(3)Janet Conning Makes the Business Case for Better Bread
At Bäckerhaus Veit, Janet Conning works where old-world baking meets the modern deli case. Her public comments reveal a marketer focused on the small product decisions - from slice size to half-loaf formats - that turn craft into a useful customer proposition.
The Bread Company That Froze Time - and Sold Craft at Industrial Scale
Bäckerhaus Veit turned a lopsided delivery week into a continental bakery business. Its useful trick was not a secret recipe - it was giving restaurants and grocers the smell of a bake shop without asking them to run one.
Firebrand Artisan Breads
Firebrand Artisan Breads is an Oakland-founded, Alameda-based wood-fired bakery that describes itself as a jobs program that happens to sell bread. Founded in 2008 by Matt Kreutz, it wholesales artisan breads and pastries to hundreds of Bay Area retailers - including Whole Foods - and runs a direct retail cafe. Its defining feature is an Open Hiring model that prioritizes people with high barriers to employment (formerly incarcerated, formerly homeless), paired with a perpetual purpose trust that locks the mission in permanently and shares profits with workers.
