Light as a Crop Input

BioLumic sells something farmers have never bought before: a dose of light. The company applies precisely tuned ultraviolet treatments - what it calls "light recipes" - to seeds and seedlings, and in a matter of seconds triggers changes in how those plants grow. No gene was edited. No chemical was added. The seed simply expresses more of the genetic potential it already carried.

The result, according to the company's field data, is a plant that yields more, resists disease better and tolerates stress more readily. Across more than 3,000 United States field plots since 2021, BioLumic reports light-treated corn averaging roughly 15% higher yields and soybeans around 12%. The technology has been tested across 12 crops, including rice.

The mechanism is a real branch of plant science called UV photomorphogenesis: plants sense ultraviolet light through dedicated photoreceptors and adjust their development in response. BioLumic's founder discovered the commercial angle almost by accident, while researching how extra UV would damage plants. Controlled doses, it turned out, did the opposite.
