Dwyer Instruments has been making the little pressure gauges bolted to industrial walls since 1931. In 2022 it swallowed OMEGA Engineering - a company twice its public profile - and became a measurement conglomerate hiding in plain sight.
Walk through almost any commercial building in America and you will pass one without noticing: a small round gauge with a needle, screwed to a wall or a length of duct, reading the pressure difference across a filter or a clean room door. It has no logo you would recognize. It has been there for years and will be there for years more. There is a good chance it was made by a company in Michigan City, Indiana, that most people have never heard of - and that is exactly the point.
That company is DwyerOmega. It is one of the largest makers of sensing, monitoring, and control instruments in the world, and it operates almost entirely out of view: behind panels, inside process lines, on rooftops, in laboratories. Its catalog runs past 300,000 individual products. Its brand recognition among the general public is close to zero. In the business of industrial measurement, that combination is not a weakness. It is the moat.
The Merger
DwyerOmega is the product of a 2022 marriage between two old, respected names. Dwyer Instruments was founded in 1931 in Michigan City and spent nine decades building differential pressure gauges and transmitters - the Magnehelic-style instruments that became a fixture of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems. OMEGA Engineering was founded in 1962 by Betty Ruth Hollander, who started by making ultra-fine-gauge thermocouples and grew the company into a temperature-and-process powerhouse known to a generation of engineers.
In April 2022, Dwyer - backed by the private-equity firm Arcline Investment Management - agreed to acquire OMEGA from the British group Spectris for roughly $525 million. The deal closed that July. The reported price worked out to about 20 times OMEGA's 2021 adjusted earnings, a rich multiple that says something about how the market values sticky, spec-locked industrial parts: nobody rips out a certified sensor to save four percent.

What It Makes
The combined product line reads like a syllabus for an entire branch of engineering. DwyerOmega makes instruments to measure temperature, pressure, flow, level, humidity, dew point, gas concentration, force, strain, pH, and conductivity. If a physical quantity can be turned into a number and fed to a control system, the company probably sells a device that does it.

In a field where a wrong reading can shut a plant down or spoil a batch of medicine, the ability to call someone who actually understands your process is part of what customers are buying. OMEGA built much of its reputation on exactly that - its color-coded engineering handbooks were, for years, a reference standard that taught engineers how to pick a sensor in the first place. When your marketing is the textbook, you do not need to go viral.
The expertise is genuinely deep and genuinely narrow. This is a company that knows, in fine detail, how a Type K thermocouple drifts over temperature, how a differential pressure reading behaves across a clogging filter, and how a moisture sensor should be calibrated for a specific gas. That know-how is hard to acquire and harder to replicate, and it is why buyers stay. The Burns Engineering purchase in 2026 was, in part, a bet on exactly this kind of institutional knowledge - certified, metrology-grade temperature measurement for the regulated worlds of biopharma and food processing, where a traceable calibration is not optional.
The Customers
The buyers are rarely consumers and almost always engineers. DwyerOmega's instruments end up in HVAC and building automation, chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and biopharma production, water and wastewater treatment, and calibration laboratories. The person placing the order is usually a design engineer specifying a part into a new system, a plant operator keeping an existing line within tolerance, or an original-equipment manufacturer building the sensors into a product of its own.
That customer base is the reason the business is durable. Industrial buyers do not chase novelty; they chase reliability, availability, and a data sheet they can trust. A gauge that has worked on ten thousand rooftops is worth more to them than a cleverer one nobody has field-tested. The catalog's sheer breadth - hundreds of thousands of parts, in stock, with documented specifications - is itself the product.
It also shapes how the company makes money. The business model is straightforward B2B manufacturing and distribution: DwyerOmega designs and builds the instruments, then sells them through its own e-commerce catalog and a network of distributors and reps. Revenue is transactional but highly repeat - the same part, ordered again and again, as systems are built, maintained, and replaced. There is no subscription and no lock-in contract; the lock-in is the spec sheet an engineer signed off on years ago. Layered on top is the acquisition engine, which turns retained earnings and private-equity capital into new brands and new categories of measurement.

The Strategy
The OMEGA deal was not the finish line. It was the platform. Under Arcline's ownership, DwyerOmega has run a steady buy-and-build strategy, folding complementary instrument makers into its single catalog. In November 2024 it acquired Process Sensing Technologies, a UK group carrying more than a dozen measurement brands across moisture, gas, level, and flow. In October 2025 it bought Macurco, a specialist in intelligent gas detection, deepening its air-quality and safety lineup. In January 2026 it added Burns Engineering, a Minnesota maker of certified, metrology-grade temperature devices used in biopharma, food processing, and calibration labs.

The logic is the private-equity playbook applied to a fragmented industry. Measurement and control is full of small, high-quality brands with loyal engineering customers and no reason to sell to each other. A well-capitalized platform can buy them one at a time, put them behind a shared catalog and distribution engine, and compound. Each addition widens the range of quantities the company can measure and the industries it can serve.
The Field
DwyerOmega competes in the broad world of industrial sensing and instrumentation, a market anchored by giants such as Emerson, Honeywell, Endress+Hauser, Siemens, and ABB, alongside specialist gauge and thermocouple makers like Ashcroft and WIKA. Against the largest players it is smaller and more focused; against the specialists it is far broader. Its position is the one-stop catalog: a single source that can supply the pressure gauge, the thermocouple, the flow meter, the gas monitor, and the data logger for the same project, with the technical support to match.
By the numbers, it is a substantial mid-sized manufacturer - roughly $539.5 million in reported revenue and on the order of 980 employees, spread across Michigan City and additional sites including Norwalk, Connecticut, and international operations. The brands under its umbrella now include Dwyer, Omega, ACI, Miljoco, Weiss Instruments, and UFM, plus the newer additions from PST, Macurco, and Burns.
The Takeaway
There is a version of the technology story that only counts the companies people talk about. DwyerOmega is a reminder that a lot of the real machinery of the physical economy runs on products nobody talks about at all. A ninety-year-old gauge business bought a bigger, better-known instrument company, put a private-equity engine behind it, and set about assembling a measurement platform one acquisition at a time. The parts are unglamorous. The customers are loyal. The catalog keeps growing.
