Jessica Grossman Keeps Choosing the Harder, More Useful Company

The physician-turned-founder has spent two decades converting clinical frustration into companies, products and hard-won momentum. At IgGenix, her operating system is simple: keep the mission close, the team candid and the next milestone concrete.

Jessica Grossman’s career makes more sense as a chain of irritations than a ladder. During her medical residency, the inefficiencies were close enough to touch. She could see procedures and systems that might work differently. What frustrated her was not simply that problems existed. It was the accepted tempo around them. Other people appeared comfortable waiting for change. She was not. “I didn’t want to just wait for innovation - I wanted to create it,” she later said. That sentence became a career plan before it became a quotation.

The conventional version of her story would call the next move a pivot from medicine to business. Grossman describes something more continuous. She took the observation skills of a physician, the impatience of an inventor and the increasingly learned grammar of venture building, then applied them to a wider field. The clinic had taught her where friction lived. A company could recruit engineers, raise money, run studies and carry an idea farther than one practitioner could.

Over two decades, the settings changed: a medical-device startup, a consulting firm, a Johnson & Johnson operating role, a remote-monitoring company, a nonprofit pharmaceutical business and, now, IgGenix, a venture-backed biotechnology company in South San Francisco. The underlying job barely changed. Grossman repeatedly arrived at the same difficult border, where promising science needs a team, a capital plan and a sequence of decisions before it can become anything useful.

Chapter 01The invention was the invitation

Grossman studied Biology and English at Brandeis University, graduating with honors, then earned her medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University. The pairing is almost too neat in retrospect. Biology gave her a way into the mechanism. Literature demanded attention to motive, structure and audience. Her later work would require both: understand what a technology does, then explain why a patient, clinician, employee, regulator or investor should care.

Her first company, Gynesonics, began with an invention for a minimally invasive device. From 2005 to 2008, she served as founder and president, developed the early strategic vision and raised the first two venture rounds. The experience established a pattern. Grossman would not position herself as the lab’s lone genius or the finance person who parachutes in after the technical work. She became the translator at the handoff, turning a clinical observation into a company with enough coherence to attract other specialists and capital.

After Gynesonics came JG Limited, her clinical and commercial strategy consultancy, and then a medical-director role at Ethicon Endo-Surgery. Those years widened the aperture. A founder learns what a young company must invent from scratch. An established operator sees the processes that let a large organization repeat quality at scale. Grossman accumulated both views, useful preparation for the job that followed.

At Sense4Baby, she served as founding president and CEO. The company developed a portable remote maternal and fetal monitoring system. She raised a Series A round and led the business through an acquisition after regulatory clearance and early commercialization. The entire sequence took roughly 18 months after she joined. Speed in a regulated industry is rarely the product of haste. It comes from lining up technical, regulatory, financial and commercial work so one handoff does not wait needlessly for another.

Chapter 02A mission needs a business model

Grossman’s next company looked different on paper. Medicines360 was a nonprofit pharmaceutical organization. She had consulted for it, joined its board, then became CEO in 2015. Its structure made an argument that many companies prefer to leave abstract: access should be designed into the operating model, not appended as a charitable gesture once the commercial work is finished.

The stealable idea

A mission becomes operational when it decides what gets funded, how success is measured and which tradeoffs a team refuses to make.

The work required collaboration across groups with different incentives. A nonprofit mission, a commercial-stage product, a large pharmaceutical partner, regulators, clinics and patients all had to fit inside one durable system. During Grossman’s five-year tenure, company biographies credit her with increasing revenue by 200 percent and raising $20 million in non-dilutive capital for market expansion and product development. The numbers matter because they show the mission surviving contact with operations.

There is a habit visible in how she talks about leadership: convert the ideal into the next action. Grossman has said she avoids meetings that are presentations for presentation’s sake. She prefers “working meetings” where senior leaders can get into the issue and leave with a decision. She also builds unstructured time into her schedule to think three to six months ahead. One practice protects the present from drift. The other protects the future from being crowded out by the present.

