The first machine Evan Kervella tried to build was a company. Shorten, started during a gap year in engineering school, promised indoor navigation for supermarkets. It did not become the business he wanted. After his final internship in 2018, Kervella gave himself several months to let that failure settle. He studied what had gone wrong and reached an unsentimental conclusion: wanting to be an entrepreneur had not equipped him to become one. His conditions had to change.
He moved toward Paris, returned to data science and waited for a better opening. The work was respectable. At AT Internet, then at energy-software company METRON, he dealt in classification, forecasting and models. Yet he had already decided that a career as a data scientist was not the destination. Entrepreneurship, he later said, felt obvious. The question was how to approach it with more than the same tools that had failed him once.
The useful opening came through Entrepreneur First. Kervella joined the Paris program and, on its first day, met Dimitri Labat, an experimental physicist. Their pairing joined two habits of mind: one trained to find patterns in data, the other trained to pull faint evidence from physical systems. Chipiron would eventually need both.
Kervella's education had already crossed more borders than the standard founder biography suggests. At Centrale Marseille, he concentrated on mathematics and computer science, including optimization, machine learning and wavelets. He added graduate work in mathematics and computer science at Aix-Marseille University, plus economics and quantitative finance at the University of Bologna. The combination helps explain his appetite for a company that must coordinate physical performance, software recovery and a capital-intensive business model. Each discipline supplies only part of the answer.
He chose engineering, he once explained, from intellectual curiosity and an attraction to its prestige. That answer is blunt enough to be useful. Kervella rarely edits ambition out of his own story. He treats it as material to inspect. The older essays show him testing motives, separating borrowed desires from durable ones and asking what remains when status loses its force. Chipiron gave those questions a laboratory with a payroll.

The room around the machine
A conventional MRI scanner arrives with an invisible second product. There is the machine, and then there is the room built to accept it: shielding, cooling, power, installation and a workflow organized around a large fixed object. Chipiron's founding wager was that some of those burdens were inherited engineering choices rather than permanent laws.
The company chose ultra-low magnetic fields. A weaker field makes the hardware lighter and changes the installation problem, but it also produces a much fainter signal. That trade replaces one difficult problem with several others. Chipiron's proposed stack uses cryogenic SQUID sensors to detect the signal, active noise cancellation to separate it from the environment, tailored magnet and gradient design, and unconventional reconstruction software to form an image from the result.
This is why the company is more interesting as a systems story than as a miniaturization story. A smaller object alone would not solve the infrastructure around it. The scanner, detector, environment and software have to be redesigned as a package. In Chipiron's account, the resulting machine is intended to work without helium or a shielded room. Its website describes an open design and a standard installation footprint.
A founder who publishes the inside voice
Years before the larger funding announcements, Kervella left a trail of essays and videos under the name Ravelkel. He wrote about ambition, sincerity, first principles, entrepreneurship and freedom. The work is personal, sometimes metaphysical and far less sanded down than a company press release. His stated ambition is total freedom, internal and external. Entrepreneurship is the vehicle because it forces him to understand how value is created while giving his own qualities a place to operate.
He is also a voracious reader. In an alumni conversation, he named Kapil Gupta as a mentor and Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now as a bedside book. His personal site began as a support for ideas he wanted to turn into videos. One of them linked the success of Elon Musk to Luffy, the elastic pirate hero of One Piece. It is an odd pairing until you see the recurring question underneath: what makes a person continue toward a difficult goal after ordinary incentives stop working?
That question matters in medical hardware because the feedback loop is punishingly slow. Software founders can ship a revision tonight. A scanner has components to integrate, performance to verify and regulatory work that cannot be collapsed into a dramatic launch thread. Kervella's public personality runs hot, but the company calendar runs in controlled stages.

The long scoreboard
Chipiron incorporated in 2020. Kervella and Labat built a team around magnets, cryogenics, electronics, software, product and regulatory affairs. They call their 400-square-meter Paris headquarters and laboratory the Ark. The name sounds theatrical. The work inside it is stubbornly concrete.
The company describes a workplace engineered with the same concern for systems. Salaries follow a transparent grid. Hardware roles spend more time in the lab while software and operational work can be more flexible. New employees meet each lead during onboarding, and annual reviews sit alongside regular one-to-ones. The details are mundane by design. A complicated machine cannot depend on permanent improvisation, and a multidisciplinary team needs shared rules for deciding what happens next.
Recognition arrived before commercialization. Kervella entered Forbes' European 30 Under 30 list in 2022. The founders appeared in Le Point's 2024 inventors list. Chipiron collected public support from France 2030 and the European Innovation Council, and France Biotech named it Medtech of the Year. In June 2025, the company won VivaTech's Innovation of the Year competition.
The more consequential event came six weeks earlier: a $17 million Series A. Funding a hardware company buys talent and equipment, but it mostly buys the time to keep evidence ahead of promises. Chipiron said the round would support final research and development, an investigational device and clinical preparation. By December 2025, the company reported its first in-vivo images on its in-house system.
That roadmap matters because an older version of the story promised faster arrival. The present schedule extends through design verification in late 2026, an investigational installation in 2027 and a planned FDA submission in March 2028. The revision is a sign of the category's reality. Physics can be demonstrated before a product is ready. A founder's task is to preserve urgency without pretending those are the same event.
What builders can steal
Kervella's career contains a practical pattern. After Shorten, he did not merely increase effort. He changed the environment around himself. Chipiron applies the same move to hardware: instead of accepting the costly room as fixed, the team rearranged the technical system around the machine. The analogy is imperfect, but the strategy is consistent. When a constraint blocks the outcome, inspect the constraint itself.

There is also a lesson in the co-founder match. Kervella did not need a second version of himself. He needed access to a problem he could not credibly approach alone. Labat's physics and Kervella's software and company-building instincts made a new set of questions available. Their partnership has since had to stretch across fundraising, recruitment, laboratory management and the slow conversion of an experiment into a device.
Kervella now splits his public voice between the machine and the philosophy behind enduring it. On LinkedIn, he writes in variables, mechanisms and claims meant to be pressure-tested. On Ravelkel, the language is freedom, attention and sincerity. The two registers meet in his idea that motivation should survive contact with difficulty. A founder attached only to applause has a short runway. A founder attached to the structure of a problem can return to the data.
Chipiron still has its hardest proof ahead. Awards create attention. Funding creates room. Images create evidence. None of them removes integration, verification or regulation from the sequence. Kervella appears to understand the distinction, perhaps because his first company taught it early: a compelling idea and a functioning organization are separate achievements.
So the story is unfinished in the most useful way. A failed startup led to a deliberate change of scene. A first-day meeting created a technical partnership. A faint signal became the center of a company. Now every milestone has to make that signal clearer, until the object imagined in Paris can leave the Ark and fit into the ordinary world.
