The Savings Group: Same car. Different math.

AUTOPAY, RateGenius, and Tresl look like three ways to shop for a car loan. Behind them sits one company betting that the hard part of auto finance starts after you find a rate.

A car loan has an odd habit of becoming invisible. You notice the car every morning. You notice the payment every month. The agreement connecting them can sit untouched for years. The Savings Group has built its business around reopening that agreement: same vehicle, another chance to find financing that fits.

THE QUICK READ / 01
  • Three brands, one parent: AUTOPAY, RateGenius, and Tresl.
  • Two sides of the deal: drivers need financing; lenders need suitable borrowers.
  • The number to watch: total borrowing cost, alongside the monthly payment.

The company occupies the space between a bank’s lending rules and a driver’s financial circumstances. Its consumer brands help with purchases, refinancing, lease buyouts, and protection products. Its other customers are financial institutions that want auto loans without building the entire customer-acquisition and processing operation themselves.

Three doors into the same house

Consider the names. AUTOPAY sounds like convenience. RateGenius sounds like a search for a better number. Tresl now puts lease ownership at the center of its pitch. These are different entrances to the same corporate family, with overlapping services. A borrower browsing all three is visiting related businesses.

That family was assembled. In July 2021, RateGenius and AUTOPAY completed an all-stock merger of equals, creating The Savings Group. AUTOPAY co-founders Jeff Hutcheson and Seth Meyer became co-CEOs. RateGenius’s previous chief executive, Christopher Speltz, became executive chairman. The announcement described more than 550 employees and a network exceeding 180 lenders.

Speltz explained the timing through changing consumer behavior: digital lending was gaining acceptance, and auto finance was moving beyond the dealership. Read that as the strategic bet. A driver could shop for financing somewhere other than the place selling the vehicle.

“More options increase a consumer’s confidence in making the right decision when picking the best loan terms.”

In April 2022, TSG acquired Tresl, bringing experience in off-lease and off-fleet purchases as well as refinancing. Tresl had started in 2007; RateGenius dated to 1999. The new parent inherited businesses with histories, relationships, and operating knowledge. By the acquisition announcement, the group reported more than 200 lenders across all 50 states.

The hood opens. So can the financing conversation. Company website imagery puts the vehicle front and center. The transaction happens behind the scenes.

The useful work comes after the click

A comparison screen is easy to understand. The process behind it deserves equal attention. AUTOPAY describes an application, confirmation of borrower and vehicle details, and electronic signing. Tresl’s lease-buyout service adds an advisor who helps confirm the payoff, followed by paperwork and title transfer. The product includes getting the transaction finished.

The matching itself is selective. TSG’s June 2026 privacy policy says applicant information is not sent to every lender. Instead, the borrower’s profile and needs are compared with lenders’ target profiles, with information sent to matching institutions first. A network of 200-plus institutions does not mean 200 offers landing in an inbox.

This distinction helps explain the company’s expertise. It must understand credit applications, lender preferences, vehicle information, and the administrative steps connecting approval to funding. A fast application is useful. An unfinished payoff or title transfer still leaves work for somebody.

The bank is shopping, too

On its lender page, TSG offers institutions control over guidelines, geography, underwriting, and funding. TSG handles the operational burden and advertises completed title transfer into the lender’s name. The economic proposition is direct: lenders pay for loans they fund, with no upfront cost.

Distribution has its own arrangement. Publishers, marketplaces, and recommendation businesses can refer prospective borrowers through an affiliate program. They earn commissions when referrals convert. TSG advertises conversion tracking and several ways to connect to its platform. This business needs both a supply of applicants and institutions willing to finance them.

The Allied Solutions partnership shows how those pieces meet. A joint September 2023 article describes consumer marketing, borrower document uploads, and refinance programs tailored to an institution’s funding budget and risk appetite. It also names integrations with MeridianLink and Origence. Allied reported that TSG facilitated more than $2.8 billion in financing transactions during 2022. That measures loan activity; it is not company revenue.

A smaller payment has a second number

For drivers, price requires a longer conversation than the headline rate. AUTOPAY says it charges no application fee. The final loan still needs examination: APR, term, financed fees, and any selected protection products. TSG’s terms do not promise an approval or a particular rate.

There is also a mathematical catch. Extending repayment can reduce the monthly bill while increasing total interest. The illustration below holds the balance and rate steady so only time changes. It is a calculation, not a TSG offer. The extra breathing room has a price.

ONE BALANCE. TWO TIMELINES.

$20,000 at 8% interest

$488monthly payment
$3,436total interest

Illustrative fixed-rate amortization, no fees. Rounded amounts; longer term means more interest at the same rate.

Eligibility narrows the audience further. Income, credit, debt obligations, loan-to-value, and vehicle age or mileage can affect the available terms. A large marketplace cannot remove those constraints. Nor does shared ownership make its three brands a substitute for checking an independent alternative such as Caribou or a direct credit-union offer.

Copy the follow-through

TSG’s own recruiting offers a useful glimpse behind the interface. A public loan-specialist posting describes commission-based selling, optional protection products, and more than 60 outbound calls daily. Its careers page promotes learning and internal advancement. Digital delivery here includes people managing applications and conversations.

The transferable idea is practical: sell a measurable outcome, then take responsibility for the tedious steps required to deliver it. For TSG, lender matching leads into documents, payoffs, and titles. For the borrower, the final question stays wonderfully concrete: what will this agreement cost, and when will the car finally be paid for?
