In 1856, the problem in Buffalo was time. A manufacturer could buy a machine that would earn its keep over years. Getting a bank to lend on a sufficiently long clock was another matter. Pascal Paoli Pratt and Bronson Case Rumsey saw an opening. They helped establish Manufacturers and Traders Bank with $200,000 in capital. The name was practically a customer list.
- M&T serves households and businesses, with branches concentrated in the eastern United States.
- Acquisitions added territory and specialist capabilities, including Wilmington Trust.
- The recurring test: make a larger bank feel useful to one customer at a time.
A loan with a longer clock
There is something pleasingly literal about that origin. The founders were responding to equipment, factories and payment schedules. Their proposition began with a mismatch between the useful life of a thing and the money available to buy it. A bank could make itself valuable by understanding the mismatch.
That remains a useful way to read M&T. Checking accounts are part of the story. So are a contractor’s cash needs, an owner buying a business and a family deciding how to pass assets to the next generation. These customers share an institution; they do not share a financial problem.
The shelf behind the counter
For individuals, M&T offers the familiar banking shelf: deposits, cards, mortgages, home equity lending and digital access. Familiarity is useful here. Most people opening a checking account are trying to arrange their lives, with little appetite for a new financial philosophy.
MyWay Banking gives that thought a concrete form. It is checkless, has no overdraft fees and lists a $4.95 monthly maintenance charge. One qualifying transaction during the monthly service charge cycle waives that charge. Other fees can apply. The appeal is legibility: a customer can understand the condition before deciding whether the account fits.
Business customers have different clocks. M&T offers term loans, credit lines, acquisition financing and SBA-backed loans. Its acquisition-loan offering explicitly addresses buying a business while conserving operating liquidity. Commercial customers can also use treasury management and real estate financing. Wilmington Trust adds wealth planning and institutional services, including trust administration.
The business model connects those shelves. Deposits help fund loans; the spread between interest earned and funding costs contributes net interest income. Services generate fees. For the parent corporation, the mix spreads revenue across several activities, although credit losses, funding costs and operating expenses still determine how much reaches shareholders.
Buy the map. Keep the names.
M&T has repeatedly bought its way into new territory. Its acquisition history includes Wilmington Trust in 2011, Hudson City in 2015 and People’s United in 2022. Each deal changed what the bank could reach or do. Geography explains only part of the strategy.
Wilmington Trust brought established wealth and corporate client businesses. M&T retained that specialist name. The decision makes commercial sense: an acquired institution can contain expertise and recognition that are worth preserving. A single new sign outside every office would not necessarily improve the business inside.

René Jones’s career supplies another kind of continuity. He joined M&T in 1992, served as chief financial officer and became chairman and CEO in 2017. Today’s company combines that long internal apprenticeship with a much larger operating footprint. Keeping a familiar decision-making culture across acquired businesses is a substantial assignment.
The trouble with a username
People’s United offers the uncomfortable chapter. M&T announced the completed acquisition in April 2022 at a value of $8.3 billion. The deal extended its New England presence. Systems conversion followed over Labor Day weekend. For some customers, the experience quickly became a problem of access.
WSHU reported that special characters in existing usernames were among the reasons customers could not log in. Calls piled up; some people spent hours waiting for help. On September 9, an M&T spokesperson said the character-recognition issue had been resolved. The fix addressed an immediate obstacle. The incident exposed a larger operating burden.
“Our philosophy is based on customer experience not price.”
M&T Bank · About Us
That is the bank’s own stated position. The conversion makes it a demanding standard. A company selling relationships must preserve the ordinary machinery through which those relationships work. A practical lesson follows: test existing credentials and unusual customer cases, then provision support for the people who still get stuck.
Where the neighborhood shows up
There is more measurable evidence on the lending side. M&T reported 2,975 SBA 7(a) approvals worth $326.44 million in federal fiscal 2026. Its New England approvals rose from 107 in fiscal 2022 to 588 in fiscal 2026. Those are approval counts, rather than proof of subsequent business success, but they show activity behind the local-business pitch.
The community argument also has a specific price tag. The M&T Charitable Foundation committed $10 million toward College Track’s Baltimore expansion, alongside the Ravens and Bisciotti family foundation. The center officially opened in March 2026. Its model supports students over ten years, from high school toward college completion and employment.
A useful bank, under the right conditions
M&T occupies the space between a small local institution and the national banking giants. A business seeking financing, cash management and specialist advice can find several needs under one roof. A household wanting nearby branches may value the same network for simpler reasons.
The fit depends on the customer. Branch access has less value if you never visit. A national branch requirement calls for checking the actual map. An SBA guarantee does not eliminate a borrower’s need to repay. The idea worth copying from Buffalo is precise: understand what the customer needs to accomplish, then build the financing and everyday service around it.
