GQR hires for
the hard part.

A vacant role is rarely the whole problem. GQR combines specialist recruiters, workforce operations and its own AI software to tackle what sits behind the job description.

The hospital needed more clinical staff. That was the obvious problem. The less obvious problems were invoices, spending records and people who did not stay. In a case GQR published in March 2024, an unnamed hospital network was struggling to expand contract clinical support while its existing suppliers delivered inconsistently. Hiring another person would help. Hiring another person into the same muddle would leave much of the muddle intact.

The useful bits
  • Specialist hiring across healthcare, life sciences, technology and Workday.
  • Help ranges from one permanent hire to outsourced recruiting and supplier management.
  • Nebula adds AI sourcing and outreach; recruiters handle the conversations.

GQR introduced Workday’s VNDLY vendor management system, improved visibility into spending and kept relationships with other vendors to cover critical needs. Its account reports that 80% of open requisitions were filled and candidate contract completion increased by 15%. These are company-reported results from one engagement. The interesting detail is the diagnosis: the hospital’s staffing shortage also involved the machinery through which staffing happened.

A recruiter learns the particulars

That diagnosis helps explain GQR’s business. It sells specialist staffing, permanent search, advisory work and managed recruiting services, alongside its proprietary software. Employers can ask for a person, a project team or help running the process. Candidates can look for healthcare and technology opportunities. The same company sits on both sides of a familiar irritation: employers cannot find the right people, while people cannot find the right opening.

GQR began in London in 2009. Its expansion brought offices in New York in 2014, Sydney in 2016 and Austin in 2017. Co-founder and CEO Steven Talbot’s route included investment banking and project finance. His biography contains an instructive detour: he originally leaned toward engineering, then switched to economics and business. Technical work and commercial judgment would eventually become neighboring concerns at GQR.

Its practices make specialization concrete. Technology covers software engineering, data science and cybersecurity. Life sciences spans biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and medical technology. Workday is a practice in its own right, serving organizations that need people who understand that particular enterprise software ecosystem. A résumé can look persuasive to a generalist while missing the detail that matters to the hiring manager.

Healthcare has also shaped the company through acquisition. GQR announced its purchase of Uniti Med in July 2024, describing a broader network and expanded contractor support. Its announcement included benefits eligibility from the first day of an assignment. For a traveling clinician, the practical details around a placement deserve attention alongside the job itself.

GQR competes for work employers might otherwise give to an internal recruiting team, a specialist search firm or another staffing supplier. Its case rests on combining services that those buyers could purchase separately. Whether that combination helps depends on how closely the pieces fit the assignment.

The people who will not apply

Consider GQR’s account of a high-frequency trading firm building new trading desks. The target portfolio managers were already well paid. They had reasons to avoid recruiters. An advertisement could describe the opportunity perfectly and still never reach the conversation that mattered.

GQR mapped competing trading teams and used informal meetings with the client’s CEO to open discussions. Its published account describes work with more than a dozen portfolio managers over four years. The method depended on understanding a small professional world and making an introduction worth accepting. The candidate’s reluctance was part of the assignment.

Acadia Pharmaceuticals presented a different puzzle. In July 2025, GQR described a brief to fill 38 specialized commercial roles within 12 weeks for a team supporting DAYBUE. GQR embedded recruiters, centralized pipeline reporting, used Nebula for sourcing and distributed recruitment content under Acadia’s brand. It reports filling all 38 positions, with 92% offer acceptance and a 35% reduction in time-to-hire.

The cases reward different skills. A trading search needs discretion and patience. A concentrated pharmaceutical hiring program needs coordination and a shared view of progress. Buying either service as a generic pile of résumés misses the work involved.

A software company inside the recruiter

GQR also acquired Untapt, whose talent-matching technology became a foundation for Nebula. The attraction is easy to follow: a recruiting business repeatedly searches for people, compares them with roles and tries to start useful conversations. Software can take on some of that repetitive work.

Nebula offers candidate discovery, ranking, personalized outreach and pipeline reporting. GQR’s current description advertises access to more than 200 million professional profiles. That is the advertised search universe, rather than a count of people waiting to accept a job. Availability, interest and suitability still have to survive contact with a person.

In a January 2025 essay, GQR argued that disconnected AI tools create extra costs and fragmented work. Nebula is its answer to that coordination problem. Corbel Capital Partners’ 2021 structured investment in parent company Wynden Stark also described the group’s candidate-ranking technology, putting software inside the investment story.

“There should always be a human in the loop.”

That boundary matters. Matching can suggest who deserves attention. Negotiation and a candidate’s hesitation require judgment. GQR’s proposition combines automation with recruiters who know the relevant market. A buyer should examine both parts, especially when credentials, compensation or sensitive career decisions make a superficially good match insufficient.

Buy the part you need

GQR’s range creates several buying decisions. Contract staffing addresses temporary capacity. Permanent search targets lasting hires. Recruitment process outsourcing supplies recruiting support; managed services coordinate a contingent workforce and its suppliers. Advisory work addresses planning. Nebula provides software. An employer needs to identify which job it wants GQR itself to perform.

There is one unusually clear pricing detail. The GQR × Turbin Workday Talent Marketplace, announced in July 2025, advertises no upfront fees: clients pay for approved hours after hiring talent. It lets them browse vetted consultants, see availability and request introductions, with contracts and timesheets supported through the platform.

The practical lesson travels beyond recruitment. Make the blockage visible before buying help. If spending controls are weak, repair them. If desirable candidates will not engage, change the approach. If interviews stall inside the employer, a larger database will not make decisions arrive. GQR is useful when specialist search and operational follow-through address the actual constraint. The first deliverable should be a sharper understanding of the vacancy.
