Reditus Space Is Building the Return Trip From Orbit

Everyone in the space business is obsessed with launch. Two Georgia Tech engineers looked at the other half of the problem - getting things back down - and turned it into a company, a $7.1M seed round, and a capsule now sitting at the launch site.

The word reditus is Latin for "return," and it is the whole thesis in a single syllable. Reditus Space, founded in 2024 in Atlanta, does not want to be another company racing to leave the planet. It wants to be the one that reliably brings things home. Its product is a reusable spacecraft that goes up, hosts a payload in orbit for a couple of months, and then comes back down through the atmosphere at up to Mach 29 to be recovered, refurbished, and flown again.

That focus sounds narrow until you notice the gap it fills. After the Space Shuttle retired, the industry got very good at launch and very bad at everything that comes after. Rockets got cheaper, cadence went up, satellites multiplied. But the ability to bring cargo down from orbit - the industry calls it "downmass" - stayed rare and expensive. If you make something valuable in space, you still have a hard time getting it to a customer on Earth. Reditus decided that was the interesting problem.

01 / THE FOUNDERSTwo engineers, one missing capability

The company came out of Georgia Tech. Stef Crum, now CEO, is a space systems engineer with a PhD and prior work with NASA and the Space Force on orbital operations and reentry. Will Sherman, the CTO, was deep into an aerospace PhD at Georgia Tech when he left the program to build the thing full time. They met over graduate research, kept circling the same conclusion, and incorporated in October 2024.

The team they assembled reads like a who's-who of the field - people who have shipped hardware at SpaceX, Blue Origin, JPL, NASA, and the Department of Defense. That pedigree matters in a business where a single reentry either works or turns your payload into a streak of light.

02 / THE PRODUCTMeet ENOS

ENOS is the first vehicle. It is a free-flying reentry capsule, roughly 200 kilograms fully loaded, carrying a 40-kilogram return-capable payload with plans to grow that to 60 kilograms on later versions. The flight profile is simple to describe and hard to build: deploy into low Earth orbit, host the payload for about two months, then reenter at up to Mach 29 and splash down off the coast of Florida for recovery. The heat shield is a proprietary design built to survive that punishment more than once, because reuse is the entire economic argument.

The pace has been the story. Reditus finished the full-scale ENOS vehicle in July 2026, roughly a year after founding, and shipped it to Vandenberg Space Force Base for a Fall 2026 launch as a rideshare on a SpaceX Falcon 9. Recovery is targeted by December 2026, with a second-generation flight planned for mid-2027. For a hardware company, going from incorporation to a finished spacecraft in about twelve months is the real signal.

The business model is a service, not a spaceship sale. Reditus sells access to orbit and a guaranteed way back down. A customer buys room aboard the capsule to run an experiment or manufacture a material in microgravity, and Reditus returns the result to Earth. Missions have been discussed at roughly $4 million per launch, with reusability spreading the vehicle's cost across many flights - the same logic that made reusable rockets work, applied to the return leg.

Why bother going to orbit to make things at all? Because gravity gets in the way of certain processes. In microgravity you can grow more uniform protein crystals for drug formulation, produce purer optical and semiconductor materials, and control material processing in ways the ground does not allow. The science on that has been understood for decades. What has been missing is a cheap, routine way to bring the output home. That is the market Reditus is aiming at: pharmaceutical and biotech firms, semiconductor and optics makers, research institutions, and defense customers who can use the high-speed reentry itself as a hypersonic test environment.

The science of making things in orbit is largely solved. The logistics of getting them back are not. Reditus is a logistics company wearing a spacecraft.

Reditus is not alone in noticing the return problem - Varda Space, Atmos Space Cargo, and Inversion Space are chasing versions of the same opportunity, and earlier efforts like Made in Space proved the manufacturing side works. The field is young enough that no one has locked it up. Two forces are pushing it forward: the wind-down of the International Space Station in the 2030s, which removes a major venue for orbital research and creates demand for private platforms, and the general collapse in launch cost, which makes flying a small capsule far more affordable than it used to be.

05 / THE PLACEWhy Atlanta

Reditus is deliberately not in Los Angeles. Atlanta sits on top of a deep aerospace and hypersonics talent pool - Delta, Lockheed Martin, Gulfstream, and a Georgia Tech pipeline - where the engineering skills transfer cleanly to spacecraft and far fewer space startups are competing to hire them. The founders have been explicit that this is a feature. When the labor market for rocket engineers is brutal on the coasts, a large population of adjacent, easily retrained talent in your backyard is an edge.

The company also leans on modern tooling to move fast. It selected PTC's cloud-native Onshape CAD platform to speed development of the reentry capsule, alongside a stack of simulation tools that let a small team iterate on a vehicle that has to survive one of the most violent environments in engineering.

A hundred of them, on a schedule, at a predictable price, is infrastructure - and infrastructure is where the durable businesses live. If the company can turn coming home from orbit into something as unremarkable as a delivery, it stops being a science project and becomes the layer everyone building in space quietly depends on. ENOS's first flight this fall is the first real test of whether that is possible.
