The Story

A hat brand that started with a hot iron

In 2015, four friends in Arizona - Dave Dickert, Josh Tabaj, Tim Welch and Samuel Coil - made a single hat. They branded a leather patch with a hot iron, cut it by hand with a knife, sewed it onto a cap, and delivered it to a brewery in South Dakota. That one patch, meant to show where someone was born and raised, became the whole idea: a hat as a badge of place.

One state-specific patch grew into coverage of all 50. It did not come easy. Before the company automated anything, the founders felt every scorching brand, every precise cut, every new order. Branded Bills says it was the first to create leather patch hats for all 50 states - a milestone earned the manual way.

By 2017, all four founders had gone full-time and the company leaned into customization, letting customers make products truly their own. In 2018 it brought headwear production in-house, trading convenience for control over quality and speed. In 2020 it added an apparel line and supported frontline responders during the pandemic.

The climb was not a straight line. A growth plateau in 2021 pushed the team to refine rather than simply push harder - sharpening product, brand and operations before the next stretch. Along the way the company reports it has sold more than $50 million of product and grown to roughly 200 people, all from a start of about $4,000.

"Where Premium Meets Purpose." - Branded Bills company motto
What It Does

Custom hats for a head and a logo

THE PRODUCT

Premium headwear

Snapbacks, truckers, 5-panel rope, fitted, performance and beanies - built with materials chosen to hold up to real use, from golf courses to job sites.

THE MARK

Leather patches & logos

The signature leather-patch application plus embroidery and screen printing, so a hat can carry a state, a team, an event or a company logo.

BEYOND HATS

Apparel line

Polos, tees, vests, long-sleeve knits, hoodies and flannels extend the brand past headwear into a full wardrobe.

FOR CONSUMERS

Direct to you

College students, golfers, and outdoor and lifestyle buyers shop stock and design-your-own hats through the online store and its Footprint Center shop.

FOR BUSINESS

Custom & blanks

A B2B program serves teams, events, golf courses, licensees and corporate branding with bulk custom orders and wholesale blanks.

THE PROBLEM

Generic gets ignored

Most branded hats are forgettable. Branded Bills makes headwear people actually want to wear - and want to put their own mark on.

Why It's Different

Not a bigger factory - a better reason to care

In a category where blank hats are a commodity, Branded Bills competes on a distinct product and a dual audience. The leather patch turned a cap into something personal; producing in-house lets the company control quality and turnaround; and serving both consumers and businesses means the same product line sells as a personal purchase, a team order, or a corporate uniform.

It sits alongside premium and custom hat makers like Melin, Richardson and Imperial, and competes with broad custom-apparel and promotional suppliers. Its edge is brand: a homegrown Arizona story, a large social following, and collaborations - from the Phoenix Suns to golf creator Hailey Ostrom - that keep the hats worth photographing.
