The best time to understand an air-conditioning company is when an air conditioner stops. On a bright July afternoon, the homeowner is not comparing abstract efficiency curves. The restaurant manager is not admiring industrial design. The school, supermarket or distribution center wants cool air restored, a compatible part found and a technician on site. Fast. Lennox has spent 130 years arranging itself around that urgent, ordinary problem.
The red Lennox script is familiar on the metal cabinet beside a suburban house, but the corporation behind it is broader and less visible. Lennox International designs and manufactures heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment. It supplies homes, offices, restaurants, schools, shops, warehouses, supermarkets and industrial facilities. It also sells the controls, replacement parts, maintenance and digital support that keep those machines useful after installation day.
In 2025, the Richardson, Texas-based company recorded $5.195 billion in net sales. Roughly $3.34 billion came from Home Comfort Solutions; another $1.85 billion came from Building Climate Solutions. The first business sells furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, indoor-air-quality equipment and thermostats. The second handles commercial rooftop units, refrigeration, controls, national-account service and the mechanical odds and ends that make a building breathe.
To a homeowner, the catalog begins with a choice among air conditioner, furnace or heat pump, then expands into air handlers, zoning, filtration, humidity control and a thermostat. The premium Dave Lennox Signature Collection emphasizes variable-speed operation and tighter control; Elite and Merit lines give dealers other efficiency and price points. For a light-commercial customer, the vocabulary changes to tonnage, curb fit, economizers and rooftop controls. For a supermarket, it becomes condensing units, unit coolers and racks that keep thousands of dollars of perishables from becoming tomorrow's waste.
The products solve several problems at once. They regulate temperature and humidity, move and clean indoor air, preserve food, cool sensitive industrial processes and help building owners manage energy use. A smart thermostat may be the only object the customer touches, but its calm screen orchestrates compressors, blowers, dampers and sensors distributed throughout a building. Comfort feels simple precisely because the machinery is not.
The box is only the beginning
Lennox's business starts with hardware, but hardware alone does not explain its durability. Residential Lennox-branded systems travel through a direct-to-dealer network: the company sells to selected independent home-service businesses that specify and install the equipment. Other brands - including Armstrong Air, AirEase, Ducane and Concord - move through independent wholesale distributors. Company-owned Lennox Stores put equipment, OEM parts, universal supplies and tools within reach of contractors.
That route to market is a practical advantage. A dealer is simultaneously salesperson, installer, service desk and source of feedback from the attic. Every installed system enlarges the base of equipment that will need filters, parts, diagnostics, maintenance, monitoring, retrofits and, eventually, replacement. The relationship can outlive any single furnace.

Commercial HVAC sharpens the importance of speed. A failed rooftop unit can spoil food, empty a dining room or turn a shop into an oven. Lennox has invested in regional distribution and says it can deliver more than 90 percent of commercial rooftop units and accessories within one day. Its Commercial Quick Quote tool lets contractors see local inventory, compare products and match curb adapters while building a replacement quote. In this market, availability is not back-office hygiene. It is part of the product.
Two climates, one company
The residential and commercial sides respond to different rhythms. Home comfort depends on replacement cycles, new construction, financing, consumer confidence and weather. Commercial climate includes planned upgrades, national accounts and emergency replacements. Refrigeration adds supermarkets, restaurants, warehouses, data centers and industrial processes, where temperature is not merely comfort but inventory protection or operational continuity.
That mix was visible in the second quarter of 2026. Home Comfort Solutions revenue fell 7 percent year over year as residential conditions remained soft and new construction weighed on demand. Building Climate Solutions grew 24 percent, helped by national accounts, emergency replacement work, services and acquisitions. A company that sells indoor weather is still exposed to outdoor weather, but it is not exposed in only one way.
The company competes with Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Daikin, Goodman, Bosch-linked brands and a long list of refrigeration specialists. Efficiency matters, but so do reliability, serviceability, price and whether the right unit is actually in the warehouse. Lennox's distinction is the combination: a wide portfolio, a direct channel for its flagship residential brand, company stores, contractor tools, connected controls and commercial service capability.
