The next Craig Rouskey company began with a delivery in Joliet. Equipment was arriving at a GMP facility near the crossing of I-80 and I-55, two thick lines on the American logistics map. The detail is wonderfully unromantic. After years in Bay Area laboratories, community workspaces and venture-backed startups, he was thinking about loading docks, central shipping and where a real operation could live. He was also back in the Illinois city where he grew up.
Homecomings are often written as soft-focus returns. This one came with scar tissue and a floor plan. Rouskey had already passed through several versions of scientific work: academic training, corporate research, open-source experiments, founder life and the controlled chaos of an emergency laboratory business. Now he was putting Flore Inc. together in a familiar place, but with an unfamiliar amount of experience.
His career makes more sense as a series of translations than as a ladder. He has translated molecular systems into experiments, experiments into public projects, projects into companies and company promises into operating constraints. Each translation asks the same uncomfortable question: can the idea survive contact with ordinary life?
The teacher before the operator
Rouskey says he was curious about science as a child, but curiosity became a direction only after he met Sister Maryanne Jerkofsky, an undergraduate mentor at the University of St. Francis. He studied biology there, then completed graduate work across molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry and immunology at Southern Illinois University. From 2007 to 2009, he continued advanced research training at the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam.
Industry gave him sharper tools. He worked in scientific roles at companies including Novartis and Thermo Fisher, learning what well-resourced laboratories could do. Yet the institutions never became the whole story. Rouskey was pulled toward the border where professional biology met public participation.
In Oakland, that border had folding tables, shared equipment and people willing to learn by doing. At Counter Culture Labs, he taught DIY molecular cloning. He and Marc Juul built a low-cost incubator. The point was not to imitate an institutional lab badly. It was to let more people acquire fluency in a field usually protected by credentials, expense and architecture.

The most playful example arrived in 2014. Rouskey joined a volunteer group from Counter Culture Labs and BioCurious working on Real Vegan Cheese, an attempt to use engineered yeast to produce the proteins required for cheese without relying on an animal. They put their work in public, raised money from a crowd and treated the experiment as both molecular engineering and cultural provocation. Asked what success might taste like, Rouskey guessed Gouda.
There is a useful seriousness in that joke. The team knew a clever demonstration was only the first gate. “First prove this, then figure out how to scale up” was Rouskey’s practical sequence. The phrase could sit above nearly every later chapter of his career.
The founder learns scale
By 2017, the community projects were becoming companies. Doug Manofsky called Rouskey that November to ask about his earlier startup, BioNascent. The conversation wandered through large problems and possible applications until the two found a business they wanted to build. Pando Nutrition paired Manofsky’s engineering and commercial instincts with Rouskey’s molecular background. IndieBio supplied a compressed education in the parts of entrepreneurship that do not appear on a laboratory protocol: capital, narrative, teams and the discipline of testing a business assumption as aggressively as a scientific one.
Rouskey had already gone through the accelerator once. Pando made him a two-time alumnus. His enduring lesson was not a growth hack. It was the habit of questioning everything. In a lab, a cherished assumption can sink an experiment. In a company, it can consume a payroll.

The largest test of that education began in 2020. Rouskey co-founded Renegade.bio as a rapid laboratory response to a public emergency. The company went from nothing to infrastructure: eventually 110 people and more than 300,000 tests. Its public-benefit structure and LGBTQ-led identity were part of the design, not decorations added later. The company built services with communities in mind that larger systems too often missed.
Speed can disguise fragility. Emergency demand created a wave, and the team learned to ride it. Then the conditions changed. Rouskey began winding the company down in 2024, four years after its founding. For a leader trained to turn uncertain situations into action, the ending refused to become another solvable protocol.
The chapter founder stories edit out
Two years later, Rouskey wrote about the closure without the lacquer founders often apply after the fact. He was tired of resilience as a flattering label. He described anger. He described managing through every high and low and discovering that effort still did not guarantee continuation. He described the cost in years, relationships and trust.

That sentence is less inspirational than it first appears. It removes the applause. Showing up means examining the invoice, cutting a program, adjusting a price, telling a team what has changed and returning the next morning. It also explains why his next company was not a clean escape from the previous one.
A month after losing Renegade, Rouskey met Sun Genomics. He saw a familiar pattern: a functioning product inside an operating model that could not hold. He joined Floré as chief executive in 2024. The work that followed was blunt. Right-size. Cut programs. Change pricing. Stop losing money on every customer. In May 2025, with sustaining funds unavailable, the company publicly scaled down.
A scale-down looks like an ending from outside. Inside, it can also be a sorting mechanism. What is worth saving? Which capability has accumulated quietly? What can be rebuilt without repeating the original architecture? Rouskey acquired and rebuilt Sun Genomics into Flore Inc., turning the brand toward a formulation platform supported by years of sequencing and operating data. The transition drew on the same habit he had named at IndieBio: challenge the assumption, including the one holding the company together.
A compelling demonstration earns attention. A repeatable process earns a company.

Joliet is a strategy
By February 2026, Flore was operating from Joliet. The move carried obvious practical logic. The city sits at a freight crossroads. Manufacturing space and centralized shipping make sense there. A GMP facility could hold the physical version of what Rouskey had learned across twenty years: biology becomes a business only when the invisible work is supported by repeatable physical systems.
But Joliet also closes a personal loop. Rouskey has described growing up queer there in the late 1980s and early 1990s, learning resilience long before a founder vocabulary gave it a polished name. Returning is not a sentimental erasure of that experience. It is an act of authorship. The person who once needed endurance simply to exist there is now choosing what to plant there.
His old mentor belongs in this scene, too. Sister Maryanne Jerkofsky helped turn a child’s curiosity into a scientific path. Decades later, Rouskey’s own teaching suggests that mentorship became a method. Give someone access to the tools. Help the unfamiliar become workable. Let the next question appear.
Rouskey’s Bluesky bio compresses him into four words: entrepreneur, scientist, activist, musician. Most careers would force a choice among them. His has been an attempt to keep the quartet in tune, sometimes unsuccessfully and rarely quietly. Science supplies the method. Activism asks who benefits. Entrepreneurship builds the container. Music, perhaps, is the reminder that systems still need rhythm.
The useful thing to steal from his story is not resilience. He would probably reject the tidy extraction. It is the willingness to let evidence revise identity. A scientist can become an operator. An activist can learn unit economics. A Bay Area founder can discover that the right next address is back home by two Illinois interstates.
The equipment arrived. The facility began to take shape. There was no guarantee hidden inside the shipment, just another chance to make the idea repeatable. For Craig Rouskey, that has always been where the interesting work starts.
