A startup can spend months trying to get a corporate buyer to answer an email. 4YFN’s proposition is more physical: bring the startup to the place where the corporate world is already gathering. In Barcelona, that place is MWC. A founder still needs a persuasive product, a working demonstration and something useful to say. But the journey to an introduction can become a walk through an exhibition venue.
That is the business behind Four Years From Now, the GSMA’s startup event and business platform. It sells participation in a meeting place: exhibition space, event access, sponsorship opportunities and programmes that connect entrepreneurs with investors, established companies and public institutions. Its name invites a prediction. Its immediate job is considerably less mystical: help the right people find one another.
The 2026 results show the scale of the proposition. Organisers reported more than 1,000 startups and exhibitors, over 260 startup pitches and more than 700 curated meetings. More than 60 percent of those meetings paired startups with investors. The combined MWC and 4YFN audience numbered 105,000. That last figure describes the two events together, an essential distinction when assessing what one startup’s stand might deliver.
For a young business, the useful question is whether the people it needs are within reach. For 4YFN, the commercial challenge is to make that reach worth paying for again. A room full of ambition is easy to advertise. A relevant introduction is the product that has to survive the flight home.

02The move that changed the proposition
4YFN began as a Mobile World Capital Barcelona initiative, with its first event in 2014. Business directories date its founding to 2013. The institutional origin matters: this was an attempt to connect a city’s emerging technology businesses with an established international industry gathering. It arrived with a powerful neighbour and a local organisation interested in building the surrounding startup economy.
Early attendance grew quickly. Mobile World Capital’s 2019 annual report records 2,200 attendees in 2014, 8,000 in 2015 and 23,000 in 2019. Those are historical 4YFN figures, unlike today’s combined MWC totals. The same report says GSMA took full responsibility for managing the Barcelona and international editions from 2019, while Mobile World Capital retained its own activities and exhibition presence.
Expansion had already taken the brand abroad. Shanghai hosted its first edition in 2016, and a San Francisco edition was announced in 2017. The idea travelled alongside the congress network: put emerging companies near established technology businesses, then give the encounters enough structure to become useful.
In 2020, the event’s dependence on physical gathering became painfully clear. MWC and 4YFN were cancelled amid coronavirus concerns. The failure was in the ability to convene, a basic dependency of the business. It also exposed the limits of any plan built around one week on the calendar.
That July, GSMA announced that 4YFN would move from Fira Montjuïc to Fira Gran Via for 2021. Its stated rationale was greater interaction between attendees and exhibitors. The change put startups inside MWC’s venue. No shuttle journey was needed to explain the strategy: shorten the distance between people inventing something and people who might buy, finance or distribute it.

03The customer has several different badges
4YFN serves several markets at once. Startups want prospects, publicity and introductions to capital. Investors want companies worth investigating. Corporations want technologies and teams that address problems they already have. Public agencies want international exposure for businesses from their region. Each group makes the event more useful to the others, provided the organiser can match their intentions.
The pavilion business makes this especially visible. The 2026 list included Barcelona Activa, ACCIÓ, ICEX, JETRO, Deutsche Telekom and several universities. Delegations give participating companies a shared presence and give the sponsoring institution a way to present its local technology economy abroad. A visitor looking for one company can discover several neighbours along the way.
The investor offering adds a sorting mechanism. 4YFN’s partnership with Dealroom lets investors filter companies and arrange meetings in advance. Workshops, curated matchmaking and an Investors Zone provide different settings for different conversations. Choosing by sector, stage and relevance is more useful than leaving every introduction to the queue for coffee.
This is where the organiser’s expertise sits: convening, selecting, programming and arranging access. The practical offering includes mentoring and exposure to funding opportunities, but a pass is no substitute for an accelerator’s sustained work with a company. The founder still owns the product, the pitch and the follow-up.

