A startup job listing contains a peculiar negotiation. The employer wants enthusiasm before revealing too much. The candidate wants information before becoming enthusiastic. Somewhere between “competitive compensation” and “wear many hats,” two strangers are expected to discover whether they should spend their working lives together. Wellfound begins with an unusually sensible intervention: put salary and equity where people can see them.
That choice explains more about the company than its AI vocabulary does. Formerly AngelList Talent, Wellfound is a marketplace for startup jobs and a recruiting platform for the companies offering them. Its bet is that choosing a smaller, more purposeful audience can make a hiring conversation more useful.
- Job seekers browse startup roles and compare compensation before applying.
- Employers can post jobs and manage applicants for free.
- Reach automates sourcing; Autopilot adds a dedicated human recruiter.
First the money. Then the people.
The original logic was almost embarrassingly straightforward. A founder raises capital. Next, that founder needs colleagues. AngelList already connected startups with investors, so hiring was an adjacent problem with an audience attached. An email-based matching effort developed into a marketplace where candidates could speak directly with the people building the company.
By the November 2022 rebrand announcement, AngelList Talent said it had helped 150,000 startups and more than eight million candidates connect. Those were cumulative connection figures, not a census of employers simultaneously hiring. Today, Wellfound reports more than 27,000 hiring companies and 100,000 hires. The numbers describe different things; they should not be arranged into a convenient growth chart.
Company-reported marketplace figures. Connections, hires and active employers are different measures.
The shared AngelList identity eventually became troublesome. Investors and recruiters had increasingly different needs. Keeping Talent and Venture under related names preserved the association, but also preserved the confusion. The November 2022 announcement gave Talent the Wellfound name; in March 2023, the website moved from angel.co to wellfound.com.
“People are still confused.”Amit Matani, recalling the old shared branding in a 2024 interview
The lesson is pleasantly unromantic. A recognizable name can become an explanation you must give at every meeting. Wellfound traded some inherited recognition for a clearer account of what it sold.

A smaller audience with a better reason to reply
Wellfound’s distinction is candidate intent. People create profiles because they want to hear about startup work. A broad professional network may contain more people, but finding someone with the right skills is only half the task. That person must also be willing to join the kind of company doing the asking.
For candidates, the marketplace offers engineering, design, product, marketing and other startup roles, including remote opportunities. Company profiles add context to the listing. Salary and equity information help applicants reject unsuitable opportunities early, which is a service to both parties. A remote label still requires reading the geography and authorization details.
The audience is useful to employers beyond their first hire. Wellfound’s published customer stories include Dosu, Adonis, Branch and Affinity. In its Branch account, the company reports 12 hires across machine learning, engineering and design. These are selected customer experiences, not evidence that every listing produces the same result.
Its position sits between broad discovery services such as LinkedIn or Indeed, startup-specific boards such as Y Combinator’s Work at a Startup, and sourcing software. A founder choosing among them is choosing an audience and a workflow. More names are welcome only if someone has time to investigate them.
Three prices for three amounts of work
Wellfound Jobs supplies the front door: unlimited free listings, applicants and a built-in applicant tracking system. Employers build a company profile, describe the role and organize responses. Optional promoted jobs start at $200 per listing. Distribution is the purchase; the basic ability to advertise is free.
Reach moves from waiting for applicants to finding candidates. Employers describe the role, and AI agents pursue searches and personalized outreach. Agents can test different angles for the same opening. Startup-stage history and inferred skills add context, although an inference still needs checking during an interview.

Reach searches Wellfound’s ten-million-plus opted-in pool alongside more than 500 million enriched external profiles. Those are distinct populations. Wellfound reports an internally measured 50 percent higher reply rate from opted-in candidates than from external cold outreach using the same tooling. That measures replies, not job offers or successful hires.
The current pricing page lists Reach Starter at $135 per seat monthly and Growth at $199, with different contact-reveal allowances. Autopilot costs $500 monthly per open role plus a 10 percent placement fee upon hiring. A dedicated recruiter handles sourcing, outreach and scheduling, promising a weekly flow of interested candidates. Interviewing and the final decision remain with the employer.
The free tool you are allowed to outgrow
Wellfound also integrates with systems including Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workable. Jobs can travel outward to the marketplace while applicants travel back into an employer’s ATS. This gives a growing company a way to keep the audience while changing the machinery behind it.
There is a useful boundary here. Wellfound’s managed service says its strongest roles are engineering, technical product and growth. A hospital hiring clinical staff or a manufacturer filling plant shifts has different requirements. Even inside technology, unclear compensation, a vague role or slow replies will give a sourcing tool very little to repair.
A founder can copy the underlying discipline immediately: state the salary range, explain the actual work, distinguish essential skills from wishes, and respond while interest is alive. A candidate can use the same information to narrow the search before surrendering an afternoon to applications. Wellfound’s most practical idea is that both sides deserve enough information to choose.
