The Company That Makes SharePoint Bearable

Plumsail automates document generation, web forms, and customer support for Microsoft 365 and SharePoint, helping teams save time and cut manual work.

There is a whole category of software that nobody puts on a T-shirt. It does not trend. It does not get a keynote. It lives inside other people's tools, doing the work that would otherwise fall to an intern with a Word template and a long afternoon. Plumsail has been building that kind of software for fifteen years, and roughly 8,000 organizations across 170 countries now pay to keep it running.

Founded in 2011, Plumsail makes tools that automate documents, build web forms, run support desks, and generally extend Microsoft 365 and SharePoint - the software that millions of office workers open every morning whether they want to or not. The company's pitch is refreshingly narrow: take the repetitive tasks buried inside Microsoft's ecosystem and make them disappear.

01 / WHAT IT DOESPaperwork, minus the paper

Picture the most tedious office chore you can think of. Someone fills out a form. That form data has to become a contract, an invoice, a certificate, or a signed PDF. Then it has to be filed, emailed, and sometimes signed by a person in another country. Traditionally, a human does most of that by hand.

Plumsail's core products chain that whole sequence together. Plumsail Documents takes a template - a DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, HTML, or PDF - and fills it with data automatically, collects eSignatures, and delivers the result. Plumsail Forms builds the public web forms and SharePoint forms that feed data in. And connectors for Power Automate and Zapier wire the two ends to the thousands of apps a business already uses.

Around that spine sit four more products: Plumsail HelpDesk, a ticketing system that runs inside SharePoint Online; Actions for Power Automate, a toolkit of advanced SharePoint actions; and Org Chart and Charts for SharePoint, which turn dry list data into something a manager can actually read.

02 / WHO USES ITFortune 500s and the finance team you never see

The customer list runs from Fortune 500 names to universities and non-profits. The people actually clicking the buttons tend to be SharePoint administrators, IT teams, and business users who have been handed a process and told to make it faster. They are not looking to be dazzled. They want the thing to work, and to keep working after the next Microsoft update.

"After first using Plumsail Forms four years ago, it's now the first thing I request when I start a new contract."Nick Jones, Senior Developer, St Pierre Groupe Ltd

That is the tell of a durable tool - not that people love it, but that they carry it from one job to the next. Plumsail's growth has come largely from that kind of quiet loyalty rather than from a marketing push.

03 / THE PROBLEMMicrosoft gives you a house with no furniture

SharePoint and Microsoft 365 are enormous, capable, and famously bare in places. Native forms are limited. Document generation is barely there. The built-in charts are plain. Microsoft has never tried to fill every gap, because filling gaps is not how a platform giant spends its time. That leaves a standing market for tools that do.

Plumsail's answer is to solve the specific, unglamorous problems: the form that needs a repeating table, the contract that needs a signature block, the support queue that should not require a whole separate app. The value is measured in afternoons not spent copy-pasting.

04 / WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENTIt refused to die three times

Building on someone else's platform is a deal with the weather. When Microsoft changes the climate, add-on vendors either adapt or vanish. Plumsail's most distinctive trait is that it has adapted, repeatedly, without dropping its customers.

Its form designer began in 2012 as a Microsoft Silverlight prototype. When Microsoft discontinued Silverlight, Plumsail rebuilt the tool as a Windows desktop application. When the modern SharePoint experience and the SPFx framework made classic customizations obsolete, the company rewrote its engine again - this time in JavaScript, on Vue.js and Bootstrap. In 2023 it folded two separate designers into a single desktop app of about 13 megabytes.

"We saw a rising sun over a boundaryless field of the modern JavaScript era."Dmitry Kozlov, Co-Founder

That is an unusual way to describe a platform migration most companies would have dreaded. It also hints at the discipline behind the pivots. Co-founder Dmitry Kozlov puts the philosophy plainly: "deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do." A small team survives three platform earthquakes by being ruthless about focus.

05 / THE BUSINESSBoring revenue is the best revenue

Plumsail is a straightforward B2B SaaS business. It sells subscriptions to its cloud products and licenses for its SharePoint add-ons, generally priced per month or per year, with free trials to get started. Money comes in through renewals - the least dramatic and most reliable form of revenue there is.

There is no publicly disclosed venture round behind any of this. The company is registered in Wilmington, Delaware, and operates as a distributed team. It grew the unfashionable way: build something useful, charge for it, keep it working, repeat. In an era of blitzscaling, a bootstrapped tool company reaching 170 countries is its own kind of statement.

06 / THE EXPERTISEDeep in one ecosystem, on purpose

Plumsail's expertise is not general-purpose. It is a specialist's knowledge of one very large world - the guts of SharePoint authentication, the quirks of Power Automate, the exact shape of a DOCX template. Its public GitHub organization ships open connectors for Power Automate, Zapier, and n8n, plus Azure Functions for pulling data out of SharePoint and Dynamics 365. That is the work of a team that lives inside Microsoft's stack rather than visiting it.

07 / THE MARKETWhere it sits

In the wider document-automation and forms market, Plumsail sits alongside names like Formstack, Conga, and Templafy, and it competes with Microsoft's own Power Apps and Power Automate for some of the same jobs. In the narrower SharePoint add-on niche, it shares ground with vendors such as Nintex and KWizCom.

Its position is the specialist's corner: not the biggest player, but a deeply integrated one that customers reach for precisely because it does the Microsoft-specific things well. The moat is not flashy. It is the simple fact of being genuinely useful on a platform an enormous number of people are stuck using - and of having proven, three times over, that it will still be there after the next update.
