The passport a worker carries from one site to the next
On a mine site or an offshore platform, a single expired ticket can stop work. For decades, the proof that a person was qualified to be there lived in filing cabinets, PDFs and someone's inbox - re-checked, re-keyed and re-chased every time that worker turned up for a new job. MyPass Global was built to end that loop. Its platform gives each worker a digital Skills Passport: a verified, portable record of their qualifications, licences, medicals, vaccinations and background checks that they own and carry with them. Employers and site owners are granted permission to view it, and in return get real-time visibility of exactly who is compliant across their contractor workforce.
The idea started small. In 2013, Matt Smith - a mechanical engineer who had spent years in operations in the resources sector - built a pilot tool with his wife Nerita to match transient workers to industrial shutdown projects. What he kept running into was waste: the same qualifications proven over and over, spreadsheets that went stale the moment they were saved, and no single source of truth connecting workers, contractors, site owners and training bodies.
By 2016 the tool had become a digital Work Passport, piloting on a Woodside offshore contract, and the company had rebranded to MyPass Global. The bet underneath it was simple and slightly contrarian: make the product free for workers, and let employers pay for the visibility. When the worker owns the passport and takes it from job to job, the data only gets richer - and the network builds itself.
A decade on, that bet reads as a category. More than 1,500 organisations and over 160,000 verified workers now sit on the platform, which is embedded inside BHP's Global Contractor System and used by names like Woodside, Shell, Chevron and Alcoa. In February 2025, the Australian venture firm OneVentures led a A$7.5M Series A to push MyPass into North and South America.
It is not a flashy consumer app. It is plumbing for industries that cannot afford a compliance miss - and that is precisely the point.

Compliance is only as strong as your worst-verified credential
In mining, oil and gas, energy and construction, the workforce is transient by design. People move between contractors, sites and countries, and every move restarts the paperwork. The risk is not abstract: MyPass estimates that 1 in 650 workers on regulated sites carries a fraudulent document. Miss it, and an unqualified person walks through the gate.
"There wasn't a solution out there that could get people off spreadsheets and simplify the way transient workers were tracked across highly regulated sectors. That was enough to entice me to leave the comfort of my corporate role."
The old answer was more admin: bigger spreadsheets, more chasing, more onboarding delay. MyPass's answer was to delete the work. A University of Western Australia study found the approach could cut back-office compliance costs by up to 75% - not by pushing people harder, but by removing the re-keying and the expired-certificate surprises altogether.
What changes when the passport does the checking
Operational metrics reported by MyPass
Two sides of one record
MyPass is built around a worker side and an employer side that share the same verified data. The worker maintains the passport; the employer reads it in real time.
Skills Passport
A free digital credential wallet holding verified qualifications, licences, certifications, medicals and checks - with QR-code field verification, biometric mobile login, duplicate-record prevention and automated expiry alerts at 90, 60 and 30 days.
Launched 2016 · free for workersIndustry Portal
A dashboard for site owners and contractors: real-time compliance tracking, automated matching of workers against project requirements, contractor benchmarking and audit-ready reporting across the whole workforce.
Employer subscriptionCompetency & Compliance
Modules spanning competency assurance, contractor management, workforce compliance, sourcing and recruiting, health and safety, and learning and development - the operational spine of a regulated workforce.
Platform v3.0, 2019Integrations Layer
Links to site access control, workforce planning, safety management and ERP systems so verified credential data flows into the tools operators already run - rather than living in yet another silo.
Expanded 2025Free for the worker, paid by the employer
How it makes money
B2B SaaS subscription, plus data-as-a-service. Individual workers use the Skills Passport at no cost, which keeps the credential data flowing and up to date. Businesses and vendors pay tiered subscriptions based on the number of active workers in their resource pools, billed in advance.
- Workers: free forever
- Employers: per-active-worker subscription
- Data compounds as workers move between sites
Where it fits
MyPass sits in the workforce-compliance and contractor-management category, positioning itself as "sector agnostic" and increasingly as the system of record across industries.
- Mining & resources
- Oil, gas & energy
- Construction & utilities
- Aged care & volunteering
Alternatives: Pegasus (Avetta), Damstra, Rapid Global, Cog, myComply.
The worker owns the record
Most compliance systems belong to the employer. When the worker leaves, the data stays behind and the next employer starts over. MyPass inverts that: the passport belongs to the worker and travels with them. That single design choice - worker ownership - is what lets one verification serve many employers, and it is the hardest thing for a traditional per-site system to copy.
"Ours is the only platform that can connect workers, site owners, suppliers, training institutions and industry bodies with a single source of truth."
Add to that a decade of hard-won trust in conservative, safety-first sectors, ISO 27001 certification, and direct verification feeds that catch fraudulent documents, and the moat is less about features than about being the record everyone already agrees to use.
