The company that measures the real world

While much of advertising argued over clicks, Adsquare spent more than a decade on a harder question: did the ad actually change what someone did?

Adsquare is a location intelligence company, which is a plain way of describing an unusual bet. In 2012, three founders in Berlin - Tom Laband, Sebastian Doerfel and Fritz Richter - decided that the most valuable signal in advertising was not a cookie or a click but a place. Where people go, how often, and in what context turns out to be a durable proxy for who they are and what they might buy. The company built a mobile-first data exchange to make that signal usable, then wired it into the platforms marketers already run.

The result is infrastructure most people have never heard of and many have quietly used. Adsquare's data flows into demand-side and supply-side platforms, data management and customer data platforms, letting a buyer assemble an audience from location behaviour, app usage, demographics and offline sources - then activate it across mobile, online and, increasingly, the digital billboards on the street. The company frames the whole discipline as "the outcomes era," a deliberate contrast with the impressions-and-clicks accounting that dominated the last one.

Half the budget, and which half

The oldest complaint in marketing is that half the budget is wasted and no one knows which half. Digital promised to fix that with clicks, but a click is a poor stand-in for a purchase, and most purchases still happen in the physical world. Adsquare's answer is to close the gap between a digital impression and an offline action, so a campaign can be judged by whether people actually showed up.

What separates Adsquare from a generic data vendor is the emphasis on the last step of its loop. Plenty of companies will sell targeting; fewer stake their reputation on validation. Two of the company's stated values - "evidence over assertion" and "outcomes over outputs" - read less like wall decoration and more like a description of how a measurement business has to operate.

Differentiator

Privacy by design

Built on consent-based, deterministic signals from the start - not retrofitted after regulation arrived.

Differentiator

Omnichannel data

One audience layer fuses mobile, online and offline sources, then activates wherever buyers work.

Differentiator

Measurement first

An attribution dashboard ties exposure to real-world visits, closing the loop competitors often leave open.

The toolkit

Data Exchange

A mobile-first marketplace to build and activate custom audiences from location, app usage, demographics, affinities and interests - integrated with DSPs, SSPs, DMPs and CDPs.

Targeting

Geocontextual & Proximity

Reach consumers by real-time location context, points of interest and proximity to specific places and moments.

Targeting

Audience Targeting

Privacy-first, consent-based segments drawn from mobile, online and offline behaviour.

2023

Measurement & Attribution

Real-world measurement and an attribution dashboard connecting ad exposure to offline outcomes such as store visits.

2023 / DOOH

DOOH Location Suite

Audience and SDK-derived location data for planning and programmatic delivery of digital out-of-home, via the Vistar Media partnership.

Model

B2B Data & SaaS

Licensing audience and location data plus platform access - distributed through integrations, not by selling media directly.

Lean by design

Adsquare scaled internationally on modest capital - roughly $9.5M in total across three rounds - an unusually efficient path for adtech.

Seed · 2013
$1.4M
Series A · 2014
$4.3M
Series B · 2017
$3.85M

Backers over time included Target Partners, bmp Ventures and Berlin Ventures. The company's revenue is estimated around $13M annually. The takeaway is less the dollar figures than the discipline: when you cannot outspend, you out-focus - and Adsquare focused on the one thing hardest to fake, measurement.

The plumbing of location targeting

Adsquare sits in the location-intelligence and audience-data layer of the advertising stack, alongside names such as Near/Azira, Foursquare, Cuebiq and Gravy Analytics. It is not a media owner and not a demand-side platform; it is the data and measurement partner those platforms plug into. That position - upstream of the buy, downstream of the behaviour - is why so many location-based ads in Europe pass through infrastructure like Adsquare's without ever showing its name.

The partnership with Vistar Media brings together the shared vision of two powerhouses in the AdTech landscape.
