Rebuilding the plumbing of private capital

Ferdinand Roberts runs Asset Class, a software company most people outside private markets have never heard of and most people inside them increasingly cannot ignore. Its job is unglamorous and enormous: take the tangle of spreadsheets, email threads, data rooms and legacy systems that private equity and venture firms use to raise money and manage it, and turn all of that into a single connected platform. Fundraising, investor onboarding, investor portals, deal flow, portfolio tracking and fund administration - one login instead of a dozen.

As founder and CEO, Roberts frames the company around a phrase that has become something of an internal motto. "As we've grown, we like to say that the venture capital, private equity, and commercial lending firms we work with come for the technology we provide and stay for the network we offer," he has said. That network now runs to more than 15,000 accredited investors, and the platform services roughly $33 billion in assets across 300-plus funds.

The pitch is not about flashy dashboards, though there are plenty. It is about connective tissue. Roberts's recurring argument is that limited partners - the pensions, family offices and wealthy individuals who put money into funds - have grown more sophisticated and more demanding faster than the software serving them has kept up. "We're seeing a significant change in the Venture Capital Sector as firms make the move to connect their front, middle, and back-office functions to better serve their LPs, streamline their portfolio management, and connect data in a manner that was not possible - until now," he has said. Asset Class exists to close that gap.

"Come for the technology we provide and stay for the network we offer."

Ferdinand Roberts · Founder & CEO, Asset Class

The idea did not arrive in the abstract. Before Asset Class, Roberts was working inside the industry he now sells to. In 2017 he joined Resolute Capital Partners as Director of Strategy & Capital Markets, and while leading capital markets for a private equity firm he saw up close how disjointed and chaotic fundraising, investor relations, deal management and portfolio management could be. The frustration was specific and repeated. The response was to build the tool he wished he had.

That instinct - to fix a broken system rather than tolerate it - shows up across his career. Roberts spent more than 25 years in technology before Asset Class, including senior roles at some of the industry's best-known names: Yahoo!, Cisco and Ariba. His resume covers sales, marketing, operations, product management and strategic partnerships, the kind of cross-functional grounding that tends to produce operators who can see a whole business rather than one slice of it.

He is also a repeat founder, and the pattern is instructive. In 2011 he started SaaS Markets, an early marketplace play that was voted a Top 10 Cloud Startup to watch by CIO Magazine. It was acquired in 2014 by Sysnet Global Solutions, where Roberts stayed on and later served as COO. In 2016 he launched GrowthQuarter Ventures. By the time he founded Asset Class in 2020, he had already built, sold and operated inside acquired companies - experience that reads clearly in how deliberately Asset Class has scaled.

"LPs are becoming more demanding and more sophisticated in their needs."

"Connect data in a manner that was not possible - until now."

The scaling has been geographic as well as commercial. Asset Class is headquartered in Dublin, with offices in New York, London and Atlanta, and Roberts himself is based in New York. That footprint reflects a client base that spans jurisdictions - private equity, venture capital, hedge funds, family offices, wealth advisory and fundraising sponsors, all with their own compliance regimes and their own reasons to want their operations in one place.

In July 2024 the company announced an $11.6 million Series A led by Canapi Ventures, with participation from Live Oak Ventures, Plexus Capital and Total Technology Ventures. The framing from investors was telling. Canapi's Neil Underwood - who also sits on the Asset Class board - pointed to "the company's unrivaled ability to bring secondary market liquidity to the private capital markets." Live Oak's Stephanie Mann talked about "exciting applications of embedded banking in partnership with Asset Class." The money is earmarked for exactly the two functions a scaling platform company needs most: more software engineers and more business development.

Roberts's own summary of the round stayed characteristically grounded in the customer. "Our client-first approach has led us to achieve incredible growth, and this new round of funding will only propel us further on our mission to offer a completely integrated, end-to-end investment management platform in the alternatives space," he said. The words "client-first" and "integrated" do a lot of work in how he talks about the company - the first is the culture, the second is the product thesis.

"Our client-first approach has led us to achieve incredible growth... on our mission to offer a completely integrated, end-to-end investment management platform."

Ferdinand Roberts on the Series A

More recently, Asset Class has repositioned itself as "AI-first," folding machine intelligence into the fundraising, investor-relations and fund-administration workflows that make up its core. It is the kind of move that could read as bandwagon-chasing at a lesser company; at Asset Class it lands as a logical next layer on a platform whose entire premise is connecting data that used to live in silos. Once the data is in one place, applying intelligence to it is the obvious step.

There is a side to Roberts that has nothing to do with fund administration. He is the founder of Zero Environmental Limited, a personal venture aimed at reforestation and regenerating the planet. It sits oddly next to a fintech company on paper, but the underlying instinct is the same one that produced Asset Class: identify a broken or neglected system, then try to rebuild it rather than complain about it. He also spends time in the private-capital conversation directly, appearing on and hosting industry podcasts including The People of Private Capital and a guest turn on The Private Equity Podcast by Raw Selection.

What emerges is a founder defined less by a single dramatic bet than by accumulated pattern recognition. Roberts has watched enterprise software from the inside at Yahoo!, Cisco and Ariba, built and sold a cloud startup, run operations as a COO, and worked the capital-markets desk of a PE firm. Asset Class is the synthesis of all of it - a bet that private capital, for all the money moving through it, has been running on tooling that never quite caught up to the stakes. He is still building it, and the industry, by most measures, is still catching up to him.
