Great Minds began as an education advocacy group and became a public benefit corporation selling knowledge-rich math, literacy and science programs. Its wager is unusually concrete: give teachers coherent materials, then stay for the difficult work of implementation.

On a first-grade desk, a small book can do one job or several. It can give a child a controlled set of letter sounds to decode. It can also tell her about a coral reef, a rice field, or a painter. Great Minds built Geodes around the second possibility: books that let a beginner practice reading while acquiring something worth remembering. The product is a useful miniature of the company. Skill and knowledge are not rivals here. The point is to make them accumulate together.

That sounds like a classroom philosophy, because it is. It is also the organizing logic of a sizable education business. Great Minds develops core curricula for math, English language arts, early literacy, and science, then surrounds those programs with print editions, digital lessons, assessments, manipulatives, experiment kits, trade books, coaching, and professional learning. During 2024 and 2025, the company says its materials and services reached more than 4.6 million students in 13,000 schools and districts across all 50 states.

The accidental publisher

Great Minds did not begin with a glossy textbook catalog. Lynne Munson founded the organization in 2007 as a research and advocacy group pursuing a content-rich liberal arts education. The turn into publishing arrived when educators wanted actual materials. A team of teachers and scholars produced Common Core curriculum maps in English language arts, then wrote EngageNY Math for New York State. That open material became the basis of Eureka Math, the title that put Great Minds into classrooms nationwide.

The path matters because it explains the company's posture. Its authors were solving for the sequence of instruction, not merely decorating an existing textbook franchise. In math, that means concepts recur with deliberate variation across lessons and grades. A visual model introduced in elementary school is meant to remain useful when the student meets fractions, ratios, or algebra. The company calls this coherence. In plainer terms, Tuesday's lesson should remember Monday.

Eureka Math's reach opened the door to a portfolio. Wit & Wisdom, launched in 2016, built English instruction around full books, art, and topics from history, geography, and science. Geodes followed with its knowledge-rich decodable readers, developed with Wilson Language Training. PhD Science made real-world phenomena the spine of an elementary science program. Eureka Math² redesigned the math experience for print and screens. Arts & Letters added a more configurable K-8 literacy option, with fine art, multimedia, assessments, and scaffolds woven into the daily lesson.

What the customer actually buys

The visible customer is a district purchasing office. The daily users are less tidy: teachers planning at night, coaches studying student work, principals monitoring a rollout, children marking up workbooks, and families trying to understand a new method at the kitchen table. Great Minds packages for that whole chain. A district can buy teacher editions and consumable student books, classroom libraries, science investigation kits, math manipulatives, digital presentation tools, assessments, reporting, workshops, and coaching.

This is a business-to-government and business-to-school model, with adoption cycles that can be slow and contracts that can be substantial. Revenue comes from materials, licenses, and services rather than advertising or a consumer subscription. Free resources still play a strategic role. EngageNY gave the original math work enormous distribution, and Great Minds now offers PhD Science K-2 PDFs as an open educational resource. Open access lets educators inspect and try the intellectual product; paid editions and support make it operational at scale.

The implementation layer is not an accessory. Replacing a core program asks teachers to change routines, vocabulary, pacing, and sometimes their mental model of a subject. A workshop on launch day cannot carry that alone. Great Minds offers coaching, leadership development, virtual sessions, short learning labs, video libraries, and on-demand courses. Its own public benefit report points to Texas evidence that districts using Eureka Math TEKS Edition made stronger gains when they also used implementation services.

A crowded shelf, a different organizing idea

Great Minds competes with the familiar giants of educational publishing - Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, McGraw Hill, and Savvas - as well as newer curriculum companies such as Amplify, Carnegie Learning, Curriculum Associates, Imagine Learning, and nonprofit or open providers such as Open Up Resources. Its largest alternative may be the improvised bundle: district-made units, teacher-created slides, and supplemental websites stitched together week by week.

The company's distinction is not that competitors lack rigor, digital tools, or training. It is the insistence that knowledge-building should connect the pieces. Wit & Wisdom students read literature while learning history or science. Geodes aligns decoding practice with content. PhD Science uses a phenomenon to create a storyline rather than presenting isolated facts. Eureka Math² aims to link conceptual models, fluency, and application. The portfolio says a curriculum is not a searchable pile of activities. It is an edited sequence.

Accessibility is part of that design argument. Eureka Math² earned certifications from CAST connected to Universal Design for Learning. Arts & Letters includes Prologue lessons and supports for multilingual learners. Great Minds has also made dyslexia support unusually visible in its public work. The equity claim is demanding rather than remedial: keep grade-level knowledge in view, then build the scaffolds that allow more students to reach it. The reported Title I footprint - more than 83 percent of schools served - gives that claim a meaningful test population.

The platform starts to show

In July 2022, education-focused investment fund A-Street put $150 million into Great Minds. Of that amount, $100 million was newly issued capital for expansion and $50 million purchased a stake from the nonprofit majority owner. The stated priorities included better digital experiences and extending curricula into high school. The deal did not turn Great Minds into a conventional venture-backed startup. A-Street remained a minority owner, and the public benefit corporation structure stayed in place.

The more revealing changes came later. John White, a former Louisiana state superintendent who joined Great Minds in 2022, became chief executive in January 2025. Munson moved to CEO Emerita. In early 2026, the company acquired the Odell High School Literacy Program, bringing whole-text ELA materials for Grades 9-12 into the portfolio. The move pushes Great Minds closer to a continuous literacy offering from emerging reader through graduation.

Partnerships show the same expansion sideways. A Renaissance integration will connect Eureka Math² lessons with Star Math assessment data and recommendations in Renaissance Next. Magpie Literacy is bringing adaptive foundational-skills practice and an integrated assessment into Great Minds' ELA ecosystem, with a broader K-8 package planned for fall 2027. These are not random feature additions. They put the core curriculum in the middle of a loop: teach, observe, recommend, adjust.

The strategic asset is not one famous math title. It is the ability to make content, measurement, and teacher support behave like one system.

The risk in the promise

Coherence creates its own vulnerabilities. A carefully sequenced program can feel rigid when calendars shrink, students arrive with different prior knowledge, or teachers lack preparation time. Rich texts cost money. Hands-on science requires logistics. Digital assessment introduces another interface. A district can purchase every component and still fail to create the conditions for teachers to use them well. Great Minds' growing services operation is both an answer to this problem and an admission of its size.

Evidence must also keep pace with reach. Great Minds highlights independent studies, including University of Southern California findings on Eureka Math² in North Carolina and Johns Hopkins research on its partnership with San Tan Heights K-8 in Arizona. Product reviews can establish standards alignment and usability; implementation studies can suggest what happens in real schools. Neither makes outcomes automatic. Curriculum is an input handled by people, inside institutions that vary enormously.

That may be why the company's 2030 objective is phrased around both scale and acceleration: serve more than eight million students annually, with most showing improvement in relevant subjects. The first number is distribution. The second is proof. Great Minds has already shown that teacher-written materials can travel farther than their original state website. Its next chapter is about whether a connected curriculum system can remain intellectually coherent while becoming operationally flexible.

Back on that first-grade desk, the wager remains easy to see. The child is not practicing a disposable skill before real learning begins. The practice is the learning, and the page is connected to the next page. Great Minds has spent nearly two decades turning that modest classroom sequence into a national company. The books got bigger. The system grew around them. The line between one lesson and the next is still the whole point.
