Somewhere between a refrigerated shipment and a hospital bed, a tiny modem wakes up. It checks the network, sends a few kilobytes and goes quiet again. Nobody taps a screen. Nobody watches a loading bar. Yet a temperature reading may decide whether a box of medicine is safe, while a status signal may determine whether a machine receives service. Aeris lives in that largely invisible exchange. The San Jose company supplies the software, cellular plumbing and control systems that keep connected devices working after the launch-day demo is over.
That is a much larger job than selling data plans. A global IoT program has to activate and deactivate SIMs, choose carriers, obey local roaming rules, reconcile bills, spot dead devices, cap runaway usage and keep data moving for years. Aeris packages those chores into a platform used by mobile operators, manufacturers and enterprises. In June 2026, it said its technology managed 104 million devices, including more than 41 million connected vehicles.
The control room behind the device
Aeris is best understood as a control plane between physical machines and the patchwork of cellular networks that serve them. Its customers include automakers, device manufacturers, IoT solution providers, mobile network operators and large businesses in energy, logistics, healthcare, retail and manufacturing. The machine may be a car, smart meter, solar pump, point-of-sale terminal, gateway or cargo sensor. Aeris gives the operator one place to provision it, monitor it, understand its data consumption and intervene when something looks wrong.
The company sells three principal platforms. IoT Accelerator handles connectivity management - SIM and eSIM orchestration, global coverage, device lifecycle controls, rating and billing. Mobility Suite is tailored to automotive programs, with modules for device management, services, applications and analytics. IoT Watchtower adds security by watching cellular traffic and applying controls at the network layer.

A mobile operator, meanwhile, may prefer to offer a mature IoT platform under its own commercial relationship rather than build every layer. Aeris says it works with nearly 30 operator partners and reaches more than 190 countries. Those partners are not merely suppliers; they are also distribution.
One tiny message, three large systems
The Ericsson hinge
Aeris was founded in 1996 by a team that included engineer Syed Zaeem Hosain, now its chief evangelist. Early work focused on machine-to-machine communications, before “IoT” became the industry’s preferred shorthand. The company built a cellular core and devised billing methods for deployments in which millions of low-traffic machines behave nothing like human phone subscribers.
The decisive change came in March 2023. Ericsson transferred its IoT Accelerator and Connected Vehicle Cloud businesses, assets and employees to Aeris, receiving a small stake in the combined company. The transaction brought a large installed base, global operator relationships and an automotive platform. Aeris went from long-running specialist to one of the largest independent orchestrators of cellular IoT connections.

Scale is useful in connectivity because fixed infrastructure can serve more endpoints. It is also useful in security because a network with many sessions can develop a broad view of normal and abnormal behavior. Aeris operates core-network infrastructure across operator partners and maintains real-time session information such as destinations, ports and protocols. That position turns routine network telemetry into the raw material for threat detection.
Security for the thing that cannot install security
Conventional cybersecurity assumes a capable endpoint: install an agent, update it often, send logs to a central console. An IoT fleet breaks those assumptions. A meter may run on a battery for a decade. A gateway may sit on a rooftop. A vehicle module cannot accept the overhead and update cadence of a laptop security stack. Some devices are sealed, regulated or simply too numerous to touch.
Watchtower approaches the problem upstream. It examines traffic already passing through the cellular network, identifies anomalous or known-malicious behavior and lets administrators write rules that block or quarantine traffic. Aeris divides the product into awareness and enforcement. The first answers what a device is doing and where it is talking. The second lets a customer act on that knowledge. Because the work happens in the network, Aeris says customers need no special SIM, device-side agent or proxy detour.
Early deployments show the model. Swisscom Broadcast Service used Watchtower to gain visibility across more than 8,000 customer gateways. ABB Motion received security capabilities through Swisscom, while Murata adopted the product for its ZENCROSS cellular IoT ecosystem. In 2026, Aeris integrated Watchtower with Palo Alto Networks' Prisma SASE 5G, adding application-layer controls such as deep packet inspection and data-loss prevention to Aeris's network-layer view.
The difference from many rivals is the bundle: connectivity management, operator relationships, eSIM orchestration, automotive software and inline security. KORE Wireless, Wireless Logic, 1NCE, Eseye, Soracom, EMnify and floLIVE compete as specialist providers; global carriers also sell their own IoT services. Aeris's wager is that customers will value one platform that sees both the commercial life of a connection and the live behavior traveling through it.
How the business earns its keep
Aeris is private and does not publish a detailed revenue mix or standard price card. Its model is enterprise software plus managed connectivity: recurring platform fees, connection or usage charges, security capabilities, implementation and support sold directly and through partners. Automotive programs add longer, more specialized work around vehicle services and cloud integration. The result resembles vertical SaaS bolted to telecommunications infrastructure - sticky when it works, painful to replace and judged on uptime rather than novelty.
Customers buy fewer operational surprises. IoT Accelerator can flag excessive data use, automate activation, manage eSIM profiles and provide a common view across markets. Mobility Suite promises automakers a quicker route to connected services; Aeris says a new program can launch in under six months and an application in 90 days. Watchtower can reduce the labor of hunting problems across a fleet while giving security teams controls they lacked.
That does not erase hard trade-offs. Global cellular rules are changing, permanent roaming remains politically sensitive, and every operator relationship adds technical and commercial complexity. Security monitoring also creates a high bar for accuracy: a false alarm is annoying on a dashboard, but a mistaken block can interrupt a vehicle, meter or medical workflow. Aeris must show that integrated control produces better outcomes, not merely another pane of glass.
The market position: between carrier and cloud
Aeris occupies a useful middle. It does not manufacture the pump, car or meter. It does not own every radio tower. It connects the device maker's hardware, the carrier's network and the enterprise's cloud application, then provides a consistent operational layer across them. That makes its expertise unusually cross-disciplinary: telecommunications, subscription billing, embedded-device behavior, cloud software, automotive systems and security policy.
The company's customer list makes the abstraction concrete. Public references include Volkswagen and Mitsubishi Motors in automotive; Bboxx and Lorentz in distributed energy; VisionTrack in video telematics; DeltaTrak in cold-chain monitoring; and Swisscom, Telenor and Telstra among operators. Each begins with a different machine. Each eventually encounters the same questions: Is it connected? What is it doing? What will it cost? Is it safe?
TA Associates took an undisclosed minority stake in November 2025, with Aeris pointing to further work in security and agentic AI. The AI claim will deserve practical scrutiny. IoT operations contain plenty of repetitive diagnosis and policy work that software agents might handle, but the cost of a confident mistake can be physical. The credible opportunity is modest and useful: turn a mountain of session records into a shorter list of actions for a human operator.
After 30 years, Aeris has reached an interesting inversion. Connectivity used to be the product and security an added feature. As basic cellular access becomes easier to source, trusted visibility and control may become the product, with connectivity as the route in. The machines will continue to whisper. Aeris's business depends on hearing enough to know when one of them has changed its story.
