At Vestas, Douglas Smith works in the narrow space between an immense physical product and a simple public idea: wind can be dependable infrastructure. His brief is a reminder that the energy transition also has a translation problem.

Wind asks people to believe in something they cannot see. The machine that catches it has the opposite problem: it is almost comically visible, a tower and rotor planted against the horizon. Between invisible force and immense hardware sits a chain of explanation. Douglas Smith, a Chicago-based marketing executive at Vestas, works inside that chain. His title is Chief Marketing Officer. The more revealing description of the job is translator - between engineering and economics, global scale and local consequence, a turbine's technical capability and the reasons a community or customer might want it there.

This is marketing in a different register from the quick conversion and the impulse purchase. A wind project can take years to develop. In December 2025, Vestas reached 200 gigawatts of wind turbines installed worldwide. It had crossed 100 gigawatts in 2018; the next 100 took less than seven years. The milestone involved more than 90,000 turbines across 88 countries. By August 2026, the company's public dashboard put its installed base above 207 gigawatts and its combined capacity under service at 165 gigawatts.

A giant number creates attention and a problem. Two hundred gigawatts does not arrive in the mind with a natural picture attached. Capacity is not the same thing as annual generation. A fleet is not a single project. Global reach can blur the differences between a repowering site in Germany, an onshore build in the American West and an offshore installation in northern Europe.

The second 100 GW arrived in less than seven years. Installed capacity measures the rated output of the fleet, not electricity generated in a year.

The useful communications move is to keep the magnitude while restoring the parts. A turbine begins as a design and a supply chain. It becomes a route plan for transporting blades and nacelles, a civil-works site, a grid asset, a service schedule and a line on a utility's portfolio. Every layer has a different expert. Every expert can spot when the story has outrun the facts.

Marketing sits near the middle, where the temptation to compress is strongest and the cost of careless compression is highest.

The word “customer” also expands. Vestas sells to professional buyers, but renewable infrastructure is watched by people who will never sign a purchase order. Residents, workers, suppliers, elected officials and electricity users all form judgments. B2B communication becomes public communication the moment a project changes a landscape or enters a political debate.

North American context

Vestas reports more than 49,000 MW installed and more than 43,000 MW under service in the United States and Canada, supported by over 5,000 employees and two component factories in Colorado.

North America supplies its own set of translation tests. The same turbine can be discussed as domestic manufacturing, rural income, grid capacity, construction employment or a utility contract. Each frame is factual only when its boundaries are clear. A national supply-chain figure does not describe the benefit of every project. A regional fleet total does not predict one site's production. Precision begins by matching the scale of the claim to the scale of the evidence.

That discipline matters because infrastructure arguments tend to skip levels. A global climate target becomes a local permit discussion in a sentence. A factory investment becomes an assumption about a distant wind farm. The communicator's job is to put the missing steps back. Which component is made where? Which entity owns the project? Who maintains the equipment? What period does a number cover? The questions may sound small beside a 200 GW milestone, but they are how a large story earns belief one specific answer at a time.

Smith is based in Chicago, a useful vantage point for this work. The city is distant from Vestas' headquarters in Aarhus and connected to a continent-sized energy market where power is produced far from many of its users. Chicago itself knows the visual grammar of infrastructure: rail lines, grain elevators, freight yards, substations, towers. Systems hide in plain sight until they stop working.

Technicians keep it operating. Data reveals patterns. Components are repaired or replaced. Communities see whether promises survive contact with routine.

Vestas' own vocabulary emphasizes energy that is secure, affordable and sustainable. Each term carries a test. Security asks whether supply can be counted on. Affordability asks about cost across a system and over time. Sustainability asks about materials, manufacturing, operation and what happens at the end of a component's life. A marketing leader cannot settle those questions alone. The work is to connect the people who can answer them with the people who are asking.

That makes internal listening part of external clarity. The field technician knows a different truth from the brand team. The project developer knows which question keeps returning at town meetings. The salesperson hears the objection behind the polite question. The engineer knows which comparison breaks under scrutiny. Good communication gathers those truths before it publishes one.

The discipline of enough

There is an understandable urge to make every clean-energy message carry the moral weight of the entire transition. The result can be a sentence so inflated that no individual project could support it. Smith's context points toward a more durable approach: make the claim fit the evidence, then make the evidence easy to find.

This restraint is not timidity. It is a way to protect the future message. Energy markets shift. Policy changes. Projects encounter delays. Technology improves. A story built around one breathless promise becomes brittle. A story built around a clear mechanism can absorb new facts.

The practical playbook is compact. Replace generic scale with a map of the system. Separate capacity from generation. Put service beside installation. Translate technical language once, then link to the technical detail. Treat communities as audiences with agency, not scenery. Use milestones as doors into understanding rather than trophies placed at the end of a sentence.
