A healthcare marketer buys an advertisement. Someone clicks. Someone else books an appointment. Somewhere between those events lies the answer to a deceptively expensive question: did the advertisement work? For a shoe shop, the tracking machinery is routine. For a healthcare provider, that machinery can carry information a patient would rather keep between themselves and a clinician. The little pixel has acquired rather large responsibilities.
- Freshpaint governs the data moving from healthcare websites to marketing tools.
- Its customers buy both privacy controls and a clearer view of marketing results.
- The useful lesson: approve the feedback loop before asking an advertising algorithm to learn.
The advertisement that forgot how to learn
Allergy Partners encountered the financial side of this problem. In Freshpaint’s published customer account, the provider advertised without the conversion signals that help platforms optimize campaigns. Cost per lead reached $300. That was a lead, mind you: a possibility, not an occupied appointment slot.
“No specialty clinic can sustain itself at $300 per lead.”Jonathan Silver, VP of Marketing, Allergy Partners
After consulting trusted advisers, the team adopted Freshpaint, worked through legal and security concerns, and restored controlled conversion feedback to its advertising tools. The case study reports cost per lead falling to $12. Clinic managers, previously doubtful about digital advertising, became more confident in it. A vendor-published account cannot isolate every influence on performance, but the mechanism is intelligible: an advertising system given useful results can adjust its choices.

A gate between the website and the world
Freshpaint’s central job is to control the route. Rather than let each third-party tracker collect information directly from a healthcare website, the platform collects data and applies governance before sending approved information onward through server-side connections. Its controls include identifier masking and allowlists specifying which events and properties may reach particular destinations.
The distinction matters. “Send a conversion” sounds simple until the event carries a revealing URL or an identifying detail. Freshpaint’s documented destination-specific rules can allow an advertising click identifier while blocking a page URL, for example. Marketing gets a useful signal; privacy reviewers get a decision they can inspect. The product turns a vague request to “be careful” into an actual data-sharing rule.
Rules belong before delivery. A dashboard cannot recall data already sent.
Before patient privacy, a Postgres pivot
The company did not begin with this healthcare proposition. Michael Malis was working on Perfalytics, a Postgres performance product. Near the end of Y Combinator’s Summer 2019 batch, he and Steven Fitzsimmons pivoted to Freshpaint, with Fitzsimmons joining full time. Both had been early employees at Heap. They understood the tedious negotiations required to get behavioral data into the tools that needed it.
The first broad promise was fewer engineering handoffs. Non-engineers could collect and activate customer data without repeatedly asking developers to instrument another event. In November 2022, Freshpaint announced a $9.5 million Series A led by Intel Capital, alongside $5 million in debt financing and a free tier. Healthcare governance was already part of that announcement. The dedicated Healthcare Privacy Platform followed in November 2023.
This is an evolution worth noticing. The same data-routing expertise answered two different questions: how can a team get data into its tools, and how can it prevent the wrong data from getting there? Healthcare gave the second question a particularly demanding audience.

The sale now ends at the appointment
Today, Freshpaint’s homepage says more than 300 healthcare organizations use it. The market extends from hospital systems and urgent-care groups to insurers, dental organizations, pharma and virtual care. These are buyers with different commercial goals, but a shared need to explain their marketing without casually exporting sensitive information.
The product range follows the patient journey. Audiences supports retargeting, lookalikes and exclusions. Ad Performance connects campaigns with attended appointments and revenue. Insights gathers performance across channels. Privacy-focused maps and video hosting address another easily overlooked detail: an embedded convenience can introduce a third party into a website visit. A map is useful; its data behavior deserves an invitation check.
Freshpaint also competes for more of the analytics budget. Its conversion tools bring together funnels, heatmaps, surveys and session replay. The September 29, 2026 update describes masked replay, attribution that includes paid and unpaid channels, broader AI queries and automatic video captions. The company is selling the ability to understand what happens after data has been made usable.
The handoff is part of the product
A tracker scan can identify a problem without arranging its repair. Marketing sees it; legal evaluates it; IT removes or replaces the script. An agency may have installed it. Freshpaint’s updated monitoring workflow puts the finding, owner, decision and history together, including read-only links for collaborators who lack a login. The improvement is almost bureaucratic, which is precisely its charm: somebody can finally tell who is holding the ball.
That customer-facing work sits alongside the company’s stated emphasis on ownership, empathy and learning. Its careers page calls one value “Run Toward Fires.” It is a sensible preference for a business whose customers would very much like fewer fires.
What the buyer should take home
Freshpaint sells subscription software through Comply, Perform and Scale packages, with capability and support differences. Prices require a sales conversation. In July 2024, its financing release announced a $30.7 million Series B led by Threshold, following reported tenfold revenue growth in 2023. Ray Mina, its CMO since 2022, became CEO in March 2026. A strategic partnership with WebMD Ignite pairs the infrastructure with healthcare marketing services.
Alternatives include healthcare specialist Ours Privacy and a company’s own maintained data pipeline. The practical comparison is whether a team can govern collection, keep rules current and connect outcomes at a tolerable operating cost. Freshpaint’s lesson is copyable: inventory the trackers, define permitted signals, assign owners and measure results beyond form submissions. It works best when marketing, privacy and technical teams cooperate. Missing outcome data, bypassing scripts or poorly configured rules leave gaps. Software cannot supply that cooperation, but it can give it somewhere to happen.
