The box was the joke before it became the opening. Darrell Jobe was visiting a friend whose father had a large house, expensive cars and a life that looked impossibly distant from his own. When Jobe asked what the father did, his friend answered: he sold cardboard boxes. Jobe laughed. The proposition sounded absurd. How could something so ordinary produce a life like that?
Then he kept asking for an interview.
For roughly six months, Jobe pursued a chance to enter the packaging business. The friend's father eventually helped him interview with another company. Jobe got the job and says he doubled his sales territory in his first year. A plain brown box had become a doorway, but only after he knocked long enough for someone to answer.
That persistence matters because Jobe had very little on paper that made an employer's choice easy. Raised in Richmond, California, he left school after eighth grade, became involved with a gang and spent stretches of his youth in juvenile detention. He has said he was homeless at 13. By 23, facing the prospect of years in prison and thinking about his young daughter and a son on the way, he made a private bargain: leave the old life behind, become the father he had wanted, and do something useful with whatever chance came next.

A trade learned from the floor up
Packaging rewarded the kind of attention Jobe had taught himself to apply. A shipping box may look simple from the outside. Inside it sits a compact systems problem: material, shape, temperature, weight, handling, price and disposal all have to work at once. Jobe moved from his first sales role to a family-owned packaging company in Gilroy, where he spent 14 years. About a decade into that run, he was able to buy a share of the business.
He also became an engineer without taking the conventional route to the title. A retired mentor named Gary Lantz taught him thermodynamics. Jobe learned by selling, observing, testing and building. He has described his method as intensely visual: he assembles designs in his head, where the pieces can move before a physical prototype exists.
“I build everything in my head. If I wrote it down, that would mess me up.” The line is funny, but it also describes a working style: hold the whole object in view, change one constraint, and watch what the rest of the system does.
By the time cities began moving against expanded polystyrene, commonly used as foam insulation in cold shipping, Jobe had spent years close enough to the industry to see both the policy pressure and the product gap. Customers still needed temperature control. Warehouses still needed familiar pack-outs. Costs still mattered. Any replacement had to perform inside the machinery of an existing supply chain, not simply look virtuous in a pitch deck.
The pile of things that almost worked
Jobe tried starch, coconut husks, bamboo and hay while searching for an insulation material that could compete with foam. Each option was a useful failure. The product needed to be manufacturable, resilient in transit, thermally reliable and close enough to the incumbent on cost that a buyer could actually switch.
The materials search

The answer was post-consumer plant fiber. In 2015, Jobe founded Vericool to turn that material into insulated shippers and retail coolers. The promise was practical: a box for temperature-sensitive goods that could replace petroleum-based foam without asking a shipper to surrender performance. In a 2019 interview, Jobe said a 12-inch cube of the material cost less than $5, roughly comparable to a foam version at the time.
Patents followed. In 2019, Jobe celebrated Vericool's sixth patent. By 2022, a profile counted 17 United States patents and five international patents. The current Vericool product pages name seven U.S. patent numbers across recyclable thermal shippers, a retail cooler and protective wrap, with more applications pending. Patent totals change as applications mature and assets move, but the consistent thread is Jobe's name on physical packaging systems built to travel through the real world.
A hiring thesis built from rejection
The material was only half of Jobe's replacement story. After leaving jail, he knew what it felt like to want a lawful working life and meet employers who saw a record before they saw ability. Vericool deliberately hired formerly incarcerated people. In early 2019, Jobe estimated that about a quarter of the company's 45 employees had served time. By that November, company leaders said Vericool had hired 75 men and women seeking a second chance over its history.
The program went beyond an open door. Employees could participate in a stock-option plan. Jobe also said Vericool declined government subsidies for those hires because he did not want workers to wonder whether a credit, rather than their contribution, was the reason they were there. His underlying argument was direct: employment interrupts the rejection cycle by giving a person income, responsibility and proof that another identity is possible.

The idea was not abstract charity. Former Vericool production operator Kyil Parker said years passed without work because background checks ended the conversation. “Darrell gave us a second chance,” he said. Jobe, meanwhile, mentored young people in juvenile detention. He understood their position because he had occupied it. Opportunity had been the hinge in his own life; he wanted the company to manufacture more of it.
There was a revealing symmetry on the factory floor. Post-consumer fiber is useful precisely because it has already been used. Its past does not disqualify it from carrying something valuable next. Jobe never needed to stretch that into a slogan. The payroll and the product made the point every day.
Growth, recognition and a harder chapter
Demand arrived quickly. In 2019, Vericool expected $10 million in annual revenue, up from $2 million the year before, and reported more than $40 million in committed orders. The company earned local and industry recognition, including a Tri-Valley Hero Innovation award, a StopWaste Business Efficiency Award and a California Senate district Small Business of the Year honor. Alameda County formally recognized Jobe for his business and community work.
Investors followed. Vericool announced a $19.1 million Series A in March 2020 from a group that included Radicle Impact Partners, Ecosystem Integrity Fund, ID8 Investments and AiiM Partners. In August 2021, Apple selected it for the first class of its Impact Accelerator for Black- and Brown-owned environmental businesses.
Then the corporate story bent. Vericool Inc.'s board voted to liquidate the company in late 2021, and Jobe's tenure as its CEO ended. He formed Vericool World LLC, which bought certain assets from the original business and continued work around the products and patents. The distinction is easy to lose in old profiles, but it matters. Companies are legal structures as well as missions, and the structure did not survive unchanged.

The current Vericool site belongs to that second chapter. It offers Recycoolers, paper insulation liners, retail coolers and protective wrap. It presents the same durable thesis Jobe saw years earlier: regulation, customer preference and disposal costs keep pressing cold-chain packaging away from foam. Newer patent numbers on the product pages suggest the engineering work kept moving even when the corporate form changed.
What the ordinary box contains
Jobe's career is tempting to compress into a dramatic before-and-after. That would miss the mechanism. His life did not turn on one revelation alone. It turned on repeated acts that were almost boring: call again, take the interview, learn the territory, study the heat, test another material, file another application, hire the person whose resume gets filtered out.
He is candid about the starting point and equally specific about the work. He remembers the judge who showed mercy. He remembers the friend's father who helped him reach an industry. He remembers Gary Lantz teaching him thermodynamics. Connections matter in this story, but they become consequential only because Jobe treated each one as an obligation to build something and extend the opening.
His stated aspiration remains broad: replace foam packaging and advocate for second chances. The interesting part is how literal he made both goals. One became a bill of materials. The other became a hiring practice. Both asked the same question of a system accustomed to disposal: what if the thing you are about to dismiss still has work left in it?
A cardboard box once looked too ordinary to contain a future. Jobe kept looking until he could see the engineering, economics and human opportunity folded inside.