That balance helps explain her appetite for calculated risk. Grossman has advised her younger self to trust her instinct, accept learning opportunities and remember that she could build her own career path. The language is personal, but the method is managerial. Conviction chooses a direction. Routines create enough stability to keep moving through uncertainty.

Chapter 03The company after the idea

In late 2020, Grossman joined IgGenix. Professors Kari Nadeau and Stephen Quake had supplied the founding scientific premise. Derek Croote, the company’s co-founder and technical leader, helped build a platform for finding rare, allergen-specific antibodies and re-engineering them. Grossman’s assignment was familiar in shape and new in detail: turn an unusual technical capability into a development company.

The capital came in stages. IgGenix announced $25 million in Series A1 funding in 2021, then the first close of a $40 million Series B in 2023. Money in biotechnology is time bought under uncertainty. It hires the team, enables experiments, manufactures material and supports the controlled work required to move from a research claim to a clinical question. Grossman’s job was to make each dollar point toward a legible next milestone.

In October 2024, IgGenix announced that the first participant had been dosed in its Phase 1 study of IGNX001. By September 2025, enrollment was complete. A conference biography published that year described the achievement plainly: under Grossman, an internally discovered antibody candidate had been prepared to enter the clinic in four years. Press releases turn that passage into a clean line. The work itself is an accumulation of protocols, manufacturing choices, site relationships, board conversations and decisions made before the evidence is complete.

When Grossman reflected on completing enrollment, she emphasized protocol discipline, site partnership and a team that delivers. When she marked five years at IgGenix, she made the same move. She acknowledged the milestones and financing, then redirected attention to the scientific founders, employees, board members, patients and families around the company. “What matters most to me,” she wrote, “isn’t just the milestones, financings, or press releases - it’s the people.”

Chapter 04Lists for the lists

Grossman’s public advice to founders is refreshing because it is not arranged as mythology. At a recent biotech lunch, she said there are easier ways to make money than starting a company. She told founders to choose two or three advisers they really speak with instead of decorating a slide with twelve. She urged them to ask for the check because a vague fundraising conversation does not finance anything.

Then came the detail that makes the rest credible: “I have lists for my lists.” Grossman also said she knows the routines that let her function well and protects her sleep. The line lands because biotechnology encourages its leaders to perform as abstractions: conviction, resilience, vision. Grossman describes the human infrastructure beneath those nouns. A CEO still has attention that can fragment, judgment that can dull and a body that eventually sends an invoice.

This is the practical philosophy running beneath the résumé. Choose a problem that matters enough to justify the difficult journey. Build a small circle that tells the truth. Organize the day around decisions. Preserve time to look ahead. Ask clearly for what the company needs. Protect the person who has to do it again tomorrow.

It also explains why her career can hold so many business models without feeling scattered. Gynesonics needed an inventor-founder. Sense4Baby needed financing and a buyer. Medicines360 needed a leader who could make a nonprofit mission work through pharmaceutical partnerships. IgGenix needed an operator who could translate a discovery platform into a clinical-stage company. Grossman did not keep choosing the same kind of company. She kept choosing the same kind of responsibility.

The reusable skill is translation: observation into product, research into company, mission into priorities, long horizon into next decision.

Chapter 05The next concrete thing

Grossman’s aspirations remain specific. She has written about moving IgGenix’s programs forward, keeping patient needs central to development and making leadership in science feel available to more women and girls. In 2026, she spoke on a panel about patient-centricity and continued discussing the company’s lead program and broader discovery platform with the research community.

None of that guarantees an outcome. Biotechnology does not reward coherence with certainty. It asks companies to place expensive, disciplined bets and let evidence answer. The honest achievement is building an organization capable of asking the question properly, financing the work and acting on the result.

Grossman has now done versions of that work for more than twenty years. The visible milestones are patents, financings, an acquisition, approvals, a board seat and a program in the clinic. The quieter achievement is a method for getting from one to the next without confusing activity for progress. Find the friction. Build the structure it demands. Put the mission into the operating model. End the meeting with an action. Then look up, three to six months ahead, and decide what useful thing has to become concrete next.
