Patricia Morschel Built a Marketing Career One Repeatable Process at a Time

She started at DuPont Performance Coatings as a chemist in Brazil. Thirty years later, she became Axalta's CMO, carrying shop-floor constraints and a global refinish career into company-wide marketing.

A fresh coat of automotive paint can look effortless. The surface is smooth, the color lands where the eye expects it, and the repaired panel rejoins the rest of the car without announcing what happened. Behind that quiet result sits a busy system: measurement, formula retrieval, inventory, mixing, application, drying, quality control and, when something goes wrong, expensive rework. Patricia Morschel has spent three decades learning that system from the inside.

She entered it in 1995 as a chemist at DuPont Performance Coatings in Brazil. The job placed her near the material itself, where a coating is less a color than a controlled chemical performance. It must adhere, protect, endure and appear consistent under changing light. Morschel moved through technical assignments in industrial coatings before joining the refinish business in 2001. Product and marketing management followed. Then came regional and global leadership. In January 2025, Axalta promoted her to Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

The promotion created a neat corporate headline. The more revealing story is the path underneath it. Morschel did not arrive in marketing from the world of slogans. She arrived through formulation, technical work and the daily economics of body shops. By the time Axalta asked her to build a marketing center of excellence across the company, she had already learned how a glossy promise meets a dusty, time-pressed work floor.

Chapter one

Chemistry is a useful first language

Morschel studied chemical engineering at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Later, she earned an MBA from the Wharton School and completed Kellogg's Chief Marketing Officer Program. The sequence matters. Engineering supplied a way to break a complicated outcome into variables. Business education widened the field to customers, capital and organizations. Marketing training added another translation layer.

Industrial products punish vague language. A coating either performs under the stated conditions or it does not. A repair either matches or comes back. A process either saves time or merely shifts work to somebody else. For a marketer, that reality can be clarifying. The useful story is anchored to an observable change in the customer's day.

Morschel's public comments tend to begin there. When she discusses the pressures on refinish shops, she points to productivity, energy consumption, carbon footprint and a shortage of skilled labor. These subjects sound separate until viewed as one workflow. A manual task consumes technician time. Variation can create rework. Rework consumes more material and booth energy. A shortage of experienced workers makes every avoidable step more costly.

Chapter two

A body shop does not buy software. It buys back a Tuesday.

At Automechanika Frankfurt in 2024, Morschel discussed three Axalta tools as pieces of a connected system. Irus Scan reads color. Irus Mix automates mixing. Nimbus is a cloud platform designed to connect information and tools used by refinish customers. None is difficult to describe alone. The stronger commercial argument appears when they pass work to one another.

A connected system can make a formula easier to retrieve, a mix easier to reproduce and usage easier to understand. The technician spends less time on a repeatable manual sequence. The shop gains data about what it consumes and orders. Management gets a clearer view of where time and material go. The value accumulates in minutes, avoided errors and fewer interruptions.

A faster handoff. Less variation. Better use of trained labor. Fewer reasons to repeat a job.

This is where Morschel's long apprenticeship becomes useful. A generalist can describe the software. A chemist can explain the material. An operator can see the delay between them. Her career has crossed all three views.

In early 2025, she said Axalta wanted to move quickly toward equipping 80 percent of end users with Irus Mix and Nimbus while taking the technologies into additional markets. The figure is an adoption goal, not a victory lap. It implies that launch is only the beginning. Hardware must fit a physical space. Software must fit an existing habit. Training must turn a capability into a routine.

The internal candidate with an external brief

When Axalta elevated Morschel in January 2025, the CMO role was new at the company-wide level. Her assignment included establishing a marketing center of excellence and strengthening marketing and communications. It was an external-facing brief handed to a deeply internal candidate.

There is a useful tension in that choice. Long tenure can preserve institutional habits that need changing. It can also supply the pattern recognition needed to change them without losing what works. Morschel had seen the coatings business before Axalta existed as an independent public company. She had moved from industrial coatings into refinish, from technical assignments into product and marketing management, and from regional work into global commercial operations.

She also carried geographic range. A native of Brazil, she built a career that reached global customers from a base in the United States. Her public profile lists Portuguese and English fluency. Industrial marketing often demands this kind of translation even when everyone is speaking the same language. A body-shop owner, a coatings scientist, a software team, a distributor and a corporate communications group can use the same word while meaning different things.

A center of excellence can become a stack of templates. The harder version creates shared judgment. Which customer problem deserves a campaign? Which technical claim needs evidence? Which local difference matters? Which product names should appear together because the customer experiences them as a system? Morschel's operating history gives those questions a practical reference point.

Her 2017 appearance accepting a global market leadership award for Axalta's refinish business offers a small preview. The moment was ceremonial, but the job behind it was concrete: portfolio, distribution, customer value and execution across a fragmented repair market. By 2024, she was speaking about global launch patterns, noting that established markets and growing regions did not look the same, even when workshops increasingly shared similar problems.

That observation is the marketer's balancing act. Globalize the problem without flattening the customer. A skills shortage may appear in several regions. The shop size, distribution model, vehicle mix and pace of technology adoption can still vary. A useful global system leaves room for local reality.

The finish is the evidence

Morschel's career does not offer a flashy founder myth. It offers something more transferable for people working inside mature companies: an example of expertise widening over time. She did not abandon chemistry when she entered marketing. She carried its discipline forward. She did not leave the customer workflow behind when she moved into the executive committee. That workflow became the proof behind the message.

The lesson is especially relevant in technical B2B markets. Products rarely live alone. A coating sits inside a preparation process, an application system, a labor model, an energy bill and a deadline. Marketing earns trust when it can connect those elements without turning complexity into fog.

A 2024 collaboration between Axalta and 3M made that systems view tangible. The companies developed five brand-agnostic training modules for refinish technicians and shops, with versions planned in seven languages. The first lessons focused on productivity, efficiency and process quality. The format mattered as much as the topic: technical knowledge packaged into steps that a working shop could use. Training, in this frame, is not an accessory after the sale. It is part of whether the promised outcome can be repeated by more people in more places.

A repaired panel leaves the shop with no footnote explaining the tools behind it. If the work succeeds, the technology disappears into a consistent surface. Morschel's job is to make the hidden system legible before that happens: to show why measurement, automation, software, chemistry and training belong in the same customer story.

That may be the cleanest expression of her chemist-to-CMO path. Start with what must be true. Study the variables. Respect the person doing the work. Then build a process that can produce the result again.
