Craze Wrote Its Own Obituary. Then It Came Back as AI Video.

The Y Combinator company spent three years building payroll software for Indian founders, then killed it in a single LinkedIn post. Same name, same team, entirely new problem: turning creative direction into finished video.

On or around April 1, 2025, Kabir Nagral posted four words that most founders spend their whole careers avoiding: "Craze is officially dead." It was April Fools' Day, so a fair number of people in the comments assumed he was joking. He was not. The HR and payroll company he and Deepit Patil had built through Y Combinator's Summer 2022 batch was being shut down. And in the same breath, Nagral announced what came next: "Starting today, I'm joining hands with some great people to build Craze AI."

Craze is dead. Long live Craze. It is the rare startup story where the funeral and the christening happen in the same sentence - and where the company that emerges keeps the name of the one it buried.

01 / WHAT IT IS NOWA video editor that wants direction, not prompts

Go to craze.ai today and there is no mention of payroll, no leave tracker, no attendance geo-fencing. Instead there is a single promise: "The AI video maker that plans, edits and turns creative direction into tasteful videos." You can hand it your own footage to cut, or ask it to generate a video from scratch. It handles the plan, the motion graphics, the music, the AI avatars, and the export.

The word doing the heavy lifting is "direction." Most AI video tools sell you a text box: type a prompt, pull the lever, see what falls out. Craze's pitch is that you bring the taste and it handles the labor - closer to briefing an editor than feeding a slot machine. Whether the output lives up to "tasteful" is something each user judges for themselves, but the positioning is deliberate. In a market flooded with generated clips that look generated, Craze is betting the differentiator is judgment.

Craze is dead. Long live Craze. The pivot, in five words

02 / THE FIRST LIFEPayroll for founders who hated payroll

To understand the second Craze, you have to sit with the first one. When Nagral - a computer science dropout from Harvard - and Patil - who studied computational mechanics at IIT Delhi - went through YC in 2022, the product was unglamorous and genuinely useful: HR, payroll and compliance for Indian founders and growing teams, in one place. One click to run end-to-end payroll. Onboarding, attendance, leave, reimbursements, expenses, even IT asset management and statutory compliance folded into a single system.

It was built, in the company's own framing, "by founders for founders." The pain was real - anyone who has run a small Indian company knows compliance is a maze - and Craze had customers, backing from Nexus Venture Partners and Soma Capital on top of YC, and the kind of steady, spreadsheet-shaped business that investors like. Which is exactly what makes the decision to shut it down interesting.

Read across: different surfaces, one obsession - take a tedious job and make it disappear.

Look at the two products side by side and the pivot stops looking reckless. Payroll and video editing sound like opposite universes. But both answer the same founder-brain question: how do I get a hard, repetitive job done without hiring someone to do it? Craze never fell in love with payroll. It fell in love with removing drudgery. When a bigger version of that problem showed up - the AI wave - it followed the obsession, not the sunk cost.

03 / THE TURNWhat actually changed in 2025

The pivot happened in two moves, not one. First, Craze reemerged as a general AI layer - "actually do things with the right AI models, apps and agents for you." The idea was to stop treating AI as a chat partner and start using it to complete real tasks: marketing campaigns, hiring, workflow automation, event planning. Then the focus narrowed, hard, onto one of those tasks where the demand was loudest and the pain most visible: video.

Not revenue. A rough map of where the company pointed its energy over time, from public product pages.

The tell is in the plumbing. The old domain, crazehq.com, now issues a permanent redirect to craze.ai. The social handles quietly migrated from @Craze_HQ to @crazedotai across X, Instagram and YouTube. The YC S22 badge stayed. Nothing about the origin was erased; it was carried forward. For a company that had every reason to rebrand and pretend the first act never happened, that continuity is a choice - and, arguably, a moat. Brand equity is expensive to build and cheap to throw away in a panic.

04 / WHO IT'S FORThe person who can direct but can't edit

Craze's customer in this second life is broad by design: creators making UGC and ads, founders who need a launch video by Friday, marketers turning a brief into a reel, and people making the deeply human stuff - music videos, wedding highlight reels, the montage for a friend's birthday. What unites them is a gap. They have taste and a vision. They do not have a timeline, a plugin library, and a free afternoon to learn Premiere.

The unlock isn't cheaper video. It's that you can direct instead of drag clips on a timeline. The Craze bet, in one line

05 / THE MODELNineteen dollars and a stack of models

The business model is straightforward SaaS. The AI video product is offered at $19 a month, which includes $19 of monthly credits, access to the latest AI models under the hood, human editor support, AI avatars, cloud storage, and unlimited exports. Priced against the cost of a single freelance editor for a single afternoon, the pitch writes itself. Priced against the flood of free-tier AI video toys, the differentiator has to be the output and the editor-in-the-loop support.

06 / THE FIELDWhere it sits, and who it's up against

Craze is playing in the most crowded corner of AI right now. On one side are the raw generation engines - Runway, Pika, Google's Veo, OpenAI's Sora - that produce clips from prompts. On the other are the workflow tools - Captions, InVideo AI, Descript, and CapCut's AI features - that help you assemble and polish. Craze is trying to live in between: generate when you need to, edit when you have footage, and glue it together with a sense of direction. In its former life, the comparison set was completely different - Deel, Rippling, RazorpayX Payroll, Keka, Zoho - which is its own quiet proof of how far the company moved.

07 / THE THROUGH-LINEThe expertise is the willingness to be wrong

It is tempting to say Craze's expertise is AI, or video, or software. The more honest read is that its expertise is founder decision-making under uncertainty. Nagral and Patil built a working product, watched the ground shift, and made the unglamorous call to let go of something real in order to chase something bigger. They did it in public, on the one day of the year designed to make people not believe you, and they kept their investors, their team, and their name intact through the transition.

Most companies pivot quietly and hope no one notices the old landing page. Craze announced its own death, then shipped. If the AI video product works, the story will be told as vision. If it doesn't, it will be told as a cautionary tale. Either way, the interesting part is already on the record: a startup that treated its own name as bigger than any single product, and was willing to prove it.
