Chris Marlin and the business behind the business

Fifteen years at Zappos took Chris Marlin across finance, supply chains and merchandising. His next chapters led through restaurants and tequila in Mexico to CFO services at Venture First.

A pair of shoes is an unusually complicated way to make money. Before anyone wears it, somebody has chosen a style, ordered the right sizes, arranged its passage through a warehouse and made a bet on what a customer will want. By the time it reaches a doorstep, a small procession of financial decisions has already taken place.

Chris Marlin spent 15 years at Zappos working across the departments that make those decisions. Financial planning and analysis, supply chain, merchandising: the list has the dry sound of an organizational chart. Taken together, it describes the distance between an idea about what will sell and a business that can actually sell it.

His subsequent career moved into a different collection of products and places. There were restaurants and tequila businesses, financial and legal operations in Mexico, and an investment in a restaurant group in Guadalajara. In April 2025, he joined Venture First. The current title is Vice President, CFO Services. The useful thread through the story is the movement between numbers and operations.

The departments behind the doorstep

Merchandising gives retail a point of view. It determines what belongs in the assortment and what can be left out. Supply chain turns that choice into something a customer can receive. Financial planning asks what the choices require, and what the business can expect in return. Each function has its own vocabulary. The same pair of shoes travels through all three.

Working across them creates a different view of a company from working inside any one of them. An assortment decision has consequences for inventory. Inventory has consequences for cash. A forecast can be perfectly neat while the operation it describes remains wonderfully untidy. Customers, after all, are under no obligation to admire a spreadsheet.

THE RETAIL CONNECTION

One product, several conversations. These are the functions Marlin’s Zappos experience crossed.

The career distinction is the breadth of that work. A finance executive who has also worked in merchandising has encountered the product decisions behind a financial result. Supply-chain experience adds another set of practical questions about how those decisions become deliveries. For Marlin, these were parts of the same long tenure.

A treasurer among the fashion people

In 2017, Marlin was listed as Senior Director of Merchandising and Operations at Zappos. He was also treasurer of the Las Vegas Fashion Council. It is a pleasingly economical pairing: a job concerned with the business of selling fashion, and a community role concerned with keeping an organization’s finances in order.

The council’s October newsletter announced scholarships in partnership with the Public Education Foundation, with applications for awards to be announced the following spring. Its board brought together people from fashion, law, events and local business. Marlin’s treasury position placed him in that wider Las Vegas professional community.

Fashion naturally attracts attention to the finished object. A council also has the quieter needs of an organization: administration, money and people willing to take responsibility for both. The title of treasurer sits comfortably beside merchandising and operations. Style may enjoy the spotlight; someone still has to mind the accounts.

An editorial observation

The next chapter spoke Spanish

After Zappos, Marlin joined the family office of its founders. His remit covered strategy and finance for three portfolio companies connected to restaurants and tequila. He oversaw their financial and legal operations in Mexico and led an investment in a Guadalajara restaurant group.

This was a change in industry as well as geography. An online retailer and a restaurant may both sell to customers, but their daily operations have different rhythms. The transition gives his career an interesting shape: long experience inside one retail organization, followed by responsibility across a small group of businesses.

Spanish was part of his working equipment. Fluent in the language, he also had Latin American expertise connected to earlier work with the Spanish government. That background belongs in the professional story because his next responsibilities involved businesses in Mexico. The language skill had a direct setting in which to matter.

Finance takes a seat at the table

Venture First’s CFO practice covers financial modeling and reporting, strategic finance and accounting. Its services include forecasting, board reporting, cash-flow management and due diligence. The firm describes a team approach that can scale with a client’s requirements.

That is the context for Marlin’s current position. A growing business has to connect its plans with its capital needs. It needs reports that help management understand performance and forecasts that make future requirements visible. An outside CFO practice can bring those capabilities into the company’s work.

The questions are practical ones. What does the plan require? When will the money be needed? Which decisions change the forecast? Marlin’s operating background gives his biography particular relevance to this setting. He has worked in functions that sit behind the figures a finance team eventually reports.

There is a Louisville connection, too. He graduated from the University of Louisville; Venture First is based in that city. His education also includes executive coursework at Columbia Business School. His home remains Las Vegas, where he lives with his wife and three children.

Another current professional listing places him at K9s.org as Vice President of Finance and Administration in Nevada. Alongside the former fashion-council role, it adds an organizational setting beyond his corporate career. The responsibilities named are familiar: finance and the work of keeping an institution running.

The interesting thing about Marlin’s path is how little it respects departmental boundaries. Shoes led into merchandising and supply chains. The next businesses involved restaurants, tequila and another country. Today, CFO services bring those operating experiences into the same professional frame. A title fits on one line. The business behind it takes rather more room.
