The open-source company that put a dashboard on nearly every ops screen - and turned "watch everything" into a $6B business.
In 2014 a Swedish developer named Torkel Odegaard was tired of ugly, rigid dashboards. So he built his own tool to visualize the streams of numbers pouring out of servers, and released it as open source. He called it Grafana. Within a few years it was running quietly on operations screens at banks, gaming studios, hospitals and space missions - and Odegaard, along with Raj Dutt and Anthony Woods, had turned the project into a company.
That company, Grafana Labs, now sits at the center of a category the software industry calls "observability" - the practice of understanding what complex systems are actually doing by collecting their metrics, logs, traces and profiles. It is a crowded, well-funded market. Grafana's distinction is that it did not try to own all of your data. It tried to become the pane of glass on top of it.
The strategy has a name inside the company: the "big tent." The idea is simple and slightly heretical for a vendor - you should be able to see your data no matter where it lives, using whatever tools already suit you. Grafana ships with more than 160 data source plugins so teams can pull in telemetry from rival systems rather than rip them out.
It worked. Grafana Labs has crossed $400 million in annual recurring revenue, serves more than 7,000 paying organizations - including roughly 70% of the Fortune 50 - and raised $270 million in 2024 at a $6 billion valuation. The core software, notably, remains free.
This is a profile of how an open-source project became an infrastructure company without asking anyone to switch.
"You should be able to access your data no matter where it lives, and choose the observability tools and strategies that best suit your needs." The "big tent" philosophy - Grafana Labs
The product, plainly. Grafana is a dashboarding and analytics tool. You connect it to your data sources - a metrics database here, a logging system there, a cloud provider's telemetry over there - and it renders live, queryable dashboards, sets alerts, and helps you find the one graph that explains why things broke at 3 a.m.
Who uses it. The users are engineers, SREs, DevOps and platform teams - the people responsible for keeping software online. That spans startups running a single app to Fortune 100 enterprises operating thousands of services, plus a new wave of AI companies watching their own infrastructure with Grafana Cloud.
The problem it solves. Modern systems are distributed and noisy. Teams end up with metrics in one tool, logs in another and traces in a third - "stack sprawl." Grafana's pitch is to correlate all of it in one place so an on-call engineer can move from "something is wrong" to "here is the cause" without switching windows.
Why it matters. When a payment system, a hospital record, or a model-serving cluster goes down, minutes cost money and trust. Observability is the difference between guessing and knowing. Grafana made the knowing part open, affordable and hard to argue with.
Grafana Labs built a family of open-source projects that together cover the pillars of observability. Insiders call it the LGTM stack - Loki, Grafana, Tempo, Mimir - wrapped by two commercial offerings, Grafana Cloud and Grafana Enterprise.
The open-source visualization layer with 160+ data source plugins for metrics, logs, traces and business data.
Fully managed platform bundling hosted Grafana with metrics, logs, traces, profiling and alerting - free tier included.
Self-hosted Grafana with premium plugins, governance, security and support.
Cost-efficient, horizontally scalable log aggregation, inspired by Prometheus.
High-scale distributed tracing backend for following requests across services.
Highly scalable, long-term storage for Prometheus metrics.
Continuous profiling to see exactly where code spends time and resources.
Developer-first, scriptable load and performance testing.
AI assistant that builds dashboards and runs root-cause investigations.
The competitive set is formidable - Datadog, New Relic, Splunk, Dynatrace, Elastic and the cloud providers' own monitoring services. Most of them sell one integrated, proprietary platform. Grafana's counter-position is flexibility: keep your tools, avoid lock-in, pay for convenience only where you want it.

StoryHow the project and company came to be, in Grafana Labs' own words.
It builds Grafana, an open-source observability and dashboarding platform, and sells managed and enterprise versions - Grafana Cloud and Grafana Enterprise - that unify metrics, logs, traces and profiles.
Yes. Grafana OSS and the core LGTM projects are free and open source. Grafana Labs monetizes hosting, support and premium features through Grafana Cloud (which has a free tier) and Grafana Enterprise.
It was founded in 2014 by Torkel Odegaard (who created Grafana), Raj Dutt (CEO) and Anthony Woods (CTO).
Roughly 1,800 employees, more than 7,000 paying organizations including about 70% of the Fortune 50, over $400M ARR, and a $6B valuation.
Grafana takes an open-core, "big tent" approach - it plugs into 160+ data sources so teams keep their existing tools rather than adopting a single proprietary platform, avoiding vendor lock-in.
