Powerhouse AI is betting the barcode gun has counted its last box

A Y Combinator startup points an ordinary phone camera at a warehouse and lets software do the counting - reading labels, tallying pallets, and digitizing the paperwork nobody wants to type.

Walk onto any receiving dock and you will find the same ritual. A worker holds a barcode scanner, points it at a label, waits for the beep, writes down a number, and moves to the next box. It is slow, it is repetitive, and it is exactly where a warehouse quietly loses money - one miscount at a time. Powerhouse AI looked at that ritual and asked a plain question: the camera in your pocket already sees the boxes, so why not let it count them?

That is the whole premise of the company, and it is deliberately unglamorous. Powerhouse AI is an AI vision "copilot" for warehouse operators. Instead of installing robots or re-labeling an entire facility, it runs on the phones and tablets people already carry. Point the camera at a pallet and its software tallies the boxes. Aim it at a wall of labels and it reads several at once. Hand it a crumpled delivery document and it pulls out the data without anyone typing a line. The company's own shorthand for the mission is a small pun: turn your warehouse into a powerhouse.

The problem hiding in plain sight

Warehousing runs on thin margins and thinner patience. Three tasks repeat millions of times a day across the industry - receiving inventory in, counting what is on the shelf, and shipping orders out. Each repetition is a chance to be wrong. A pallet counted as 48 when it holds 47. A shipment logged against the wrong SKU. A document typed in at the end of a long shift with a transposed digit. None of these are dramatic on their own. Added up across a year, they are the difference between a profitable operation and a leaky one.

Traditional automation does address this - but usually by asking the warehouse to change everything. New racking, robotic arms, autonomous drones, fresh labels on every item, and a capital budget most third-party logistics providers simply do not have. From robot eyes to worker eyes

The idea has a specific origin. Co-founder and CEO Kushal Pillay spent his earlier career in robotics and computer vision, building models that helped robots predict how humans move so they could plan safer routes, and models that flagged threats and vandalism. Then he inverted the premise. Rather than teaching robots to work around people, he decided to give people the robot's eyes - what he calls delivering "robot-grade technology" straight to the warehouse worker, at a fraction of the cost of the robot.

Pillay met his co-founder, Ivo Verhaegh, through Entrepreneur First, the talent investor that pairs would-be founders who arrive without a team or an idea. The program accepts a small slice of applicants and pushes them to commit to each other quickly. The two matched, settled on warehouses, and in 2021 started building. By early 2022 they had joined Y Combinator's Winter batch and raised seed funding alongside Entrepreneur First.

The product suite sits under one workflow platform, Power Flow, which digitizes the three core warehouse motions and adds a manager's "cockpit" for oversight. The pieces underneath handle the specific jobs.

How it is different

The competitive field splits into two camps. One is hardware-heavy: drone-based inventory scanners like Gather AI, or full robotic systems that fly or roll through the aisles. The other is software-heavy: warehouse management platforms such as Deposco, Syncron and Generix that organize data but still rely on someone scanning it in. Powerhouse AI slots between them. It is software, but it is software that does the physical seeing - counting and reading - which the WMS platforms leave to a human with a scanner gun.

The practical differences are concrete: scan many labels in one pass instead of one beep at a time; extract information that is not printed on the label; read from five to ten feet away; and skip re-labeling entirely. For a 3PL weighing a seven-figure robotics install against a subscription that runs on existing devices, the math is easy to start.

Who is using it

Powerhouse AI is early-stage and small - reported headcount sits in the low single digits to a handful. But the names it works with are not small. Its customer and reference list includes some of the largest operators in global logistics.

The business model matches the customer: B2B SaaS, sold on subscription to logistics providers, 3PLs and manufacturers. The pitch is not a moonshot but a payback calculation - faster throughput and fewer errors, using hardware the customer already owns. In 2025 the company also earned a spot on ECR Community's Top 30 list of e-commerce loss-prevention innovations, a nod to the same theme: the value is in the errors it prevents.

Where it fits

Warehouse automation is a crowded, well-funded market, and Powerhouse AI is not trying to out-spend the drone fleets. Its wager is on the least glamorous, most universal problem in the building - counting correctly - and on the cheapest tool that can solve it. Operating across two very different logistics worlds, Singapore and Brooklyn, the team is small enough to still answer the phone and specific enough to know exactly which task it is replacing. Whether that grows into a category leader is unsettled. What is clear is the shape of the bet: the best automation might be the kind that fits the warehouse you already have.
