Moxie gives the solo medspa a bigger back office

A good injector can still be a bewildered business owner. Moxie bundles software, coaching and collective buying power to help independent aesthetic practices keep their independence.

The trouble began before the first patient arrived. In January 2022, a friend of Moxie’s future founders tried to open a medspa and encountered red tape and punishing expenses. Clinical competence was one thing. Finding the people, paperwork and systems required to turn it into a business was quite another. There was a door marked independence. Getting through it appeared to require an entire administrative department.

The story in three moves
  • Moxie combines medspa software with people who help run the business.
  • Independent practices gain preferred supply pricing and operational support.
  • Its newer tools address the complications of growing beyond one provider.

Dan Friedman, Sam Gerstenzang and Emma Gilsanz went looking. According to Moxie’s account, they interviewed and shadowed more than 50 medspas that February. By April, they had helped their friend launch and started the company. The sequence matters: watch the work, identify the friction, then build something. An entrepreneur’s first useful product can be a very good question.

The founders were outsiders. They paid attention.

Gerstenzang later admitted, “We didn’t know much about medspas.” In a 2024 essay, he challenged the familiar instruction to build for yourself. Moxie’s interest in helping entrepreneurs developed through the search, he wrote. This is a less theatrical origin than a lifelong calling, and rather more useful to somebody wondering whether they must personally suffer a problem before they can solve it.

What the founders found was a mismatch. Aesthetic practitioners knew their clinical work; opening a practice demanded a different collection of skills. Moxie’s launch service now includes a coach, medical director matching, consent and protocol templates, supplier-account guidance and marketing support. The customer is the practice owner: nurses, nurse practitioners, physician associates and doctors building an independent business.

A calendar that understands numbing cream

Moxie Suite arrived in October 2022. It brings booking, records, charting, payments and communications together. Its inventory tools track units and lots. Its scheduling tools account for numbing time and for treatments taking different amounts of time with different providers. These are small details with large consequences. A calendar sees an appointment. An operator sees the room, the device, the clinician and the minutes between them.

The dashboard gets the desk job. Moxie Suite brings the appointment book and the paperwork into the same room.

Patient retention has its own machinery: automated reminders, memberships, packages and communications. Marketing services cover the work of attracting patients, while bookkeeping and financial tools help interpret what happens after checkout. The bundle’s appeal is practical. Every disconnected system creates another place where a busy owner must remember to look.

This puts Moxie between conventional practice software and a service business. An owner could assemble separate booking, marketing, bookkeeping and compliance providers. Moxie sells their coordination, plus operator coaching. The competing proposition is often a collection of vendors rather than a single rival. Its customers keep their brands; the shared infrastructure sits behind them.

The purchasing department you could not hire

In September 2023, Moxie launched Moxie Supplies. Preferred purchasing terms address an awkward feature of independence: being small can make the same supplies more expensive. Moxie advertises savings of up to 55% on injectables, devices and supplies. That is a ceiling across an offering, not a discount to assume on every order. The idea is collective scale without collective ownership.

The economics deserve the same attention as the software. Moxie’s published service page describes performance-based pricing with no fixed monthly fees for that offering. Payroll has a separate, unusually concrete price: $30 per month plus $5 per employee. Five employees would therefore cost $55 monthly for payroll. That arithmetic says nothing about the total partnership bill, which depends on the package and agreement.

Five employees → $55/month for payroll

A practice evaluating the arrangement should compare its full fees with actual supply savings and the cost of doing the supported work itself. That is an economic test, not a beauty contest between feature lists. A practice with an established back office and favorable supplier terms has a different calculation from a nurse opening a first location.

The paperwork acquired a fourth verb

Moxie originally organized its promise around launch, run and grow. In September 2024, it added protect, announcing Compliance Defender alongside a $10 million Series B. The product addressed a weakness Moxie described among well-intentioned owners: keeping track of regulatory tasks while also treating patients. Medical director meetings, adverse-event reporting and advertising language all became part of the operating workflow.

The change was revealing. Helping someone open faster leaves a considerable job unfinished if the practice cannot maintain its documentation afterward. Compliance support belongs close to the records and actions it monitors. For an owner, the useful question is whether a reminder leads to completed work. Software still needs people who respond to it.

When the founder cannot be everywhere

Scale Suite, announced in March 2026, moves the focus toward larger independent practices. It adds structured business assessments, financial analysis, recruiting support and financing paired with investment coaching. Moxie named Kamau Massey as CEO in that announcement. The transition from one provider to several changes the problem: information and decisions must travel without the owner carrying everything personally.

The same announcement reported more than 700 supported practices, 97% retention and over 20% of new practices arriving through owner referrals. Moxie also announced a $25 million Series C led by Viewpoint Ventures, bringing reported total funding to $51 million. Those figures describe a business gaining customers and capital; they do not make every customer’s outcome identical.

There is a human layer to the expansion. Scale Society offers approved applicants a free peer community. Internally, Moxie describes a remote-first culture and hired its first people leader at five employees. Its published value “Speed with Care” fits a company serving businesses where urgency and precision must coexist. The useful expertise comes from people who have operated practices, not simply sold them software.

The next appointment has a plan

In February 2026, Obagi announced a collaboration with Moxie to assess its saypha MagIQ filler in real-world practice workflows. In June, Moxie introduced Treatment Plans: documented, sequenced care recommendations inside the chart, supported by consultation coaching and clinician templates. Both developments put clinical work closer to the business infrastructure supporting it.

The lesson readers can borrow is modest and demanding. Study the work before choosing the tool. Put the recurring tasks where people already operate. Measure the money after the fees. Independence does not require doing every job alone. For Moxie, the business opportunity is the distance between being good with patients and having a practice that can function when its owner finally goes home.
