Dispatch is building the part of space everyone forgets: the ride home
Two engineers left good jobs building satellites to solve a stubborn problem - it costs more to bring cargo down from orbit than to send it up. Their answer: reusable reentry vehicles and factories with no people in them.
The space industry has spent two decades getting very good at one direction: up. Rockets land themselves, launch costs have fallen by an order of magnitude, and a small satellite ride to orbit is now something you can practically buy off a menu. Dispatch, a San Francisco startup in Y Combinator's Spring 2026 batch, is built on a quieter observation - almost nobody has bothered to fix the trip back down.
That gap turns out to be expensive. NASA pays roughly twice as much to return cargo from the International Space Station as it does to launch it. Human-rated return vehicles carry the overhead of keeping people alive. And return slots are scarce, scheduled on someone else's calendar, tied to a station that is aging with an uncertain future. If you want to make something valuable in orbit, the hard question isn't how it gets up there. It's how it comes home.
01 / The ThesisBring your payload home
Dispatch's pitch fits on a bumper sticker: bringing things back from space shouldn't cost more than sending them up. The company is building two things to make that true. The first is a line of refurbishable reentry vehicles - reusable spacecraft that carry cargo to low Earth orbit and return it safely, then swap heat shields and fly again. The lead vehicle is called Spark 1. A subscale demonstrator, sized for roughly 30 kilograms of payload, is targeted for a first flight in 2027; the full-scale version is designed to return around 300 kilograms.
The second is bigger and further out: an uncrewed space station, a permanent orbital platform that hosts manufacturing hardware. Think of it as the factory floor, with Spark vehicles acting as the delivery trucks that shuttle finished goods down and raw materials up.
02 / The CustomersDrugs, chips, and zero gravity
Who actually wants a factory in orbit? For Dispatch, the answer is anyone making materials whose value per gram is high enough to justify the trip - pharmaceutical, biotech, and semiconductor manufacturers. Microgravity lets certain crystals grow more perfectly, certain fibers form without the sag of gravity, certain drug formulations behave in ways that are hard or impossible to replicate on the ground. The economics only work if you can get the product back cheaply and on your own schedule, which is precisely the constraint Dispatch is attacking.
Today those customers are prospective. Dispatch is a pre-revenue company with a demonstration flight still ahead of it. But the demand it is designing for is concrete: firms that have looked at making things in space and been stopped at the return leg.
03 / The DifferenceTake the people out
The crowded corners of this market - commercial space stations like Vast and Axiom - are largely designed for humans. Dispatch's contrarian move is to design people out entirely. Cargo doesn't breathe, doesn't need an escape pod, doesn't require a life-support budget. Strip those requirements and the whole system gets cheaper and simpler. On the return side, the closest comparisons are companies like Varda Space Industries and Inversion Space, which are also chasing manufacturing and reentry. Dispatch's wager is that owning both the factory and the truck - uncrewed, refurbishable, and frugal - is the combination that scales.
The frugality isn't just a slide. The founders built and tested a full-scale reentry heat shield in the Mojave Desert, rated for Mach 20-plus, for a reported hundredth of what incumbents spend. It's the kind of result that says less about one part and more about how much of the industry's cost is habit.

CEO Payton Case led next-generation geostationary spacecraft design in the office of the CTO at Astranis, and earlier supported NASA's Lunar Gateway program in the thermal group at The Aerospace Corporation - relevant experience for a company whose hardest problem is surviving heat. CTO Andrew Mello ran the avionics team at Astranis after building electrical and software systems at Zoox and Apple. President Danny Nemer brings the startup-operator side, with a string of earlier companies behind him. It's a hardware-first group betting that the moat in space is the physics nobody else wants to touch.
06 / The MarketWhere it fits
In-space manufacturing has been a someday story for years, mostly stalled on cost and access. As launch prices fall and commercial stations move from slideware toward hardware, the bottleneck shifts to the two things Dispatch is building: a place to make things, and a reliable, affordable way to bring them down. Whether the 2027 and 2029 targets hold is the open question - hardware timelines rarely do - but the position is a clear one. Dispatch has planted its flag on the neglected half of the space economy and is trying to make coming home the easy part.
