A tool built by the people holding the needle

Every spine surgeon knows the moment. During a procedure the dura mater - the thin, paper-like membrane that seals cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spine - gets nicked. It is called an incidental durotomy, and if it isn't closed cleanly the fluid can leak for weeks, driving pain, readmissions, and cost. Repairing it means passing a curved needle through a membrane millimeters thick, often through an opening barely wide enough for a hand.

DuraStat exists to make that repair fast and reproducible. The company's namesake device consolidates the fiddly, multi-step suturing sequence into a single button press: the surgeon positions the instrument, activates it, and the needle passes on a pre-selected path - no wrist rotation required. The result is a precise, atraumatic, sutured closure designed to prevent persistent CSF leaks, even when access is limited.

It was not dreamed up in a lab. DuraStat was invented by practicing spine surgeons Greg Anderson, MD and Mark Kurd, MD, and engineered for scale with input from Kevin Foley, MD and Alex Lukianov. That surgeon-first origin runs through everything the 14-person Austin company builds.