04A €399 ticket is only the first line of the budget
The published 2026 Attendee Pass was €399 including VAT. It included four days at 4YFN and access to the MWC exhibition on Wednesday and Thursday. The Investor Pass was €1,099 including VAT, with four-day access to both exhibitions and additional investor spaces and activities. Those prices describe that edition’s published offering, rather than a promise about future tickets.
The difference matters to anyone planning meetings across the venue. A corporate contact available on Monday is of limited use if the chosen pass grants access to their exhibition only later in the week. Registration also had to be completed online, with identification validated before arrival. The administrative details belong in the same plan as the pitch.
An exhibitor’s actual budget also includes its space or package, travel, accommodation, preparation and staff time. A sensible calculation divides the full trip cost by qualified follow-ups, then checks how many become pilots, customers or serious investment discussions. Counting scanned badges alone rewards the busiest person at the stand, who may have met nobody able to make a decision.
Passes, exhibition packages and sponsorship form the visible commercial model. Sponsors buy association and presence; exhibitors buy a place to demonstrate; attendees buy access. The arrangement works when each side helps attract another. It becomes less attractive to a founder whose target customers are absent, whose product is difficult to demonstrate, or whose team cannot handle the conversations after the show.
Then track which follow-ups become pilots, customers or substantive investment discussions.
05The trophy comes with a useful second act
The awards turn startup discovery into a competition people can follow. In 2026, a remote selection process produced 20 semifinalists across five categories, followed by five finalists and one overall winner. The programme offered a €20,000 cash prize. The funnel gives investors and journalists a manageable shortlist in an otherwise crowded exhibition.
Biorce won the overall award on March 4, 2026. The Spanish health technology company applies AI to clinical research. Fellow finalists included AI security company NeuralTrust, financial automation business Dost, scrap-industry platform Doctor Scrap and accessibility company ConnectHear. The range is a useful corrective to the assumption that an event beside MWC is concerned only with phones.
GSMA Foundry provides a continuation of that exposure. The 2026 winner and finalists received opportunities to showcase their work through its platform. This gives the competition a life after the stage lights: a company can become easier to explain, reference and discover within the wider industry network.
NeuralTrust’s account supplies a more concrete description of the benefit. In an organiser-published interview, the company reported focused conversations with enterprises moving AI into deployment, follow-on interviews and potential collaborations. Its representative put it simply: “The biggest value was access.” These are reported outcomes from a participant, rather than an audited measure of contracts won.
The lesson is practical. Arrive with a problem that the audience recognises, then use the meeting to agree a specific next step. An award can make the introduction easier. The subsequent work still requires a buyer with a need, an internal sponsor and a reason to keep talking once Barcelona is over.

06AI gets the billing. Relevance does the work.
4YFN’s 2025 theme was AI XL; in 2026 it was Infinite AI. The earlier edition’s analysis said 60 percent of participating startups used AI in their business models, with 30 percent putting it at the centre of their proposition. By 2026, the organiser’s recap emphasised infrastructure, trust and enterprise deployment. Those topics concern implementation as much as invention.
The change in emphasis is visible in NeuralTrust’s experience: enterprise conversations moved toward safe deployment. That suggests a useful test for any exhibitor following the theme. Explain the operating problem before explaining the technology. A procurement team needs to understand the risk, cost or workload a product changes; a fashionable label cannot do that work.
Slush and Web Summit compete for similar founder attention and travel budgets. Slush stresses a curated concentration of startups and investors. Web Summit offers its own startup programme, pitching, mentoring and investor access. 4YFN’s distinctive argument is the shared setting with MWC and its connectivity industry audience. Which is preferable depends on who a company needs to meet.
For an enterprise AI company, connected-device business or technology supplier seeking an industry partner, that adjacency can make commercial sense. A founder looking mainly for local consumer feedback should demand a different justification. The most useful event is the one that assembles the relevant people at the right stage of the business.
07Four days, then the real calendar begins
The next Barcelona edition is scheduled for March 1-4, 2027. The new awards programme advertises exhibition support and cash prizes for shortlisted companies, with €20,000 for the overall winner. Its rules specify that the cash awards are non-cumulative. The continued presence of Shanghai and Doha in 4YFN’s plans also reflects its ambition to serve a startup community across markets.
A founder can copy the underlying method without organising a congress. Identify an existing concentration of customers, learn what they need, and arrange relevant meetings before turning up. Use a demonstration to earn a next step. Reserve time afterward to deliver whatever was promised. This is our reading of the model, and it is deliberately less glamorous than winning a pitch competition.
4YFN’s enduring wager is that proximity can help a small company enter a much larger conversation. The event can provide the setting, the shortlist and the appointment. What makes the trip worthwhile is often a quieter scene: two people reopening the discussion a week later, with a real problem on the table.
