The Company That Makes Flexo Predictable
Kodak invented the flat-top dot that made flexo printing predictable. In 2019 it sold the whole business - and the people who ran it built Miraclon around a single job: making the plate the most reliable part of the pressroom.
Pick up almost anything from a supermarket shelf - a shampoo bottle, a bag of pet food, a folding carton of tea - and the graphics on it were most likely printed by flexography. Flexo is the workhorse of packaging: fast, cheap, and for decades, faintly disappointing. It could not hold fine detail or smooth gradients the way gravure and offset could. Then, in 2008, Kodak shipped a platemaking system that changed the ceiling. The company that carries that technology forward today is called Miraclon, and its entire reason to exist can be summed up in one unglamorous sentence: make the printing plate the most reliable object in the pressroom.
A flexographic plate is a sheet of light-sensitive polymer. Artwork is imaged onto it, the plate is developed and mounted on a cylinder, and it transfers ink onto film, labels or board as the press runs. Get the plate right and everything downstream - registration, color, ink usage, waste - becomes easier. Get it wrong and you get press stops, remakes, and material in the bin. Miraclon's products all orbit that single point of leverage.
The inventionThe dot that started it
The breakthrough was almost comically small: the shape of a dot. Conventional digital flexo plates cured in the presence of oxygen, which rounded off the tops of the tiny dots that carry ink. Rounded dots transfer ink unevenly. Kodak's FLEXCEL NX System, launched at the drupa trade fair in 2008, used a proprietary high-resolution thermal film to eliminate oxygen from the exposure step. The result was a flat-top dot - a dot with a level, predictable surface that lays down ink consistently, run after run.

That consistency is what let flexo climb out of its niche. Printers using the technology began winning work that used to be reserved for gravure and offset, because they could hold detail and color across a long run without the plate drifting. The flat-top dot did not make flexo flashy. It made it dependable, which in a factory is worth more.
The wider point is about variability. A pressroom's costs are not driven by the average job but by the bad ones - the run that drifts out of register, the plate that has to be remade, the stop to wipe ink off a dirty plate. Each of those turns machine time into scrap. By tightening what happens at the plate, Miraclon is really selling a narrower distribution of outcomes: fewer surprises, more jobs that behave the way the proof said they would. For a plant manager measured on uptime and waste, predictable is not a soft benefit; it is the whole ballgame.
How Miraclon left Kodak's gravity
By 2019 the technology had a decade behind it, but it lived inside Eastman Kodak, a company with many other priorities. That April, Kodak completed the sale of its Flexographic Packaging Division to Montagu Private Equity for $340 million. The division got a new name - Miraclon - and a mandate to do only one thing. Chris Payne, who had led the division, became CEO. The KODAK FLEXCEL brand stayed, licensed to the new company, which is why Miraclon's products still carry a Kodak name and its social handle is still @KodakFlexcel.
Most corporate spin-outs celebrate their freedom by sprawling into new markets. Miraclon did the opposite. It narrowed. Freed from a parent's competing agendas, it poured its focus back into the same product family and the applications expertise around it. The bet was that a company doing one thing for a demanding industry could out-execute divisions doing it on the side.

The newest addition is the FLEXCEL Prime Plate, a next-generation plate-and-film combination launched in 2025 to extend plate life and reduce the interruptions that eat into a plant's output. It was already installed at more than 30 customer sites across 14 countries before it won the Flexographic Technical Association's Technical Innovation Award in 2026.
Razors, blades and a plate
The model underneath is familiar: hardware plus consumables. Converters and trade shops buy the imaging and exposure systems once, then keep buying the plates and thermal films to run them. Those recurring consumable sales are the engine; the software and process services deepen the relationship. Miraclon sells worldwide through a network of authorized channel partners and directly to large accounts, and it runs certification programs and regional support hubs to keep customers getting full value from the installed base.

The customers are not consumer brands themselves but the printers that serve them - the converters producing labels, flexible film, folding cartons and corrugated board. When a brand owner cares about a can that holds its color across millions of units, that pressure travels down the chain to the plate. Miraclon sits at that pressure point, which is a quietly defensible place to be.
What can a printer actually do with the technology? Practically, it lets a shop take on work it used to turn away or subcontract - fine text, subtle vignettes, expanded-gamut color that reduces the number of inks on press. It lets a converter reshore short-to-medium runs that once made sense only overseas, because the setup is faster and the results repeat. And it lets a trade shop standardize: image a plate in one city and get a matching result in another, which matters when a global brand runs the same label at plants on three continents. The value is less about a single hero print and more about doing ordinary work with fewer variables.
The green angleSustainability, hiding in the plate
Packaging sustainability is usually framed as a material question - what the film is made of. Miraclon's argument is that a lot of the impact lives in the process. A plate that runs cleaner needs fewer press stops. A plate that lasts longer means fewer remakes. FLEXCEL NX Ultra removes solvents and VOCs from platemaking entirely with water-wash processing. And the SHINE LED Lamp Kits retrofit existing exposure equipment rather than sending it to scrap - sustainability by upgrade instead of replacement. Those kits won FTA Technical Innovation and Sustainability Awards in 2024, the same year Miraclon joined the Consortium for Waste Circularity.

Where it sits in the market
Miraclon competes on two fronts at once. Inside flexo, it faces the other big plate and imaging suppliers - DuPont's Cyrel, Asahi Photoproducts' water-wash plates, XSYS's nyloflex, MacDermid, and prepress players like Esko and Fujifilm. Outside flexo, its real rival is the alternative process: every job that a printer keeps in gravure or offset because they do not trust flexo to hold quality. Miraclon's whole pitch is aimed at that second fight - closing the gap so a converter chooses flexo without a quality compromise.
It is a focused company doing focused work: a central office near Brussels, plate and film manufacturing in Oklahoma and Japan, roots in Rochester, New York, and roughly 290 people organized around customers who print packaging all day. There is no reinvention story here, no pivot. There is a technology that outlived the company that invented it, a team that stayed with it, and a decade-plus habit of making the least glamorous part of printing a little more predictable each year.
