Company Profile Ecommerce & Fintech South Africa

Bob Has Been Selling South Africa Everything Since 1999. Now It Wants the Whole Transaction.

The company that began as bidorbuy - a R1, no-reserve auction site - quietly stitched a marketplace, a payment gateway, a courier network and 250 smart lockers into one login. It is chasing unicorn status the unglamorous way: one parcel at a time.

In August 1999, before Takealot existed and while Amazon was still mostly a bookstore, a South African site called bidorbuy let anyone put an item online with a starting price of one rand and no reserve. Collectables, car parts, a spare cellphone - if you could photograph it, you could auction it. The site survived the dotcom crash, outlasted a brief expansion into India and Australia, and became the default place South Africans went to buy and sell online. Twenty-six years later it answers to a shorter name: Bob.

The rename was not cosmetic. Under the hood, Bob - officially Bob Group - has spent the last few years turning four separate businesses into one connected system. There is the marketplace you already knew, now called Bob Shop. There is a payment gateway, Bob Pay. There is a courier-comparison and shipping service, Bob Go. And there is Bob Box, a growing network of smart parcel lockers. Sign in once and you can list a product, take the money, book the courier and have the parcel dropped in a locker without ever leaving the ecosystem.

01 / WHAT IT DOESFour apps, one checkout

Most online sellers in South Africa do not have a logistics team or a payments department. They have a phone, a bank account and a box that needs to reach a customer in a different province. Bob's pitch is to remove the seams between the four things that usually break an online order: showing the product, collecting payment, arranging delivery and confirming collection. Each of those is a commodity on its own. Stitching them into a single experience is the actual product.

The whole stack on one screen. A marketplace, a wallet, a courier desk and a wall of lockers - Bob's bet is that owning the seams beats owning any single layer.

02 / WHO USES ITEveryone from a first-time seller to a national brand

On the buying side, Bob Shop serves ordinary South African shoppers hunting for electronics, car parts, clothing and the collectables the site was founded on. On the selling side, the customer is broader: hobbyists clearing a garage, small businesses making the offline-to-online jump, direct-to-consumer brands, and larger merchants who want payments and shipping handled without wiring together five different vendors. The common thread is that Bob's tools are meant to work for someone listing their first item and someone processing thousands of orders a month.

What can a person actually do with it? A shopper can browse more than three million items across upward of thirty categories, then pay by card, EFT or real-time bank transfer and choose to have the order dropped at a nearby locker rather than waiting at home for a courier. A seller can open a listing in minutes, let Bob Pay handle the money and reconciliation, compare a dozen couriers through Bob Go for the cheapest sensible route, and hand the parcel to the network without printing a stack of paperwork. For a small business, that collapses what used to be several separate suppliers into a single account and a single invoice.

03 / THE PROBLEMTrust, delivery and load-shedding

South African ecommerce carries a few specific frictions. Buyers have historically been wary of paying strangers online. Deliveries fail when the courier is wrong for the route. And the country's rolling power cuts, known locally as load-shedding, can knock out anything that depends on a live connection at the wrong moment. Bob's product decisions read as direct answers to each. Bob Pay leans on secure methods, automated reconciliation and fraud management to close the trust gap. Bob Go removes the guesswork of picking a courier. And Bob Box lockers are built to keep working through load-shedding - a detail that says more about designing for the country than any slogan could.

04 / WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENTOwning the plumbing, not one pipe

Plenty of companies own a piece of the South African online transaction. Takealot and Amazon.co.za dominate the marketplace layer. Yoco, Peach Payments and Ozow compete on payments. Pargo, Pudo and Aramex run lockers and last-mile logistics. Shopify hands merchants their own storefronts. Bob's difference is that it does not try to win any single one of those outright. It runs all four as one account, so the marketplace listing, the card or PayShap payment, the courier booking and the locker collection reference the same order. For a small seller, that is the difference between one dashboard and four contracts.

The past 26 years have seen rapid user growth and our product offering has expanded into the millions. Our tech innovations have enabled South Africans to transact, grow businesses, and ultimately create a brighter future over a generation.Craig Lubbe, Head of Marketplace, Bob

05 / THE FINTECH TURNPayShap and the quiet war on card fees

The most recent piece is a payments feature that matters more than it sounds. Bob Pay added support for PayShap, South Africa's real-time payment rail, letting a merchant request money and receive it in seconds - pulled straight from a customer's bank account using nothing but a phone number or account number. There is no card in the loop and no pre-registered wallet ID required. For higher-value orders, where card fees stack up, capped real-time payments can be meaningfully cheaper. Bob positions itself as one of the first South African providers to ship the feature, and it slots into the same plugins that already connect Bob Pay to Shopify and WooCommerce stores.

The South African payments landscape is in a period of exciting change, and our PayShap integration positions us as a key player.Andy Higgins, Managing Director, Bob

06 / THE BUSINESSHow Bob makes money

Bob's model is the sum of its layers. The marketplace earns seller fees and commissions. Bob Pay takes a cut of the payments it processes. Bob Go earns on shipping and courier margins. Bob Box monetises locker usage. Because the four sit in one account, each new merchant is a chance to sell up the stack - a seller who joins for the marketplace can be nudged into payments, then shipping, then lockers. The group grew out of a 2022 merger between bidorbuy and the logistics company uAfrica, and its portfolio also includes a software-as-a-service logistics platform, Ship Logic. Bob has been public about the ambition behind all of this: to build a technology-driven, billion-dollar South African company and reach the unicorn status that few African tech firms have.

07 / EXPERTISE & HISTORYA quarter-century of not dying

Longevity is its own kind of expertise. bidorbuy was launched by Andy Higgins during the dotcom boom, backed early by a small group that included Yair Tauman, Abraham Neyman, Danny Barnea and Zohar Gilon. The company expanded to India and Australia in 2000, retreated after the crash - the Indian arm eventually folded into Baazee.com, which eBay bought in 2004 - and then spent two decades compounding at home. It took a stake in payments provider PayFast in 2010 and in uAfrica in 2014, long before either move looked obvious. The 2022 merger and the 2023 rebrand to Bob were the visible tip of a much longer strategy: gather the pieces, then connect them.

That history also shapes how the marketplace has evolved. Bob Shop began as a home for hard-to-find collectables sold at R1 with no reserve, the kind of listings that made auctions feel like a treasure hunt. Over time the inventory shifted toward everyday goods - electronics, car parts, clothing - and toward fixed prices, with roughly four in five items now sold new at a set price rather than bid up. The company has layered AI-driven tools on top to streamline how sellers create listings and how buyers search, so a catalogue that grew into the millions stays navigable. The auction format that made its name is still there; it is just no longer the whole story.

08 / THE MARKETWhere Bob fits

Bob sits at the intersection of three markets that usually have separate players - online marketplaces, digital payments, and delivery and logistics. Its edge is not being the biggest in any one of them but being present, and connected, across all three, tuned for South African conditions. Whether that adds up to a unicorn is an open question. What is clear is the approach: rather than one splashy launch, Bob is compounding through the unglamorous parts of commerce - a payment cleared, a courier chosen, a parcel collected from a locker that still works when the lights go out.
