The company turning the office break room into a fresh, self-service cafe that never closes - and betting the vending machine's days are numbered.
Morsl installs automated, unattended micro markets - self-service cafes - inside Australian workplaces, giving staff fresh meals and better-for-you snacks around the clock.
Walk into a Morsl market and there is no counter, no queue and no one behind a till. There are open shelves and fridges stocked with salads, wraps, sushi, ready-to-eat meals, fresh fruit and drinks, a scan-and-pay kiosk, and a screen showing nutritional information. You take what you want, tap a card, and leave. It runs 24 hours a day, which matters most to the people traditional food service forgets: shift workers, warehouse teams and anyone eating at odd hours.
The company was founded in 2018 by Karla Borland, who spent 17 years in banking - including a director role at Credit Suisse across Sydney, Singapore and Zurich - before the everyday problem of finding decent food at work pushed her to build the alternative. Morsl calls itself Australia's first unattended micro-market operator.
The pitch to employers is simple: healthy food that is easy to reach makes for happier, more productive teams. The pitch to employees is even simpler - real food, on site, whenever you need it, instead of a glass box of chocolate bars.
Morsl now runs a curated range of 1,000+ products, including gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, paleo, nut-free, kosher and halal options, and has expanded from a single format into coffee, pantry management, catering and workplace engagement.
Competitors range from vending-machine operators and workplace canteens to breakroom suppliers and other emerging unattended-retail players.
Automated, unattended 24/7 cafes with 1,000+ fresh foods, meals, snacks and drinks via scan-and-pay.
Workplace coffee service integrated with the market offering.
Managed stocking and procurement of pantry and break room supplies.
On-site catering, health campaigns and engagement events for wellness programs.
Portable units for construction sites and temporary industrial locations.
Morsl installs and runs markets inside employer premises at little or no cost to the employer, earning revenue from product sales plus service, procurement and engagement offerings. Operating models flex from employer-subsidised setups to fully self-funded, consumer-pay markets.
When COVID-19 closed six of Morsl's seven sites, the survivor was an Officeworks dispatch warehouse. That single site revealed the industrial market - blue-collar and night-shift workers with almost no fresh-food access - and reshaped the company's strategy toward the sector that drove its later growth.
