graphics, brand identity and campaign design make complex offers legible.

03 / CONVERT

Websites

Responsive development, UX, integrations, analytics and calls to action give attention somewhere useful to land.

04 / REMAIN

Social and brand

Content, community management and consistent visual systems build recognition between campaigns.

The price of staying on trial

Primm prices work through custom proposals. Engagements can be narrow projects or continuing relationships, and the agency says many ongoing contracts are month to month. That arrangement sounds like a small contractual detail. In practice, it rearranges the incentive: every month resembles a renewal decision.

The model fits companies that have a real operating story but lack the internal specialists to translate it across several channels. It also fits a marketing department that needs production or media depth without hiring a complete second department. It makes less sense for a founder seeking a one-click commodity, a giant global rollout requiring offices in many markets, or a company unwilling to share access, numbers and operational context. An integrated agency cannot integrate information it never receives.

There is also a regional texture to the work. Law firms, auto dealers, shipyards, industrial operators, healthcare providers, home-service companies and nonprofits appear throughout the public portfolio. These are businesses where the product may be familiar locally but difficult to explain cleanly. The competition includes other Hampton Roads full-service shops, specialist SEO and production firms, and the increasingly plausible option of assembling an in-house team.

What changed the agency's mind

There was no single conversion on the road to digital. The evidence suggests a stack of small ones. Primm says it has run PPC since 2002. Social platforms became media channels. Websites became sales infrastructure. Search escaped the search engine and began happening on TikTok, Instagram, Reddit and AI tools. In 2025, the agency described its future as a combination of human creativity and AI-driven precision, while promoting longtime digital leader Michael Rooks to vice president.

The phrasing matters. AI is presented as an enhancement to research, automation and targeting, not a substitute for the person who tours a coal terminal before writing the shot list. The agency has changed its machinery while keeping an older belief: useful creative begins with attention paid to the client's actual business.

The copyable move

Spend more time getting access before spending money on output. Tour the facility. Name the job of each channel. Put one person close enough to the whole campaign to catch contradictions. Then make the shoot shorter.

That is the amusing lesson of the VHS tape. The old thing was not bad because it was analog. It was bad because it had stopped telling the truth. Primm's durability comes from treating formats as temporary and the obligation to represent a business accurately as permanent. A television spot, a Google ad and a motion-tracked drone film are merely different containers for the same promise.
