The Story

Some Assembly Required

Open any big box - a grill, a treadmill, a trampoline - and you meet the same small dread: a folded sheet of paper covered in exploded diagrams and tiny arrows. BILT Incorporated built a company on the belief that this moment, the frustrating first hour with a new product, is not a nuisance to be tolerated. It is the most important moment a brand gets, and it deserves better than paper.

Founded in 2015 in Grapevine, Texas, BILT replaces printed manuals and static PDFs with what it calls Intelligent Instructions: voice- and text-guided, animated 3D walkthroughs delivered through a free mobile app. Instead of squinting at a flat diagram, a person rotates and zooms a 3D model of the exact product on the table in front of them, moving through each step - tools required, parts included, torque and orientation - at their own pace.

The idea is deceptively simple, and the results are measurable. In a paper-versus-digital demonstration, a Weber grill's assembly experience rating reportedly climbed from a 4 to an 8-plus. BILT says its instructions have cut product return rates by roughly half for some brands. Fewer returns, fewer support calls, higher product ratings - the math is what turns a consumer convenience into an enterprise business.

Today the platform reaches more than 10 million users in over 200 countries, hosts 10,000-plus SKUs from nearly 300 brands, and speaks 12 languages. And it has quietly moved beyond the living room floor - into factories, fiber-installation crews, and military maintenance bays - carrying the same core idea wherever physical things need to be built, installed, or repaired.

In December 2024, investors underlined the thesis with a $21 million Series B led by Austin's Silverton Partners, with Amex Ventures, Fifth Growth Fund, and Silicon Valley Bank joining. The next frontier: immersive, hands-free instructions on extended-reality headsets like the Apple Vision Pro.

What It Does & Who Uses It

From Grill Night to the Flight Line

BILT operates as a business-to-business platform with a consumer face. Manufacturers and retailers pay to author, host, and continuously update 3D instructions; the app that shoppers download is free. That structure lets BILT sit invisibly behind hundreds of products people already own.

CONSUMER

The Living Room

Weber grills, NordicTrack treadmills, Delta faucets, Chamberlain and Genie garage openers, Springfree trampolines, Solo Stove, KidKraft, and Home Depot private label - guided assembly people finish without calling support.

COMMERCIAL

The Job Site

Enterprise customers like Siemens and Clearfield use BILT to train technicians and speed installations - fiber crews and field teams who need clarity and fewer costly errors.

GOVERNMENT

The Maintenance Bay

The U.S. Air Force and military programs are testing BILT's 3D instructions for maintenance, cross-skilling, and readiness - guided work where mistakes carry real weight.

IMMERSIVE

The Headset

With partner 4D Pipeline, BILT is building spatial-computing guidance for Apple Vision Pro, aimed first at medical and military training that benefits from hands-free, in-context steps.

The Problem It Solves

The Economics of a Bad First Hour

A confusing setup is not just annoying - it is expensive. It generates support calls, one-star reviews, and returns, the single most destructive outcome for a durable-goods brand. BILT's argument to manufacturers is to move that money upstream, into the instructions themselves.

How BILT is different. The obvious alternatives are paper, PDFs, and YouTube tutorials. BILT's bet is against the linear video: instead of watching someone else's hands at their pace, you manipulate a 3D model at yours, viewing any step from any angle. Content updates in real time, so a revised part or a new SKU doesn't require reprinting anything.

Against enterprise work-instruction and AR-authoring platforms - the Tulips, Augmentirs, and PTC Vuforias of the world - BILT's edge is its consumer DNA. It started by earning millions of everyday users, then carried that polish and Net Promoter discipline into commercial and government work, rather than the other way around.