Lennox sits between giant diversified climate companies and local contractors. It manufactures the equipment, owns key brands and distribution assets, then relies on dealers and service teams to turn machinery into functioning comfort.
A wider basket for the same technician
Recent expansion has followed the customer's cart. In October 2025, Lennox completed an approximately $550 million purchase of NSI Industries' HVAC division, adding Duro Dyne and Supco. These are not household names. They make air-distribution accessories, switches, controls and technician-focused components - precisely the small, critical things that accompany installation and repair. The logic is less “invent a new customer” than “stock more of what the existing customer already needs.”
Two joint ventures broaden the equipment shelf. A partnership with Samsung distributes ductless air conditioners, heat pumps and variable-refrigerant-flow products in the United States and Canada. Another with Ariston Group moved Lennox into residential water heating in 2026. Gas, electric and heat-pump water heaters can flow through Lennox stores and the dealer network; compatible models can be managed in the Lennox Home Comfort app.
Water heating looks adjacent until one considers the contractor, the utility room and electrification. Heat-pump water heaters and heat-pump HVAC share technology, efficiency concerns and sometimes the same professional channel. By joining Ariston's category expertise with Lennox's distribution, the company enters without pretending that 130 years in furnaces automatically confers mastery of tanks.
The energy transition arrives through the attic
Lennox began in Marshalltown, Iowa, in 1895, when railroad machine-shop owner Dave Lennox designed a riveted-steel coal-fired furnace. The corporate timeline reads like a compressed history of indoor energy: forced-air heating, central air conditioning, two-speed compressors, high-efficiency gas furnaces, smart thermostats and cold-climate heat pumps.
Now the engineering challenge is to improve comfort while using less energy and lower-impact refrigerants. Lennox reported that 55 percent of core-product revenue in 2025 came from products exceeding U.S. minimum efficiency standards. It spent $103.4 million on research and development that year, and says about 30 percent of patent applications were tied to energy-efficiency improvements. Its work ranges from airflow and compressor behavior to sensors, controls and computational fluid-dynamics simulations.
The environmental equation is not tidy. Factories consume energy and metals. Refrigerants must be managed across long equipment lives. In 2025, Lennox reported that participating dealer locations reclaimed 186,796 pounds of refrigerant through its Hudson Reclaim program. More efficient equipment can reduce customer energy use, but the gain depends on system selection, installation quality, climate, grid mix and years of operation. The honest unit of progress is the whole lifecycle.

Where Lennox goes next
The next version of Lennox is likely to look more like a platform while remaining unmistakably industrial. The machine still matters: quiet operation, efficiency, reliability and ease of repair are not virtual features. Around it, however, the company is assembling a wider layer of parts, connected controls, rapid quoting, technical support, preventive maintenance and national-account service.
Doing that work requires a sizable manufacturing culture. At the end of 2025, about 7,500 Lennox employees were hourly and 5,400 were salaried; roughly 3,400 workers were represented by unions. The company describes its internal code with three old-fashioned words - integrity, respect and excellence - then translates them into safety, accountability, customer experience, innovation and quality. Its factories use lean methods and Six Sigma, while engineering teams work with simulation, prototype equipment and certified laboratories. This is a business where an elegant algorithm still has to become a reliable assembly on a line.
Training extends outside the payroll. Contractors must understand new refrigerants, communicating controls and installation details that determine whether an efficient system performs efficiently in the field. Dealers are therefore more than a sales channel. They are the last manufacturing step, performed at the customer's property, under weather and time pressure. Lennox's support tools and stores are designed around that uncomfortable truth.
That strategy faces stubborn constraints. Residential construction can soften. Tariffs and copper, steel or aluminum prices can move quickly. A cool summer can suppress demand; a hot one can test inventory. Regulations force product transitions. Dealers can prefer another brand. The field is crowded with companies that possess their own factories, channels and technical histories.
Lennox's answer is operational rather than theatrical: put more products through the same trusted relationships, place inventory closer to the job, make selection easier and stay present through the equipment's useful life. The company has traveled from a coal furnace to an app-connected heat-pump water heater, yet the essential promise remains wonderfully plain. A room should feel right. The food should stay cold. And when the machine stops, someone should know what to do next.
