The Builder Behind the Longevity Lab
Wei-Wu He has spent three decades at the point where biology becomes a business. He started at the lab bench, moved into the earliest days of the genomics industry, and has been building and backing biotech companies ever since. Today he chairs and leads Human Longevity, Inc., a company built on a simple idea: it is better to see disease coming than to treat it once it arrives.
His route into science ran through molecular biology. He earned a Ph.D. in the field at Baylor College of Medicine, then trained as a research fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Mayo Clinic - two of the most demanding research environments in American medicine. That grounding in bench science never fully left him. He would go on to author more than 90 academic papers and to be named as a co-inventor on more than 30 patents, a record that keeps him closer to the actual work of discovery than most executives ever get.
What set his career on a different track was a second decision: to learn the language of business. He went to the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania for an MBA. The combination is unusual. Plenty of scientists start companies and pick up the commercial side as they go; far fewer deliberately train for it. That dual fluency - the science and the balance sheet - became the through-line of everything that followed.
The genomics years
He was among the first handful of scientists at Human Genome Sciences, one of the companies that defined the commercial genomics boom of the 1990s. Being early at a company like that means doing a bit of everything: the research, the systems, the arguments about where the field is going. It was formative. The experience of turning raw genetic information into something useful would shape the rest of his career.
From there he moved into building. He led OriGene Technologies as chief executive and remains chairman of its board. OriGene became a cornerstone supplier of research tools, known for assembling one of the largest commercial collections of full-length human cDNAs - the kind of infrastructure that other laboratories quietly depend on. It is not glamorous work. It is the plumbing of biomedical research, and it matters enormously.

The investor's long game
In 2000 he founded Emerging Technology Partners, a life-sciences venture fund, and has served as its General Partner ever since. Through that fund and his own activity, he has been involved in the founding or funding of dozens of biotechnology companies across genomics, precision medicine and adjacent fields. Some were acquired by much larger firms. The pattern is consistent: he tends to back the underlying science and the founders before a category becomes fashionable, then stays involved as it matures.
That patience is the quiet signature of his approach. Venture capital in life sciences often chases the exit. He has behaved more like someone building an industry than flipping a portfolio - which is exactly what you would expect from a person who has also been the scientist and the operator in the room.
Human Longevity
Since July 2019 he has led Human Longevity, Inc., the precision-health company headquartered in South San Francisco. Its approach brings together three streams of data that used to live in separate silos: whole-genome sequencing, advanced imaging, and detailed blood and metabolic analysis. Read together, they build an unusually complete picture of a person's biology and the risks that picture implies - well before symptoms appear.
The philosophy behind it is preventive rather than reactive. Most of modern medicine is organized around treating problems once they present. Human Longevity's premise is that a great deal of that harm is foreseeable if you look at enough of the right data early enough. It is a hard thing to build a business on, because prevention is invisible by nature - nobody sends a thank-you note for the crisis that never happened. Building a company on that logic takes conviction.
For He, it is a natural destination. The genomics work taught him how to turn genetic data into meaning. OriGene taught him how to build the tools an industry runs on. The venture fund taught him how to spot which ideas become companies. Human Longevity asks all three questions at once, in service of a goal he has circled for years: helping people stay healthier for longer, guided by data rather than guesswork.
The four-in-one career
It is tempting to describe him by a single title, but none quite fits. He is a scientist who never stopped inventing, an operator who has run companies, and an investor who has funded dozens more - often holding several of those roles at the same time. That combination is rare, and it is the reason his name shows up across so many corners of the biotech world, from research reagents to precision diagnostics to early-stage venture.
He continues to appear on the conference circuit where the future of the field gets argued out, including a listed speaking slot at the 2026 Precision Medicine World Conference in Silicon Valley.
