Before a translator can sit a certification exam from home, there is the small matter of the second camera. The American Translators Association’s online guidelines require a phone or tablet running ExamRoom.AI’s app for the full three-hour sitting. There is also a photo ID, a computer camera, and screen sharing. The desk becomes a testing room through a sequence of quite ordinary preparations.
- ExamRoom.AI connects exam development, delivery, supervision, analysis, and credentials.
- Its buyers include education providers, certification bodies, and employers.
- The interesting bet: fewer handoffs between the people and systems running a test.
That sequence is a useful way into ExamRoom.AI. The name suggests an electronic invigilator. The business reaches much further. Its Unified Assessment Platform covers the administrative territory surrounding the test: the questions, the schedule, the candidate, the score, and the credential that follows. For an institution, the attraction is continuity. Someone has to make all those pieces agree.
The question before the camera
Founded in 2017, with Vinod Jayakeerthi and Henry Sorensen identified as founders in public company profiles, ExamRoom.AI now lists its headquarters in Lake Mary, Florida. Its offices span several countries. But geography explains less about the company than the peculiar nature of its inventory. Here, the valuable objects are called items. Most people call them questions.
Questions need custody. An author drafts one; specialists review it; somebody revises the wording; another person approves it for use. ExamRoom.AI’s Item Bank provides version histories, approval chains, tagging, and searchable pools. It also offers AI-assisted question generation. The practical benefit is that a revision can remain attached to its history instead of wandering through email attachments.
There is a wonderful piece of assessment vocabulary buried in the product: enemy items. These are questions that should not appear together, perhaps because one cues the answer to another. A candidate can follow every rule and still receive an unfairly revealing test. ExamRoom.AI includes enemy-item detection in its content and psychometric tools. Security begins in the wording.

Even earlier comes the decision about what a test ought to measure. The Job Task Analysis tool organizes expert input, task statements, surveys, and blueprints. Standard-setting software supports the work of choosing a defensible passing threshold. Together, these products address an awkward truth about testing: watching a candidate carefully cannot establish whether the exam asked the right things.
The proctor has company
During the sitting, customers can choose live human supervision, automated monitoring, hybrid proctoring, or recorded review. They can also bring their own proctors. That last option is revealing. An institution may already have people who understand its candidates, languages, or accommodations. The software can fit around that knowledge rather than requiring a single staffing arrangement.
ExamLock addresses another part of the room: the computer itself. The secure-browser product restricts activity and advertises detection of additional displays and virtual machines, alongside an offline mode. ExamLock Lite offers a lighter extension approach. These are configurable security tools; the right arrangement depends on the test sponsor’s rules and the equipment candidates actually have.

There is infrastructure behind the conversation, too. Vonage announced in November 2022 that ExamRoom.AI used its Video and Voice APIs for remote testing. Those connections let supervisors see webcam and desktop feeds, inspect time-stamped flags, and communicate with candidates. Intel separately documents proctoring built with its processors and OpenVINO toolkit, plus FIDO technology that protects biometric data on the user’s device.
The software had an exam of its own
In a TrueFoundry case study, data-science leader Deepak M K describes a 2021 monitoring model that worked locally but stumbled in production. Detection could take five minutes, and small objects went missing. Capacity and serving problems had overwhelmed the promise of the model.

The team changed its operating infrastructure. TrueFoundry reports that service deployment fell from six days to under two hours, freeing three ML Ops engineers for product work. The lesson other teams can copy is practical: test under real load, make failures visible, and track what each service costs to run.
After the last answer
ExamRoom.AI’s psychometric tools examine question performance, exposure, and differences between candidate groups. Specialists can bring their own algorithms. CrediPort then handles digital credentials, including issuance, verification, expiration, and revocation. These are different jobs, but their connection matters: a qualification must remain understandable and checkable after the examination session disappears from everyone’s calendar.
The wider catalog also accommodates physical testing sites and paper-and-pencil exams through Edison Assessments. A university, licensing body, or employer can therefore consider individual modules or a broader installation. The AWS Marketplace listing describes a business sold through contracts plus usage, with private offers for custom terms. Buyers are purchasing an operating arrangement as well as access to software.
The distinction between delivery and judgment is especially visible in the translator’s exam. ATA’s guide says results arrive from ATA in roughly 12 to 26 weeks. A proctoring session may be digital without making the professional evaluation instantaneous. Institutions still decide what evidence matters, who evaluates it, and when a candidate receives a decision. Software connects those steps; the sponsor sets the terms.
ExamRoom.AI’s own AI responsibility statement acknowledges that people can overestimate a model’s objectivity. That is a useful constraint for a business selling exam integrity. A flag needs a policy, a reviewer, and a consequence proportionate to the evidence.
That breadth gives ExamRoom.AI its market position. A buyer choosing among proctoring tools might care chiefly about supervision. A certification program may care just as much about question governance, scheduling, and credential records. The useful comparison is the amount of work each option covers, and how much coordination the institution must still do itself.
Fit has limits. A small, low-stakes quiz may not justify this much machinery. A remote sitting also depends on candidate preparation, usable equipment, and acceptance of the sponsor’s recording rules. The translator with the second camera makes those conditions tangible. Before the platform can establish anything about an answer, the person at the desk must be able to take the test.
