The Camera Company That Left Twelve Bodies on the Moon
A 185-year-old Swedish name, twelve camera bodies still sitting in the lunar dust, and a $7,399 flagship. How Hasselblad turned a tiny, expensive niche into a brand that outlives its owners.
Somewhere on the Sea of Tranquility, twelve cameras are collecting sunlight. They were carried up by NASA astronauts, used to shoot the most famous photographs in human history, and then abandoned to save weight for the ride home. Only the film came back. The camera bodies were Swedish, hand-built in Gothenburg, and they carried one word on the front: Hasselblad.
That single fact tells you most of what you need to know about the company. Hasselblad does not make many cameras - roughly 10,000 a year - and it does not make cheap ones. What it makes is the largest practical image sensor in photography, wrapped in a body a working photographer can actually hold. For a very specific kind of buyer, that trade is worth thousands of dollars. For everyone else, Hasselblad is the name on the Moon.
01 / The OriginOlder than the camera it is famous for
The company predates photography as a profession. F.W. Hasselblad & Co was founded in Gothenburg in 1841 as a trading house, and for decades it imported photographic materials - at one point serving as Kodak's distributor in Sweden. Cameras were a sideline to a business built on selling other people's film.
The camera company as we know it came later. In 1937, Victor Hasselblad opened a photography shop in Gothenburg and founded AB Victor Hasselblad. His break arrived in 1941, when the Swedish government asked him to reverse-engineer a captured aerial surveillance camera. The result, the HK7, was the first camera to carry his name. Sixteen years after that came the product that defined the brand for a generation.
The 500C, launched in 1957, was a 6x6 modular system - interchangeable lenses, film magazines and viewfinders, all clicking together like a precision toolkit. Photographers could change film mid-roll by swapping backs. It became the studio standard, and it is the reason a Hasselblad shot everything from The Beatles crossing Abbey Road to portraits of Jimi Hendrix and Audrey Hepburn.
02 / The MoonWhy NASA chose a Swedish camera
The space chapter began by accident. In 1962, astronaut Walter Schirra - a keen photographer - brought his own Hasselblad 500C aboard Mercury-Atlas 8. The images were good enough that NASA formalized the relationship. Hasselblad cameras flew across the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs.
On July 21, 1969, a silver Hasselblad Data Camera, fitted with a Zeiss Biogon 60mm lens and a glass Reseau plate etched with a grid of crosses, was mounted on Neil Armstrong's chest. It shot the lunar surface. Those small "+" marks scattered across the famous Apollo photographs are the Reseau grid - a measuring tool baked into the picture. When it was time to leave, the crew stripped out the film magazines and left the bodies behind. There are twelve of them still up there.
This is heritage most brands would kill for, and Hasselblad has never stopped using it. In 2019 it marked the 50th anniversary with a matte-black 907X Special Edition stamped "On the Moon Since 1969." The Moon is not just a story here. It is a permanent, unpaid endorsement.
03 / The ProductOne clear promise, priced accordingly
Modern Hasselblad runs on the X System, launched in 2016 with the X1D-50c - the world's first mirrorless medium-format camera. It took the sensor that used to live in studio equipment and put it in a body you could carry on a hike. The current lineup runs to 100 megapixels: the X2D 100C, the retro 907X & CFV 100C, and the 2025 flagship X2D II 100C.
The pitch is refreshingly narrow. A Hasselblad sensor is roughly 70% larger than a full-frame camera's, which means more detail, deeper color and a distinctive tonal quality that photographers describe and buyers pay for. There is no feature-count arms race. Hasselblad sells size, optics and restraint - the XCD lenses even hide a leaf shutter inside each barrel so flash can sync at any shutter speed.
What does all that resolution actually buy you? Room. A 100-megapixel file can be printed at gallery scale, cropped hard without falling apart, and pushed in post while holding shadow and highlight detail that smaller sensors clip away. For commercial and fashion shooters, that means one frame can serve a billboard, a magazine spread and a web crop. For landscape and fine-art work, it means a print that rewards standing close. The camera is slow and deliberate by design - and for the people who buy it, slow is a feature, not a bug.
It also helps to be honest about who a Hasselblad is not for. It is not a sports or wildlife camera, it is not cheap, and the medium-format lens lineup is smaller than what Canon or Sony offer. If you shoot fast-moving action, need a long telephoto, or want the most frames per dollar, a full-frame body will serve you better. The X System rewards a specific way of working - considered, high-resolution, print-first - and punishes everything else.
The flagship X2D II 100C, launched in August 2025, was the first Hasselblad with continuous and LiDAR-assisted autofocus and an end-to-end HDR workflow. It also did something unusual for a luxury product: it got cheaper. At $7,399, it undercut the model it replaced. That is a signal about where the market is heading, and about a parent company that knows how to build components at scale.
04 / The OwnerHow a drone company saved a camera icon
Hasselblad has changed hands almost a dozen times - Swedish investors, a Hong Kong group, German private equity. The most consequential owner arrived quietly. In 2015, Chinese drone giant DJI took a minority stake; in January 2017, it took control. The photography world braced for the brand to be hollowed out.
The opposite happened. DJI's manufacturing muscle showed up inside the cameras - the 1TB SSD tucked into the X2D is made by DJI - and Hasselblad's optical know-how showed up inside DJI's high-end drones. It is a clean piece of vertical integration: one company makes the sensors and lenses, the other makes them fly.
05 / The BusinessThe economics of making very few things
Hasselblad's model is the inverse of the camera mainstream. Where Sony and Canon fight for volume, Hasselblad sells low numbers at high prices - bodies from roughly $5,000 to $9,000 and up - through a global dealer network and a direct online store, plus lenses, digital backs and accessories. Its 2024 revenue was around SEK 1.89 billion, or roughly $175 million.
The customers are professionals in fashion, studio, landscape, portrait and fine-art work, plus serious enthusiasts and collectors. It is a deliberately small base, and that is the point: the niche is too expensive to serve and too demanding to please for most rivals to bother. The brand also rents out its expertise - a three-year, $150 million partnership with OnePlus (2021-2025) put Hasselblad's color science and logo on flagship phones before it wound down.
06 / The FieldWhere Hasselblad sits
In medium format itself, the rivals are few. Phase One sits above, selling ultra-high-end digital backs for the price of a car. Fujifilm's GFX line sits directly alongside, sharing the same 44x33mm sensor format and undercutting on price - the closest thing to a real fight Hasselblad has. Leica plays the premium-brand game from a different angle. And below all of them, the full-frame majors - Canon, Nikon and Sony - own the volume Hasselblad has never wanted.
So where does it fit within the market? At the top of a small mountain, holding a position almost nobody else is trying to take: the biggest sensor you can actually carry, from a brand with an origin story printed on the surface of the Moon. Owners have come and gone - eight of them, at least - and the name has outlasted all of them. That is the quiet trick of Hasselblad. It is not the fastest camera company, or the largest. It is the one that keeps being worth buying.
