The Edinburgh-born company teaching software to answer the first, most expensive question in any infrastructure project: where should it go?
Before a single tower is raised or a metre of pipe is laid, an infrastructure project has to survive a quieter, slower ordeal: deciding where it goes. A power line, a water main or a hydrogen pipeline can run a hundred different ways across the same landscape, and each option carries its own tangle of costs - land, terrain, protected habitats, communities, permits, engineering constraints. Traditionally, teams of engineers spent months comparing a handful of those options by hand. Continuum Industries built a company on the premise that this was the wrong way round.
Founded in 2018 out of a university project in Scotland, Continuum Industries develops Optioneer, an AI-powered platform that ingests geospatial data and planning rules, then tests millions of possible routes against environmental, social, cost and technical criteria at once. Instead of a shortlist assembled over a year, Optioneer returns one in hours. The company's own framing is blunt: the world has to build an enormous amount of new grid and water infrastructure, quickly, and the planning stage is where most of the time - and most of the avoidable mistakes - hides.
It is a deliberately narrow focus. Continuum does not lay cable or dig trenches. It sells the decision layer that runs before anyone breaks ground, and it has convinced more than fifty utilities and developers that getting that decision right, fast, is worth paying for.

Optioneer sits at the earliest stage of a project, the moment where a route is little more than two points on a map and a long list of unknowns between them. The platform combines spatial data, infrastructure modelling, optimisation algorithms, automation and reporting into a single environment.
Feed it a study area and a set of constraints - avoid this wetland, minimise cost, stay clear of these homes, respect that gradient - and it evaluates millions of alternatives, scoring each against the full set of criteria simultaneously. The output is not a single "answer" but a defensible shortlist an engineer can take to a regulator or a community meeting.
The problems it attacks are concrete: planning cycles measured in months, decisions made on incomplete information, and the compounding cost of a route chosen badly at the start. By front-loading the analysis, Continuum aims to turn the riskiest phase of a project into its most informed one.
It works across the infrastructure that rarely makes headlines but underpins daily life - electricity transmission and distribution, water and wastewater networks, and gas, hydrogen and CO2 pipelines.
Terrain, habitats, land use, existing assets and constraints are pulled together into one model of the study area.

Optioneer's users are utilities, transmission and distribution operators, water companies, renewable-energy developers and the engineering consultancies that serve them. Continuum reports the platform deployed across 55+ organisations - a customer base that spans the UK, mainland Europe and, increasingly, the United States.
The default has been engineers and GIS analysts comparing a handful of routes by hand, a process that is slow, hard to repeat, and limited to the options a human can hold in mind.
Optioneer evaluates orders of magnitude more options and weighs every criterion together, surfacing routes a manual study would never reach.
Continuum is trialing Biodiversity Net Gain in the first pass of design - treating nature as a design input rather than a late compliance check.

The value proposition is time: compress the front end of a project and the savings ripple through everything downstream.
In September 2023 Continuum Industries closed a $10M (about £8.2M) Series A led by Paris-based Singular, with Czech firm Credo Ventures, Techstart Ventures, Playfair and angels from UiPath, Skyscanner and SSE. The round brought total funding to roughly $15.6M.

Most climate software measures things - emissions, energy, risk. Continuum sits somewhere more physical: the point where a clean-energy ambition becomes a construction plan. Its competition is less a rival app than the status quo of manual optioneering and general-purpose GIS tools bent to a job they were not designed for. As grids expand and water systems strain, the market Continuum is betting on - software that decides where to build - grows with every new project on the map.
