Illuma.

Every conversation secured. AI-powered voice biometrics and deepfake defense built for credit unions and community banks.

Plano, Texas - The IllumaSHIELD engine listens to the natural cadence of a caller's voice, verifies identity in the background, and flags the synthetic clones that legacy security questions can't catch.

The Company

A voice is hard to fake. Illuma bet everything on that.

Illuma - founded as Illuma Labs - builds voice security software that protects the oldest channel in banking: the phone call. Its flagship product, IllumaSHIELD, verifies who is on the line by the sound of their voice, quietly, while they talk.

For decades, contact centers leaned on knowledge-based authentication - mother's maiden name, the last four digits, a PIN scribbled on a sticky note. The problem is that the same answers meant to protect an account holder are often already in a fraudster's hands, sold in bulk after a data breach. Illuma's founders started from that gap and built a different kind of credential: the voiceprint.

IllumaSHIELD uses passive voice biometrics. There is no enrollment ritual to memorize and no phrase to repeat. As a member speaks naturally with an agent, the system compares the live voice against a stored voiceprint and returns a verification decision - typically in about 15 seconds, versus the 90 or so that scripted security questions can consume.

The company is deliberately narrow in its focus. It sells to credit unions, community banks, and regional lenders - institutions that big voice-biometrics vendors have historically priced out. Illuma's pitch is that state-of-the-art fraud defense should not require an enterprise budget, and its whole product and go-to-market strategy is organized around that idea.

Headquartered in Plano, Texas and run as a 100% US-based operation, Illuma is a lean team - roughly 31 people - taking on an outsized and fast-moving problem. As generative AI makes convincing voice clones cheap to produce, the contact center has become a live front for fraud, and Illuma has positioned itself squarely in front of it.

How It Works

Three layers, one goal: make the attack cost more than the payout.

Illuma treats voice fraud as an economics problem. Stack enough friction on the attacker, and breaking in stops being worth the effort. IllumaSHIELD does that in three layers.

1

Passive Voice Biometrics

A strong authentication engine matches a caller's live voice to their enrolled voiceprint in real time - no passwords, no security questions, no interruption to the conversation.

2

Deepfake Detection Engine

A dedicated model built to spot AI-generated synthetic voices and clones. This is the technology Illuma demoed live at Finovate 2024 - catching a deepfake on stage to win Best of Show.

3

Layered Multifactor Authentication

Additional identity signals combine with the voiceprint to defend against social engineering and repeat attackers, so a single spoofed factor isn't enough to get through.

"Illuma impressed the Finovate audience by showing how its technology blocks voice fraud attempts - even when attackers use deepfake audio and voice clones." FinovateFall 2024, Best of Show
The Payoff

Shorter calls, better security

Authentication used to be the slowest part of a support call. Illuma compresses it, and the savings compound across every member interaction.

Deepfake Detection

An engine tuned to detect AI-generated and cloned voices, blocking synthetic-voice attacks before they reach an agent.

Identity

Layered MFA

Multi-signal verification for the voice channel that defends against social engineering and repeat attackers.

Deploy

Platform Integrations

Prebuilt connectors for Genesys Cloud CX (via AppFoundry) and Glia, enabling rollout in days rather than months.

Customers & Market

Built for the institutions the giants overlook

Who uses it. Credit unions, community and regional banks, lenders, and their contact centers and help desks. Named clients and partners include Connexus Credit Union, TDECU, AmeriCU Credit Union, and SF Fire Credit Union.

The problem it solves. Contact-center fraud and slow, leaky authentication. Security questions frustrate legitimate callers and barely slow down criminals armed with breached data - and now, AI voice clones. Illuma removes the questions and adds a defense tuned for synthetic voices.

Where it fits. Illuma sits in the voice-biometrics and contact-center fraud market alongside larger players like Nuance/Microsoft, Pindrop, and NICE. Its edge is accessibility: enterprise-grade capability packaged and priced for smaller financial institutions, delivered through the platforms they already run.

Business model. B2B SaaS. IllumaSHIELD is licensed as a cloud subscription and deployed through integrations with contact-center and digital-service platforms, keeping onboarding fast and infrastructure light for the customer.

Questions

The basics

What does Illuma do?

Illuma provides AI-powered voice security for contact centers. IllumaSHIELD authenticates callers in real time using passive voice biometrics and detects deepfake and synthetic-voice fraud, primarily for credit unions and community banks.

How is it faster than security questions?

IllumaSHIELD verifies a caller's voiceprint passively as they speak - typically in about 15 seconds, versus roughly 90 seconds of knowledge-based questions - with no PINs or passwords to remember.

How does Illuma handle deepfakes?

It uses three layers: passive voice biometrics, a dedicated deepfake-detection engine for synthetic voices, and layered multifactor authentication. The deepfake engine won Finovate Best of Show in 2024.

Who funds Illuma and how much has it raised?

Illuma raised a $9M Series A in September 2024 led by LiveOak Ventures, with Forefront Venture Partners, Curql, UsNet, Capital Factory, Connexus, and TDECU participating - about $11.5M total, plus later financing from Stifel Bank.

Who uses Illuma?

Credit unions, community and regional banks, and their contact centers. Named clients and partners include Connexus Credit Union, TDECU, AmeriCU, and SF Fire Credit Union, with integrations for Genesys and Glia.
