The Culligan technician arrives after the water has already made its argument. The glasses look cloudy. The shower door has acquired a pale geology. Coffee tastes faintly municipal. Somewhere below the kitchen, a pipe is collecting a mineral memory of every gallon that passed through it. Culligan tests the water, recommends a machine, installs it and, crucially, does not disappear.
That last part explains more about Culligan International than its familiar blue loop or its old “Hey, Culligan Man!” jingle. A water softener is hardware. A reverse-osmosis unit is hardware. But testing, salt delivery, filter replacement, sanitization, monitoring and repair are a relationship. Culligan says those customer relationships last more than 10 years on average. The filter opens the door; the route keeps it open.
Founded by Emmett J. Culligan in 1936, the Rosemont, Illinois, company now reports $3.4 billion in annual revenue, more than 18,000 employees and over 22 million active installations. Its systems serve more than 170 million people a year across more than 100 countries. Those numbers make it a large hardware company. Its 8,000-plus service routes and 1,300-plus branches make it something more unusual: a global company whose product is delivered locally, often through a side door.
The machine is only the first sale
Culligan solves several problems that share a pipe. Hard water leaves scale on fixtures and inside appliances. Chlorine, sediment, metals and other contaminants can change taste, odor or confidence. Offices want cold and sparkling water without storing jugs. Restaurants want filtered still and sparkling water that can sit on a table without looking like an afterthought. Industrial users need water conditioned for equipment and processes.
The company meets those needs with softeners, whole-home filters, under-sink reverse osmosis, well-water treatment, bottled delivery, hot-and-cold dispensers and bottleless coolers. A local expert can test the source, size the system and install it. Afterward come the less glamorous jobs that make the product work: replacing filters on schedule, replenishing salt, cleaning reservoirs and fixing faults.
This is the economic flywheel. Culligan sells systems, but it also rents equipment and charges fixed monthly prices for some workplace dispensers, including service. It earns recurring revenue through maintenance, consumables, salt and water delivery, and commercial contracts. Customers avoid becoming amateur water technicians. Culligan gets another scheduled interaction.

One company, five ways to drink
Culligan International is the parent, not merely the name on the softener. The flagship Culligan brand spans residential and commercial treatment. Culligan Quench focuses on workplace hydration, with bottleless coolers, ice, coffee, sparkling water and flavored options. Zip Water makes boiling, chilled and sparkling multifunction taps. Purezza sells filtered table-water systems to hospitality. Culligan Harvey is known for compact, non-electric softeners in the United Kingdom.

The portfolio gives Culligan more doors into the same fundamental market. A family worried about scale is not shopping like a facilities manager replacing office bottles, and neither resembles a hotel trying to improve table service. The brands let the company change the interface while sharing research, manufacturing, procurement and route density behind it.
Acquisitions accelerated that map. A group led by BDT Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in 2021, with Mubadala as an anchor capital partner and Advent retaining a minority interest. Culligan combined with Waterlogic in 2022, adding workplace dispenser technology, manufacturing and distribution. In early 2024 it bought most of Primo Water’s EMEA operations, deepening coverage in 12 countries and entering Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
The modern Culligan Man carries diagnostics
The latest hardware shows where the model is going. Culligan Purity, a commercial dispenser introduced in selected European markets, combines multistage filtration with Firewall UVC treatment, C-Sense real-time water-quality monitoring and connected diagnostics. It dispenses still, cold, hot, sparkling or boiling water depending on configuration. It can also track volume and estimate how many single-use bottles a workplace avoids.
Purity won a Red Dot Product Design award in 2026, but the operational feature is more revealing than the silhouette. IoT diagnostics can alert service teams, reduce downtime and extend equipment life. In other words, connected hardware makes the return visit better timed. Culligan’s old service promise gets a sensor layer.
Its wider expertise sits at the intersection of water chemistry, mechanical engineering and field operations. Reverse osmosis uses a membrane to reduce dissolved contaminants. Ion exchange tackles hardness. Carbon filtration can improve taste and odor. UVC targets microorganisms at dispensing. The difficult commercial act is not inventing one of those processes; it is choosing the right combination for a specific source, maintaining it and making the experience simple enough that the customer does not need a chemistry lesson before breakfast.
Between the utility and the glass
Culligan operates downstream of municipal water systems and upstream of the sip. It does not replace the utility. It changes water at the point where a household or business uses it. That places the company between retail filter brands such as Brita, equipment makers such as Pentair and A. O. Smith, specialist dealer systems such as Kinetico and EcoWater, bottled-water delivery firms, and large industrial treatment providers.
Its difference is breadth joined to field service. A pitcher company can offer a cheaper first step. A local dealer may know the aquifer intimately. An industrial specialist may handle a more complicated plant. Culligan’s wager is that global purchasing, brands and science can coexist with local diagnosis and labor. It says its service network is five times larger than the nearest competitor’s and includes 13,000-plus sales and service representatives.
Scale also improves the mundane mathematics of a route. More installed machines in a territory can mean shorter drives between calls, better parts availability and more observations about the water in that market. The branch learns which wells carry iron, which municipal supplies change seasonally and which office machines empty fastest. That knowledge is not a patent, but it compounds. A global catalog tells the technician what can be installed; repeated local visits teach the branch what should be installed.
There are tradeoffs. Softening consumes salt and water during regeneration. Reverse osmosis produces reject water. Bottleless coolers still require filters, electricity and service travel. Claims about bottles or carbon avoided depend on what the customer would have done instead. Culligan’s climate case is strongest where a maintained point-of-use system actually displaces packaged water, not where a sustainability counter merely decorates a screen.
The company estimates its products help avoid about 45 billion single-use plastic bottles a year. In 2024 it also sold Commercial & Industrial operations in Italy, France and the United Kingdom to Grundfos, sharpening Culligan’s public emphasis on household, workplace, hospitality and public-venue drinking water. It still serves commercial customers, but its identity is increasingly “water services” rather than a catch-all industrial treatment conglomerate.

Make the maintenance part of the product
Culligan’s founder reportedly began with zeolite, a perforated coffee can and the conviction that ordinary water could be improved. Ninety years later, the company supplies hydration stations to the Eurovision Song Contest, puts connected dispensers in offices and sends technicians back to basements. The technology changed. The choreography did not.
That is the stealable idea. Start with an annoying, recurring physical problem. Diagnose it before selling. Install the remedy. Bundle the upkeep. Let local operators own the customer relationship while the parent supplies product development, training and purchasing scale. Measure success not only in units shipped, but in active installations, route density and years retained.
For customers, the useful question is equally plain: do you want to buy a device or outsource the water problem? A simple pitcher may be enough for taste. A tested whole-home system can address harder problems. An office that wants cold, sparkling and boiling water without bottle storage may prefer a rental with maintenance included. Culligan is strongest when the nuisance is large enough that reliable service matters.
The company’s most durable invention may not sit inside a tank. It is the expectation that when the water misbehaves, somebody will come through the door, test it and know what to do next.
