Before "blockchain" was a buzzword and "AI" a investor thesis, Lucian Todea was already two companies deep in Romania, building the kind of software platform that 10 million people use without knowing his name. That is exactly how he likes it.
Lucian Todea didn't discover startups. He was born into the economic wreckage of post-communist Romania, studied finance in Bucharest, and then in 2001 - while still a student - launched a website about software downloads. The initial monthly server cost was $3. That site became Soft32.com, one of the world's most trafficked software distribution platforms, serving over 150,000 applications to more than 10 million monthly users.
He never finished his economics degree. He didn't need to. By 2002 he'd already learned more from Soft32 than any classroom could offer. The company he built around it, ITNT, would later rank 4th in Central Europe on Deloitte's Technology Fast 50, with a growth rate of 1433%. Not a rounding error. Not a fluke. A pattern.
"I was so focused on making my start-up work, onboard as many users as possible and start generating revenues and profits, that everything else was irrelevant."
- Lucian TodeaThat relentlessness shaped everything that followed. Todea is one of those builders who doesn't separate his life from his work - not because he has no life, but because building is the life. He was running twelve different ventures before he co-founded MultiversX (then called Elrond) in 2017 alongside Beniamin and Lucian Mincu. Mobile payments. Travel. Mobile advertising. A payments platform. Each one a deliberate bet on infrastructure that most people hadn't bothered to look at yet.
MultiversX was the biggest swing. A layer-1 blockchain designed from the ground up around adaptive state sharding - a technical approach that allowed the network to process transactions at internet scale, not blockchain scale. As COO from 2018 to 2023, Todea handled everything the CEO shouldn't have to: operations, partnerships, the grinding day-to-day execution that converts a whitepaper into a working network with real users and real adoption. He built the machine while Beniamin Mincu was the face of it.
By the time he transitioned out of MultiversX in 2023, Todea had already been quietly writing checks for years. Anthropic. Perplexity. Chainalysis. Circle. Suno. Kraken. Ripple. Uniswap. Dune Analytics. K2 Space. Sandbox VR. Messari. Ezra. Jasper. The list reads like a portfolio assembled by someone who saw the inflection points coming - crypto infrastructure, AI models, audio AI, space - and moved before the crowd.
"Technology was never about technology, but about improving and enriching people's lives."
- Lucian TodeaHe is now Partner at 2048 Ventures in New York - a thesis-driven early-stage fund focused on Vertical AI, Deep Tech, Health and Bio, writing checks from $500K to $3M and leading pre-seed and seed rounds. The fund closed an $82M Fund III in January 2026. He works alongside Managing Partner Alex Iskold and fellow partners Neha Khera, Rachel Lyubovitzky, and Monica Woo.
His investment philosophy hasn't changed from the days he was angel-checking Romanian SaaS companies. Team first, always. Can you trust them? Can they execute? Do you actually understand what they're building? Todea is skeptical of founders who can't explain their product in plain language, and of investors who back markets without understanding the teams in them.
"I've never been a fan of general advice," he has said. The line sounds like a throwaway, but it isn't. It's a worldview. Everything he does is specific, tactical, operator-grade. He learned to build companies by doing it wrong first. He has little patience for theory.
Which might explain the Ironman. In 2015, he picked up endurance training from a cold stop. No athletic background, no running history, just a decision to try something that seemed impossible. By 2016 he'd completed a Half-Ironman in Barcelona. In July 2017 - the same year he was co-founding a blockchain company - he crossed the finish line at Ironman Austria in 14 hours. That's 3.8km of swimming, 180km of cycling, and a full marathon. In sequence. In one day.
The same logic that built Soft32 for $3/month. Pick something hard. Show up. Finish.
Across AI, crypto infrastructure, audio, health, space, and fintech - Todea wrote checks before the categories had names.
Soft32 began as a Romanian software directory with a three-dollar-per-month server bill. No VC. No co-founder with connections. Just a student with a browser and a plan that worked.
As COO, Todea was the operational counterweight to vision. While the Mincu brothers led product and public narrative, he built the systems, partnerships, and execution infrastructure that turned Elrond's whitepaper into a functioning network.

"The first and most important [investment criterion] is the team. Are they trustworthy and are they able to execute and deliver based on their initial vision?"
"Technology was never about technology, but about improving and enriching people's lives."
"I had no clue what building a company involves...I learned by doing. And it paid off for me."
"Once exercise becomes part of routine...finding time is not a big deal. You just do it."
"Those who know how to code will hold power. The rest will follow instructions given by those who do."
"I've never been a fan of general advice."
Todea didn't arrive at VC after one successful exit. He built twelve companies across mobile payments, travel, advertising, and software - each one a different lesson in what execution actually requires.
His investment screen starts with trustworthiness. Not market size. Not traction. He backs people he believes will figure it out - because he had to figure it out too, with no manual and no money.
Starting in Romanian tech gave Todea an operator's instinct for resource constraints. Moving to New York put him in the room where the biggest rounds happen. He brings both to every deal.
His entire first company ran on a $3/month server - the same amount most people spend on a coffee.
200+ investments means Todea has written more checks than most full-time VCs who started earlier.
He backed Anthropic before Claude existed. He backed Suno before AI music was a real category.
He completed Ironman Austria (14 hours, 226km of combined swim/bike/run) the same year he co-founded a blockchain startup.
Personal interests: reading, gaming, wine, and travel - the classic builder's recovery stack.
ITNT ranked 4th in Central Europe on Deloitte's Fast 50 with 1433% growth. 4th in CEE is not a participation trophy.
Was in Romania's Who's Who in Business as one of the most important 1000 businessmen - six years running (2008-2013).
His portfolio spans Anthropic to K2 Space - from the frontier of AI reasoning to rockets that carry satellites.
